limewire CAN determine number of currently connected hosts.
No it can't those numbers are wrong by a factor of 10 - 500.

hey, if it can't measure why do older versions do it, and if ya twist your way through it statistics tells you?
Those numbers do not reflect the size of your network horizon anymore since the introduction of ultrapeers.

why not just put it up front?
Because they are all wrong and the LimeWire developers know that they are.

1. we can get our own players/viewers/etc
2. we want number of host
3. we want browse host shared files
4. i for one am sick of bot spammers
5. anyway to block out certain ip's from search results [currently only blocks chat - i would like to give those twits a piece of my mind.]
2. is not really possible
3. is already possible
5. is already possible, too - although not with one click yet

okay number of host may be a no can do, but your possible list have not been implemented.

5. [blocking ip addresses on search] definately not - it blocks chat. that's all it does.
filtering out bot spammer ip addresses would help a lot.
of course the spammer wouldn't want the rest of us to be able to tune him out... but then the rest of us could careless what spammers want. possible yes, implemented, no.

3.[search host for their files] would be useful on spammer bots too. possible yes [used to be included] - implemented absolutely not.

options->filters->hosts

LimeWire does not display results from blocked hosts.

The browse host button returned in version 2.5

correct. One click blocking would be nice. We'll see..

I like having the number of hosts up, even though I know it is horridly inaccurate. So, I do. Probably wouldn't be a good thing for everyone though

I added one-click blocking in openwire, I think... So you could certainly take it from the code, Otaru-kun. By the way I do have a couple of other patches you might want to add to AquaLime, for example checking for illegal characters in filenames to make "Could Not Move To Library" errors close to impossible, a patch increasing download success rate by making LimeWire more aggressive when downloading (retrying hosts even if the connection failed once) and one adding support for magnet links.

"Could not move to library"

Guys, guys, guys !!!!

If you continue to ignore the "Could not move to library" problem, it is going to kill this product !!!!!!!!!

I have spent considerable time experimenting with different solutions and nothing *fixes* it. I have tried every version from 2.6.3 to 2.8.6 and they all do it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it numerous times. I have lost at least 50 downloads.

There are numerous complaints in this forum and I have only seen a few explanations. None of these explanations hold water.

Explanation # 1. The file has special characters. Response: I did not see any special characters in any of the 50+ downloads that failed. Are the special characters hidden?

Work-around #1. Kill the download before it finishes and restart it. Response: If the problem is special characters, then why does killing the download and restarting it work??? It should fail either way, right?

Don't take my word for it. Search through this forum and read all of the different comments where people HAVE had success with this work-around.

Explanation # 2. The file was corrupted. Response: Limewire only reported corruption in 1 of the 50+ files.

Explanation # 3. Hard drive is full. Response: I have over 50 megs. available on my hard drive.

Explanation # 4. The problem is caused by a Firewire drive. Response: I do not have a Firewire drive.

Explanation # 5. Insufficient system memory. Response: I upgraded from 128 megs to 256 megs of ram and still get this error.

Work around #2. Go to the Incomplete folder and move the file manually. Response: I have not been able to find any of the 50+ downloads that failed with this error. It appears that Limewire deletes the file from the Incomplete folder BEFORE it determines that it can't save it to the Shared folder.

Don't take my word for it. Search through this forum and read all of the different comments where people have NOT had success with this work-around.

At this point, I have completely given up on Limewire. I have not had a successful download in 2 weeks!!! I really like the product and I am not trying to slam it. I just want some one to take the problem seriously and fix it.

Thanks!
Lee

crap. Wish I'd read that a couple hours ago. I just did too. I'll take a look at how you did it, wouldn't surprise me if it was more efficient :)

Illegal characters patch is a good idea. Thanks for the heads up. I assume it doesn't display results with illegal characters? Magnet links certainly has my attention. Heck, there's a lot of stuff in there that could be fun :)

Lemme know if there's anything you'd like from AL, like the shareaza security file importing, and I can get my code up somewhere.

How's it going with that chat thing?

trap_jaw February 4th, 2003 05:32 AM

Not too well at the moment, - I have a very important exam next week, so I don't have much time for it right now. I think I'll have a working version ready early next month but for now I have other priorities.

i'm pretty sure greg sent an email to the dev mailing list a little while ago with a question regarding macs & magnet links -- since you're the local mac expert [and with good reason], any tips? (see the mailing list for the full question... )

MamiyaOtaru February 8th, 2003 02:19 PM

I've gotten them to work in windows, it's a real pain (I'm prolly missing something) I'll see if I can work something out in Linux, but I would have no clue about OSX and have no acess to a Mac. You were prolly talking to trap_jaw anyway :)
