Default Freeloader Prevention?!

I know that it's a petty peeve, but I'm Limewire really needs to create a way to prevent freeloaders from having their way if that's the user's choice. Yes, I've checked off "rarely" under options...yet & still they keep creeping through!! I'm sharing over 5,000 files, and I don't appreciate people coming in that aren't sharing ANYTHING WHATSOEVER - it's rude, it's greedy, it's selfish and I'm not having it!

In many ways I agree with you. But it's not easy to determine if the other person is sharing. Browse host is not always reliable. I can browse someone, gives zero results. 15 mins later I re-browse & they have over 600 files shared. Or vice versa. It's happened many a time.

Some people choose not to share due to pressures from their ISP & possibly their local copyright laws. If they have been asked not to share *** by their isp or lose service, then they don't really have much choice.

Then you have the newbie users, who start off with nothing. But after downloading for some time slowly build up some files to share.

But yes, there are people who are I, me & myself only. Never interested in sharing. Don't care that it's a share network. Don't care about giving back. Don't care about anything except what they download.

Just as important as sharing is allowing yourself to become an Ultrapeer which helps other people connect to the network. People who are UP's often don't have as many people uploading as they might otherwise. Just my thoughts

All the same, I do wish there was better detection of those who do or don't share. Other p2p networks have such abilities.

Just to emphasise a point LOTR has made, how can you tell if someone is or is not a freeloader?

For example, I do not have chat enabled and my PC is behind two firewalls, the NAT table in my modem/router and my Norton Firewall (NPF), so I am pretty certain that no one can browse my shared files. Yet I can see incoming searches and people (IP addresses actually) downloading files from my PC.

So, before you get yourself "bent all out of shape" over freeloaders make sure you know how to identify them because, as LOTR has said,
Quote:
I do wish there was better detection of those who do or don't share
because at the moment there is no way of identifying freeloaders within LW.

UK Bob: OK, that's all well & good...now, please answer the question, are you or are you NOT sharing files? IF THE ANSWER'S NO, THAT WOULD MAKE YOU A FREELOADER.

Now, if there isn't a way to discern a freeloader, why is the notion even presented in "Options"? My point is that there should be a feature where you can choose to block users who truly aren't sharing anything; since we're quoting, "...other P2P networks have such abilities." (Oh, how I miss Kazaa!!!) And no, I'm not referencing those that are brand new to this; we've all been there before and you have to start somewhere...however, you can still browse a new user in most instances!

LOTR: I'm all for playing Ultra Peer(it sounds so superhero-like...lol) - what would I need to do?

He does share files. As he said himself, he still gets uploads. As for why LW still has the option which doesn't work properly, good question. It apparently stopped working or was disabled several versions ago because they found it to be unreliable.

Nothing. The network decides if you are needed as an ultrapeer. You need to be properly configured firewall wise & not see the brick wall in front of blue globe icon at bottom of LW's window. You need to have lots of spare bandwidth for (download &) upload in particular & show this in your settings. UP option needs to be enabled or should I say not disabled. I only became a UP after upgrading my adsl speed from adsl1 to adsl2 with over 10 times the upload capacity. I also changed my connection speed setting from modem to T3. It was a sudden shock to find my LW connected to so many people. The reason I checked was because people are normally uploading from me immediately I open LW, but then I noticed nobody was ... so checked out what was going on. But UP's will still often do both, just in my instances I haven't noticed them do it so far whilst in UP mode.

I have also experienced people who appear to NOT share the first time I browse them but who then suddely have hundreds of files the second go around.

My determination of who is a freeloader is any one who does not allow me to browse their files or if I find that alfter they have downloaded a bunch of files from me they don't appear in their share folder and their share folder contains nothing but junk. When that happens I put their host on my blocked list.

The only question I have is when I block their host am I blockiing them only or a whole lot of people who are also linked to that host address?

Your reasoning is flawed.

Hi Bob,

Would you care to expand your comment just a little so that I know why my way of determining who is or isn't a freeloader is flawed?

from what ive gathered if you have a firewall that disables other people from using the "browse user" feature . so but not being able to use that feature you claim that there freeloading. am i understanding your point right?

Correct - whatever the reason is - be it just plain mean spirited or other technical problems then if someone takes and doesn't give they are by definition a freeloader as far as I am concerned.
