Feature Requests

Please add your feature requests to this thread.

The following requests are already noted, please do not add them again.

Please add your request as replies to this thread, in a concise manner. If you want to discuss a feature in detail, please do so in another thread.

Thanks very much.

- Option for the maximum simultaneous transfers of a single file, preventing a file from taking all upload slots.

- Reorganize preferences: No more firewall option, rename port to firewall, the search option (limit, speed, quality) removed, no more compression option, no more out of band option.

- New system of requeries [not going to happen any time soon]

- A file rating system, allowing users to collectively rate fake/garbage/good/excellent files.

- Browse clients other than LimeWire from upload window

- Allow browsing firewalled hosts

- Use NIO to take up less resources/RAM

- Client side queueing of multiple requests to a single source

- Remember advanced stats checkbox between launches

- Remember preferred sort order between launches

- Ability to clear existing sort on a table.

- Explore button on download page

- A private folder accessable only by trusted users

- Allow certain files/folders to get preferred status in upload slots

- An option to connect to fewer ultrapeers when acting as a leaf

- A mailto button for formatting & sending magnet links

- Multiple download folders for different types of downloads

- Sharing of portions of iTunes selections by choosing a playlist

- An edit menu (and ability to copy/select any displayed text)

- Ability to send download filename in search box.

- A mini LimeWire to handle magnets

- A window menu to bring chat/options/stats/main window to the foreground

- Browse host to display results with directory structure like in the library

- Drag & Drop support

- Monitor pane moved

- Bandwidth status displayed in the GUI at all times.

- Searching for phrases together, using "LimeWire Rocks" and finding only results where LimeWire Rocks, instead of limewire on the rocks.

- Seekable media player.

- Symbol next to the 'X' on search tabs to show the context menu.

- Re search for corrupt files automatically. (Should be taken care of already with TigerTree support, actually.)

- Recently searched drop down box.

itunes support for windows

et voilà May 22nd, 2004 01:41 PM

I want a firewall indicator light in the LW gui: green you are unfirewalled on the port and yellow you are firewalled (like bearshare). Once you click on the yellow light it bring you to a page explaining how to configure firewalls and routers for gnutella. Also, this light would be hideable in the display menu - show /hide-. The idea is to lower the number of firewalled nodes which will benefits to all users.

stief May 22nd, 2004 03:15 PM

--repeat search added to the context menu of the downloads pane

-*****ulative search results for repeat search (differentiate old sources by grey colour?).

--truncated filenames in downloads pane visible by tooltip (as with search items).

--clicking on a download enters the filename in the keyword search box (automatically or by contextual menu). [redundant if the edit menu happens].

--a Gnutella CONNECTION TESTER (stand-alone or integrated), that will diagnose and rate the health of the connection relative to what the user can expect with a browser, identify upstream blocks and filters, and link to suggestions for improvement as et voilà rightly suggests. [useful even if the firewall->firewall transfers become widespread] Old request here

--moving all the advanced stats (and maybe similar GUI options like IP, Location, and Vendor) to a standalone app or plugin (Pro goody?)

--first time splash screen that also warns about slow start-up because of hashing. Better yet, the hashing of 50 files before connections are attempted the first time. Hashing of further files and folders made relative to CPU usage.

--Add File menu item added to the Library->File Menu [already covered under Drag and Drop addition?]

--support for bit-torrents/bitprints/multiple networks or whatever the current filesharing fashion happens to be ;) . Do unto other networks better than they have done unto gnutella [discussion over here]

et voilà May 22nd, 2004 03:40 PM

LoL Stief :D (are you serious? Multinetwork thing is a flawed idea from start... forget it) Your other suggestions are great however ;)

- For OSX: "Show file" (as opposed to opening it). With that we can simply find the file in the filemanager.

- For OSX: Add downloaded mp3 to Party-Jukebox-Playlist (remember, that te playlist is called differently in differently localized iTunes).

arne_bab May 27th, 2004 09:27 AM

- When finding a file which I already have locally, LimeWire should automatically try it as alt-loc for my local files and, when successful, add it as alt-loc for that file.

Isn't it the same as the existing "Explore" button? I don't know if this button found on Windows (that opens an Explorer Window showing the directory where a selected file is stored) has an equivalent on OSX's Finder. May be this button should be named "Find" (rather than "Explore" on Windows)?

arne_bab May 27th, 2004 11:37 AM

In the OSX-GUI we only have a "start"-button, which plays the file, but no "show"-button (which is how it should be named in OSX)

rkapsi May 27th, 2004 11:53 AM

The "Explore" button is in the Library.

Feature request: less Buttons, more Shortcuts as replacement (backspace could be used to kill/clear marked downloads etc etc).

arne_bab May 27th, 2004 12:30 PM

I don't need it in the library, I need it for the download-pane. For the Library I can as well switch to the finder, it is quicker.

arne_bab May 28th, 2004 04:44 AM

- More intelligent swarming and PFS-Downloads, which download the Junks in a better organized way, so the file spreads quickly and when the original source goes offline the downloaders can feed off their respective fileparts while preserving the ability to preview media-files (maybe downloading a third of the file strait from the beginning and the rest randomly chosen starting at the first or second third of the file.
Maybe giving out a map, which parts the clients have and downloading rare parts first.

verdyp May 28th, 2004 05:42 AM

If you have seen the CVS sources, you'll see some major features added for a future release:
- notably a better looking and easier meta-data editor
- and parsing/editing support for Ogg (Vorbis-audio, video?) and MPEG4 (AVI, WindowsMedia?, Real?, QuickTime?, DivX?) meta-data formats.

Newer file format parsers may be added. Why not:
- PDF file information (displayed in the file properties dialog in Acrobat)
- ZIP/JAR files with embedded comments or meta-information folder?
- EXE files on Windows (version info)
- Version resources on Mac OS
- RPM or Debian package information for Linux/Unix
- Source signatures (the "@#filename version date" ID string, which is often compiled within the constant string area), very common on Linux/Unix
- ISO CD image information (TOC and description sector)

Some of these formats will be complex to support, and should be developped separately as pluggable JAR files. I wonder if there is already such common meta-data framework for Java with a common API to parse and edit embedded meta-data. If so, this could save lots of development time by LimeWire itself.
Such plugins already exist for Windows explorer or are part of the MacOS standard (resource forks).

Note that MacOS users should be allowed to share their files directly without needing to package them into archives. The absence of resource fork data in downloaded files is a problem; may be Limewire on MacOS should be able to create and integrate a compound format allowing distributing in one auto-packaged file both the data fork and resource fork, which would be expanded automatically to a usable form once the download completes.

Or, may be, extend query hits on Mac OS, so that they can include multiple URNs: one for the data fork, one for the resource fork. On the Windows NTFS filesystem, this exists in the "file streams" support, which is currently used mostly in hidden system files, where extra streams are accessed using a "$" separator between the main filename and the extra stream name.

In Windows Explorer, the filesize displayed ignores the space used by extra streams, and the stream is treated as if it was a separate file associated with the main file (so a NTFS file can appear empty with size=0 in Explorer because its data fork is empty, but have a non-zero stream length; in addition, Windows and OS/2 support out-of-band meta-data stored in a special database)

So I wonder how Java supports these out-of-band streams or meta-data. I did not see any formal API to handle them in Java, without using external JNI services.

improved Chat

I'd like to see Chat become the fifth tab in Limewire, with subtabs (a la multiple search queries) for each chat session. A hot list of known users would be nice too.

Here are some ideas...

I like to see these problems solved :

Maybe with a intergreated proxy finder,
as alot of my fellow studentes are getting e-mail with treates of law suites.... if the don't stop sharing mp3's and/or e-books

(maybe someting like jap)

could you make a volume control near the music player and maybe a search button and incorporate videos.

Anu June 13th, 2004 01:31 PM

New (required) features

-Fast forward/rewind
-The abiliy to burn cds directly from Limewire
-Improved categorization of the "Library" including perhaps a file search, and sorting by date

Please:

Stop automatically jumping to the search page when selecting from the incomplete file—usually if I’m in the incomplete file I’m restarting more than one download and it is annoying that it jumps to the search page each time which brings me to a solution or another request.

Do away with highlighting selection and put a check box in front of the items. That way we could achieve multiple actions with a single button section.

Thank you,

DG

arne_bab June 25th, 2004 05:06 AM

It would be great if files could be sorted so, that files I already have get sorted to the bottom.
(either by clicking a column or by setting a preference... maybe also by sorting according to file type or in some other way I don't think of at the moment)

sberlin June 27th, 2004 06:20 PM

You can select multiple rows in all tables (search, download, upload) except the library by hitting 'ctrl' and selecting another row. On OSX, since the standard is holding the command key (instead of ctrl), versions 4.1+ of LimeWire will also select multiple rows if command is pressed. Support for selecting rows this way in the library is tentatively planned for 4.1.

You can select multiple rows in all tables (including the library) by selecting one row, keeping the mouse pressed, and dragging it down to further rows. You can also select multiple rows (all rows between the two) by selecting one row, pressing and holding shift, and then selecting a second row.

Almost actions (download, resume, launch, etc...) will apply to every selected row. If there are some that do not, let us know and we'll fix them.

You can sort search results by 'files I have', 'files I'm downloading', 'files I've partially downloaded' by clicking the quality column (the column with the stars, or the various icons indicating if the file is downloading, saved or incomplete).

You can sort by extension by clicking the 'type' column.

You can sort by any column by clicking on that column.

how bout

a limit the d/l speed so if u r on dial-up the files dont eat up all the bandwidth and yes a pause button would be good to have to keep it from continuing once u need the bandwidth for a internet page for a few mins.

arne_bab July 3rd, 2004 10:47 AM

Add search results for files to the download mesh (or test them, then add them).

Add results from one search to all searches, whre they fit.

DarkDoyle July 7th, 2004 11:54 PM

Multiple filters

7/8/04

I would like to request that multiple filter lists for keywords be available. That way one can change lists according to the type of search one wants to do.

I would also like to be able to order/sort the keyword filter lists. This would make manageing such lists easier.

It would be nice if these filter lists could be sellected directly from the search pane/window.

It would also be nice if one could have a place on the search pane/window to enter keywords to exclude just for that search.

A way to enter a search for an exact phrase (such as enclosed in "") would improve the power of searching.

Thanks,

Doyle

If I'm understanding things correctly here, ANYONE can "Browse Hosts" on MY computer?

And see all the files that I've got in the "Shared" folder on this computer?

Can you not make it to where other users can NOT browse everything you've got (like KL)?

Or is this what the "Trusted User/Sharer" thing is supposed to accomplish?

Seems kind of nuts to let anyone and everyone have access to a list of everything you've got. Pete

LimeySalior July 21st, 2004 12:20 PM

Maximize upload speed based user defined preferences.

It would be nice if I never saw a “upload speed 0kb” again.
I have an idea to prevent this:
:D
lets say, I set my “upload Bandwidth” at 40kb’s, my “Max Upload Slots” set at 40(users). Ok that’s a lot of users, but I could do it right? So assume that 40 users actually try to upload from me, they are now downloading at 1kb. If I am the only user sharing this file, and it’s a decent size file, that’s going to take way to long, and I doubt its going to be successful.
So if there was a ratio added to connect these user defined features, so that the min speed any one user might download from would be, say 5kb or so, that would be great.

trap_jaw4 July 21st, 2004 03:07 PM

LimeWire does its best to prevent uploading at <1KB, unfortunately there are some other clients that frequently upload at very low speeds.

max_ooze July 29th, 2004 05:22 AM

How about a slider that allows upload speeds between 6.93k/s and 10.94. The current LimeWire scheme of quantizing us as modem/cable is a real pain. I have a cable connection but I sometimes set my conection to "modem" just to slow down my uploads when I need to do stuff, can't the slider go all the way down? I mean 1/2 the time I just want to slow down my personal uploads 'cause I like seeing 60+ people connected to my PC when I set it to "UltraPeer". Cmon guys make the upload cap slider go from 0.001 to unlimited (on a log scale), I wanna share but your quantizer makes it hard. Soz Im so poor as to only have 15k upstream but you know, takes all sorts.

max_ooze July 29th, 2004 05:47 AM

Hey, just as I'm sitting here drinking some really good australian beer I thought "hey how 'bout a toggle so you could select between file uploader and network UltraPeer" just too keep the network churning along out here in the boonies. Cheers.

trap_jaw4 July 29th, 2004 01:11 PM

LimeWire already reduces the upload speed for ultrapeers, even if you can't see that in the options.

gooer July 31st, 2004 10:06 PM

A feature to search your library within Limewire (for keywords, etc.) would be amazing.

sberlin July 31st, 2004 10:52 PM

gooer -- would something similiar to the way search results are filtered be okay for the library?

To faster I can download a file (especially a large file), the better.

Downloads Progress

How about instead of showing the downloaded percentage of a file, why not show the actual # of KB downloaded ( i.e: 2496 of 10892KB download)?

but all you need to do now is go to your LW Lib window & incomplete folder & press refresh every now & again. But then listing the size as suggested & % would be good (maybe an option to click at the top of the Progress column.)

Back to my 1st point about checking the Library. I've noticed that on large dwnlds (particularly those over 100 MB) that at one time it shows perhaps 101 or 102k KB & then the next time I refresh it, it shows 100.6 MB or something. And whilst the 1st one showed it in kb the 2nd in MB. (This has happened numerous times) Is there some issue there? (I particularly notice it on my connection.)

iTunes for Windows

Hey,
Just a quick feature request.
I would love iTunes integration in LimeWire for XP like on LimeWire for OSX.

TigerTooth August 6th, 2004 02:29 PM

A feature that limewire should have is the option to download the newer version of LimeWire using LimeWire that would make it easier then going to the website.

vertigre August 19th, 2004 03:25 PM

Basic security

I would like basic security, this comes in two parts.

First of all, please allow SSL to be configured, even if it's anonymous DH key exchange, that's better than nothing. One of the dorms I lived in had hub style networks, so everyone in the building could see everything you did on the internet, including everything you downloaded with Limewire. :-( It's not a serious issue, but it should be trivial to add a capability to use SSL if both clients support it, considering that the code is already in most JVMs.

Secondly, it would be nice for there to be basic privacy and anonymity. Allow the ultra-peers to have a "host on your behalf" option, where an ultra-peer will pretend to have your files, and will act as an intermediary in all transfers. This could help with caching (perhaps accumulating files on ultra-peers), and allow the edge nodes to remain private. It could also allow an ultra-peer plausible denyability for everything they host.

The best way to do this is to have an "intermediary probability" that can be set between 0.0 and 1.0 by the user. If the setting is at zero, then you never host on behalf of anyone, if it's 1.0, then you host on behalf of anyone. If it's somewhere in between, then you can't really prove that the ultra-peer was responsible for a file because you don't know that he wasn't hosting someone else just because he refused to host you.

That would be a very simple addition that would make the network FAR more resiliant.

trap_jaw4 August 19th, 2004 05:48 PM

If you want to mask Gnutella traffic completely you would have to break the protocol.
So there probably won't be any SSL in the near future.

limeysailor August 22nd, 2004 09:50 PM

explain upload options better

I was under the assumption this would limit the number of uploads a person can use at any given time. Now I am under the assumption it is a total value for some given amount of time. Either way it is confusing.

So does it mean (a): If I allow 6 uploads, and set the uploads per person to 2, then one user could upload all the files I have to offer, but only two files at any given time.
-or-
Does it mean (b): A user can upload 2 files from me, thats it. Forever (or for the day? whatever)

I would like to have option (a), but I need some clarification on what it means.

trap_jaw4 August 23rd, 2004 01:08 AM

it's (a)

I back this completely. The reason is very simple: I'm being sued in Germany AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

I think I'll be able to win the case, but I don't like the possibility that my provider might monitor my traffic and see, which files I share, and which get uploaded from me.

At the moment the only files I share are those mp3s I recorded myself, but I want LimeWire to allow me to down- and upload so far anonymously, that noone can simply get my details without legal action (I don't care, if the police is able to track me back, when they put in their full force, because they should still be able to track people sharing child-porn etc., but they shouldn't be able to do it without quite some effort).

I want to have it so, that noone can prove he/she downloaded a specific file from me, without some major research by the police. It must simply be hard enough, that it can't be done routinely.

Well, what is that supposed to hide? Anybody who is able to open a command line can get similar infos from the OS without LimeWire being able to hide it. Just type netstat -a on OS X or netstat /a on Windows and you see any IP number that is connected to your computer.

Make it impossible to be sure, that the host which serves the file really shares it. If that host could also be a proxy, which doesn't even know what it souted through it, youl can't be ure, if the browsed IP really is the source.

"complete" and a "completed" distinction in the upload

Im not sure if this is a good idea, considering legal issues with to much FYI's. But I would like to know when a file is complete - i.e. complete this second, versus completed- downloaded hash file. This would help know when I can close limewire. Sometimes I feel bad cause I dont know if the upload is gonna restart in the next few minutes or not.

Your spyware may have made LimeWire work because it modified the TCP/IP protocol stack to include what is called (on Windows) a "Winsock LSP", i.e. a plugin for Windows sockets that normally performs address resolution, or supports ancillary functions through helper processes.

I do think that you have not completely removed the spyware, and that the spyware's installed LSP is still there, even if it is no longer working as expected as the main part of the spyware components are no longer there.

I suggest you use "SpyBot Search & destroy", and get into its "advanced mode", where you'll find the "Tools" button on the sidebar: then click on "Winsock LSPs". You'll see a list of LSPs installed in the Windows networking stack. You need to keep the following ones:

(1) Transport Protocols:

(1a) MSAFD NetBios (\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{...}): several instances are present, this is normal as there are several networking interfaces for the internal local host, in addition to remote accesses, DSL modems, Ethernet cards, Wifi adapters, ...

(1b) MSAFD NetBios (\Device\NetBT_Tcpip6_{...}): same thing, except that this is related to the support of the newest internet protocol "IPv6" instead of the legacy IPv4 protocol with 32-bit IP addresses.

(Both are supported in %systemroot%\system32\mswsock.dll; these two support the IP protocol for Internet, and optionally the NetBios protocol over IP, a.k.a. "SMB", used for Windows shared files and services; don't remove them as you would delete at the same time the support for TCP/IP transport, needed for Internet; instead configure your firewall to block the RPC/DCOM port and the Microsoft files/printers/services sharing server ports).

(2) NS Providers (namespaces, i.e. resolution of names to addresses):

(2a) TCP/IP (%systemroot%\system32\mswsock.dll): this contains the DNS client that resolves hostnames like "www.limewire.com" to an IP address. Don't remove it.

(2b) NTDS (%systemroot%\system32\mswsock.dll): this contains the WINS client that resolves Windows hostnames and services for NetBIOS/SMB or with a NT Directory Service: in a LAN, or optionally over the Internet over a secured virtual channel. Don't remove it, as it is needed to access to internal resources of your local host from local applications; instead, you need to configure the Firewall or IP settings to exclude the support of NetBios over Internet connections.

(2c) NLA namespace (Network Location Awareness) (in %systemroot%\system32\mswsock.dll): this supports namespaces needed for wireless or mobile networks, and allows locating a server managing you private domains. Also needed as the base support for PNRP (the secured Peer-2-Peer protocol from Microsoft). It is installed if you have enabled this P2P protocol, but possibly with other components, or with some Wifi connections (I think it is needed for the support of WEP and WPA authentication on WiFi accesses or routers).

(2d) the namespace provider for PNRP cloud (in %systemroot%\system32\pnrpnsp.dll): needed for Microsoft P2P protocol, it allows locating hosts and services in the P2P cloud with their GUID; it contains a search agent and a topology builder; in Microsoft P2P, searches occur only between authenticated servents, through secured channels, that create one or several "clouds" located anywhere on a private LAN, or on Internet, without a central server. Authentication works through hosts certificates; hosts, files or services are identified by GUIDs, and this PNRP protocol allows performing a distributed replication of a virtual file server or service, and locating hosts on this virtual network via their GUID. This MSPNRP protocol is still in beta form (Microsoft has learned a lot from experiments in Gnutella and other P2P protocols, notably when tuning its "topology builder" and optimizing searches with broadcasts in a instable network with lots of dynamic routes; I absolutely don't know the performance of this P2P protocol, but Microsoft does not intend to build it for free file sharing between unidentified servents: it requires using authentic certificates registered in a central PKI authority, with a verifiable identity, so the build topology will always be identifiable by a responsable network owner; apparently not suitable for personnal P2P applications due to privacy issues). The support for PNRP in uninstallable (check the Microsoft documentation about NETSH)

You may also find some other LSP's installed by some antivirus; but beware of LSP's installed by some free "popup remover" bars, as they sometime include their own spyware!

Note that the Windows XP Service Pack 2 contains tools to remove unsafe LSPs and restore the default configuration if it gets damaged.

Also XP SP2 contains a builtin local firewall that is known to cause problems to some Gnutella users: it requires a manual configuration to let incoming connections and datagrams from the Internet to your local Gnutella ports 6346 (TCP required for the base Gnutella protocol, UDP needed for the new Out-Of-Band search protocol).

davidneale September 22nd, 2004 02:15 AM

The Filter Results hlp a lot in sorting out the returned search results, but I'd prefer the search function to have AND and OR control, so that far fewer unwanted results are returned. At the moment, the seacr function treats all separate words as having an OR relation; in almost every case that I use separate words, they should be AND.

Folder searching/downloading

It would be nice to be able to search for folders, if you are for example searching for a full album and a one click to download the whole folder.

backmann October 6th, 2004 09:13 PM

I'd like to enter myself my conection speed. I mean, I have a cable connection, but the upload/download speeds that LW has for Cable are not the same as mine. Therefore, I can't configure my optimal upload speed as well.

Another thing: I'd like to see exactly who are sharing the files that are displayed on the search field. Let's say I see two files, and I want to donwload both of them. If they are both from an user that has a slow connection, I'd rather download just one at a time, because if I click both of them, they would go very slowly and maybe I won't finish any of them.

Thanks

Ivan
