The first main option to set the speed is based on download speeds, but it's true that the fast installation wizard only asks for your download speed, ignoring the frequent case of asymetric connections. You have to open yourself the Options panel. Note however that LimeWire will learn by itself your effective upload speed, by monitoring the uploads your servent has performed. This information is saved in your local "limewire.props" file. So even if the upload speed is set apparently too high because of the download speed setting, LimeWire will adjust itself the reported upload speed based on your upload experience and your past connections and uptime. |
LimeWire as Download-Helper Hi, I'd love to be able to set LimeWire as standard download helper. For this it would just need to also support ftp, and then it would become normal for LimeWire Users to let it do their standard downloads (which would then automatically be reshared). I'm sure there are GPLled ftp-helpers. It would make general adoption of Magnet-Links as download-source far easier, because the most simple magnet-link to get a web resource is simply: magnet:?as=<url>&dn=<download-name>. Could LimeWire maybe also process magnets like this one without dwonlload-name, by simply taking the file-name as specified inthe URL? |
Toggle nested/flat displays of search results and Library Folders old request-- Toggling the nested Shared folders to a flat display would be good (it's difficult to see the most popular uploads from an iTunes Music or iPhoto folder since the files are often nested quite deeply). Since path info is included in search results, toggling the flat display to nested would be very useful for downloading from a browsed host. |
I would like to see for Windows XP, the songs to automatically copy into Windows Media Player or itunes. I know on the mac version it automatically copies the song into itunes. They should do that so it automatically copies songs into wmp. |
Share stripped mp3s There was a proposal to share mp3's stripped of their metadata some time ago (only the data-part of the file), so files with different metadata can be merged together. Are there still plans for this? That way, metadata would be transfered via xml or similar, so the receiving host adds them itself (but search results would still show the files with metadata, only the invisible part: The swarming would be done with stripped files, and every query result would have to have two hashes: one with metadata for older nodes and one for the stripped file-part for those, which support this kind of sharing). |
browser i want a browser so itll be more convient to use the net and download.... a browser and limewire takes up a lot of memory together...so why not put em together |
WOW! A net browser incorporated in LW? And what makes you think that this wouldn't consume just as much cpu? (Don't know. Could be...) Anyways, that would be a whole lot of work, to make a good browser. And if the Lw devs (somehow) decide to go for it, .... Me thinks that either the price of Lw will increase significantly (for the Pro, if they decide to keep the Basic), or they'd have to recruit an entire dev department dedicated to the browser, because LW is written in Java and browsers (from what I understand) aren't. Plus, in order to keep the cross-platform nature of LW, they'd have to make different versions of the browser too... And I've seen how different a browser can be from PC to Mac (IE). |
Actually, LimeWire integrates a web browser component in the Basic Windows version, to display the content of the LimeShop page (loaded locally). It is an IE component, with no navigational feature. This pane will most probably disappear in the next release. Java has its own browser classes, with limited capabilities (no CSS2 support, no JavaScript, and a still too poort HTML 3 parser, but it is enough to build a GUI interface, as seen in the "About..." scrolling window). But it would be effectively interesting to find a cross-browser support class for Java that allows a clean integration of modern browsers for desktops: IE, Netscape (4, or Gecko-based 7+), the MacOSX default browser, or the excellent (Gecko-based) Mozilla Firefox browser for Windows/Linux/Mac. |
I think that in filter options that the htm/html should also block url links |
Selfish and egocentric as I am, I just want a purple and black version of the pink and black skin, without having to make it myself... Did I mention I'm lazy too. |
Thank god for lazy people like you:) I also would like that skin |
my wishes On each start of LW, the default column sort is by #. Is there a way to change this? I just wanted to know before posting in the new features section here. Remember last search TYPE (i.e. audio, video, images, etc.). Since I would guess that many users use Limewire only for a particular type of file (such as audio) that would save most of us a click Add drop down arrows to the taps (or what they are now). I don’t like to use the ctrl key Re-search button for corrupted downloads. click failed download and have it start a search for it I would like a pull down, either a separate box or from the title box that would have a list of previous search terms. This way I don’t have to retype things like cute kittens and love poems. remember for each session. |
Get unknown files for keyword An option to search for a certain keyword, and to download every file, which I don't already have (which isn't greyed out). This would allow getting new trailers, filk-songs, and whatever you can think of automatically. A menu item "Get unknown files for keyword" (maybe also "get unknown music from iTunes Artist" etc.) would be useful, I think. But as limitation, it should then request a keyword and a cathegory, so we can avoid people downloading a hell of a lot of fake-files, and "get unkown songs from current artist" should only download music-files. |
Size Criteria Search option I have to be persistent for a request I put in some time back. But it echoes in my brain. xtra search option size criteria settings which I suspect has a number of benefits other than the obvious. A size critereon. What's wrong with it? Benefits Versus Negative effects on the Gnutella network? I guess it depends how you go about designing it. |
This was already pointed out by someone else, but I'm still seeing my own files when I search. Ivan In the dark we make a brighter light |
Blah, Blah, Blah...... All this talk about computer jargon is makin my head hurt. I learned a term when I was in the Marines....it's called K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). There was only one guy on here that I thought exhibited that philosophy. Congratulations to him. What I would really like, and I hope this doesn't get edited, is for all movie clips, music video clips, and porn clips to have THE EXACT TITLE SOMEWHERE ON THE FILE!!!!! I'm sick and tired of watching something and wanting to buy it, but can't cause I have no clue where it came from. In the bigger scheme of things this file sharing is for testing media for REAL purchase. I think this is an injustice. And YES, it's mostly about the porn clips. Darn it! |
@massillonmarine: Then download clips, add metadata (you can do so in library using the comment-button) and share them. |
Once again, here's another thing I learned. Barney Style. Could you please break that down in terms that Barney could teach it to a pre-schooler. Thanks. |
massillonmarine, unfortunatelly, there's nothing much you can do aside from re-naming your own files "right" (= with the exact title, without adding stuff like: "plz share" and other crap of the sort). The reason for that is that the files are not provided by Limewire itself. It's like TV: there are several channels and you can watch any show those channels air at this and that time. However, it's not the TV (=the machine) itself that contains the shows, but the channels who "send" the shows to it. In this (pathetic) example, the TV is the program (Limewire) and the channel companies are the users all over the world: you can see (=download) whatever shows (=files) they offer. Coming back to the problem at hand, the consequence of all this crap below is that if 100 users share the same file, all of them would have to rename that file to the correct "title" so that all of the copies of the files that appear in your searches are correctly named. Confused? Hmm. Let's say that you see a file named X. Good. You download the file X from the 100 available sources and discover that its true name is actually Z. Cool. You rename the file to Z. Consequence: if I search for file Z, I will see one copy of that file (that you have) and if I search for X, 99 copies will pop-up. In other words, for all Z files to show up as Z in my search, all the people that have that file have to rename it to Z. Now, you can start by renaming your own file and sharing that. You can also try (very very troublesome) chatting with everyone that shares the file X and asking them to rename it to Z... |
I understand completely. Thanks. I don't know the exact procedures for posting a file, but I would hope that there is the best possible information on the file uploaded. Does anyone know how we could verify or something the file to get the exact title on there the first time? I know this is similar to asking you to pull a rabbit out of your orifice, but it's worth askin to me. |
@Murasame: Not quite. If one file is named correctly, and all others have the same hash, LimeWire wil use the correct name, but download from all 100 Users who have the file, also from those with misnamed ones. |
Yeah, but the thing is that even if there is one file named correctly and it is grouped together with the other 99 files (still in the previous example) in the search results, that means that I still will see the wrong filename. It's just that somewhere in the group of 100 there is one file that is named correctly, right? |
best name when you see five files with different names or versions of the same, pick the best on the basis of its name convention if present. once in a while, i will get search results back, and see that someone hase one of my renamed files. we just have to stick to a few if not one convention, and try to fix files we get. My request I haven't read through the entire thread, so maybe these have already been mentioned: 1. I'd like to be able to turn the popups OFF. These are the boxes that pop up whenever I roll over an item. 2. Ability to change font size of items in a list. Thanks. |
Those are the tooltips, I assume. The option could be placed in the User-Interface Prefs. |
An option to turn on an auto-ban of IP addresses after they serve you a corrupt file would be very helpful |
The corruption may occur during the download process (you can experience this even when downloading from a site) so a file may not necessarily corrupt at it's source. In other words, even if you get a corrupt file from a certain source, it doesn't mean that that soure is serving a corrupt file, so to ban automatically all IP adresses that serve corrupt files you would need a pretty amazing "corrupt-file" criteria thingy. |
Drap & Drop Problem? The Drap and Drop support thing is no longer there with the new version of Limewire? (4.2.6) What happened? And also the renaming of files? Can you put this feature back on please ? |
Drag & Drop _within LimeWire_ was removed, as was renaming files, because it was way too problematic. The DnD stuff was homemade and was causing lots of problems, and lots of people were renaming things without meaning to. We weren't able to come up with a feasible solution in time, so the best all around solution was to remove on. On the plus side, native DnD was added. You can drag files from downloads, the library, of the playlist out to the desktop or a folder or your favorite media app. |
An ultrapeer ... Reposting this message on behalf of member: -------------- At home my computer is a solid and stable ultrapeer, and when I'm at work I'd like my client (being a leaf) to be able to connect to my home machine automatically as one of it's ultrapeers. It seems to me I used to be able to select certain hosts as prefered ultrapeers but I hadn't taken advantage of it and now that I have good reason too I can no longer find the option. I don't know if I imgained it or if it was removed. |
Don't know if this has been discussed, and my thread for this is currently one below this sticky but: "find more sources for download" right-click capabilitie just like how Kazaa has it. It works amazing and the downloads are so much faster than Limewire, I ditched Kazaa and K-Lite do to the amount of lag and crap and memory usage it used on my computer. If Limewire had the "find more sources for download" right click option, then I think LimeWire can most of the "slow download" complaints. think about it. thanks. |
not really something needed, just something i would like to have. but i'd like to be able to keep the total number of hits one of my files has. instead of it going back to 0 when you exit. |
Stop Forced Sharing I would like it if the "download" directory were not automatically added to the "shared" directories list. That way I can inspect downloaded files before releasing them further into the network. This would also help keep fakes, corrupts and virusses out of the network. |
The forced sharing is what can keep the network running. Else most people will just download, but only share while downloading and afterwards the file will vanish. Even though I use Acquisition, which doesn't share my download folder at once, this is only, because my share is ful enough, that I normally have my upload speed maxed out at 80% of the time, but with the files, which I want to spread. It is a setting for all those, who just want to get their files. If you don't want to share at once after downloading, you have to remove the files manually from that folder, which means: Behaviour, which doesn't aid the network is more work than behaviour, which helps it, which is exactly the right way to do it. And besiders: Through Partial File Sharing you contribute to a file even while you're downloading. |
Ah, didn't notice the sticky, but... The player needs a fast forward and a rewind button. Otherwise, it's great. |
seperate the dowloads section from the search results section |
priorized download queue I'd like to be able to prioritize queued downloads, so that the next time a download slot becomes available, I have control over which file LW tries to download next. |
Re: priorized download queue Quote:
You can tell LimeWire which downloads to start next. Right-click on the column headers in the download area and check the 'Priority' column. Select the download you want to start next and click the up arrow until it's at the top! |
Partial file sharing control LWPro: There are soooo many garbage files/ decoys/ viruses in the system. I used to be able to choose NOT to share partially downloaded files (so I could check 'em out first). I want that option back so I'm not eating up bandwidth spreading unwanted GARBAGE |
Tools>Options>Uploads>Basic the option is still there. (Mac that's Prefs>Uploads>Basic) ;) |

decentral Update and Distribution System I just had an idea how LimeWire updates could be distributed more easily for Users and far less resource hungry for developers (and with which Upgrading would also become more natural for Users). It is to distribute New major Versions just like your distribute QRP-Tables. For this, LimeWire needs to have a signature-checking mechanism integrated, so only trusted content (the program-updates) are being sent actively through the network. I got to that Idea, because a senator in california wants to make distributing p2p-software without a way to censor it illegal. So I thought: Do the programmers need to be exposed? Any program which gets a new Version automatically begins distributing it to its peers, but it also contacts random nodes from the HostCatcher, so that determining a first source gets pretty hard (most files travel the standard Query-Tree, but there are at all times other trees springing to life). It would need have more than one key, so that multiple key together, maybe three or so, can revoke another key (which the owner of that key should also be able to do) and at the same time multiple keys together should be able to introduce a new key. But I don't want to go to deep into details. This would make the network somewhat more homogenous (updating gets far easier) and would completely avoid reliance on any central source, because even updates would be done via a decentralized structure. That way even shutting down the LimeWire website couldn't disrupt the developement of LimeWire, and there would be far less incentive for the music- and film-industry (RIAA and MPAA) to try it. As a far fetched thought it might even be possible to build a CVS-System (maybe relying on patches) on top of Gnutella, so that even the developement would become decentral (and mostly unstoppable, because files are being pssed through the network and also randomly, so you can only find the first source with very much effort, and thhen you can't be certain it really is the first source. |

Renaming Downloaded Files I can't believe we cannot rename files. Like on Kazaa Lite, you should be able to rename a file once you download it. Unless I'm missing something as a new member, I don't see an option for that. I like to keep my files in a certain order, but I am forced to view the name of that file as it was entered by the original user. Please add that option, or if we have that option, please tell me how to use it. Thanks much! |
Rename is added back in the current beta, which will be released into production very shortly. Drag/Drop within the library will follow soon. |
Renaming files That's great! Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me when the current beta is supposed to be released, and will all current members be able to update to it? Did I understand correctly that the drag/drop will be added shortly thereafter? Thanks, again. |
UNshared folders in Library Please show unshared folders in red in the library (just like unshared files are shown in red). Thanks |
