can't get avi or mpg to play

I have downloaded several movies that when launched go to quicktime 6.0 but won't play. The audio type player opens instead of the video one. I tried to use the Divx valadator but the following error happened:
29/2002 7:29 AM] - "jimmy newtron .avi" was unable to be validated; it contains either no AVI header or a corrupt AVI header.

does anyone know what I need to/can do to fix this?
