Keeps timing out!

Whenever I try using Newtella or Furi, the programs keep telling me that I "timed out." In the case of Newtella, my connections to different hosts never seem to materialize. Is this because I'm behind a firewall? If so, how in the world can I bypass the wall? (I already tried connecting to different listen ports, including 80 and 8080.)
