Is it Illegal to have LimeWire
because it's basically the same as Napster

note: if this is deleted or closed by a moderator I will assume LimeWire is Illegal.

It's not illegal to have LimeWire.

Neither is it illegal to use LW. It's just that there are ways to use this stuff illegally... (don't ask me how!)

Legal

As long as there is some substantial non-infringing use that it offers, I don't see how anyone could consider it illegal. Napster was MP3 only and there were almost no legal files available (and they used centralized servers), so it got shut down.

The Gnutella network does have files available that are legal. Someone posted a message about sharing MP3 recordings of his class lectures. Probably 90% or more of the files on Gnutella aren't legal to download unless you own a copy of the original. But since it's not centralized, it would be pretty hard to shut Gnutella down even if it were declared illegal.

Why should this side offer a Limewire forum if Limewire would be illegal? :)

Only the upload in some countries the download of copyrighted material is illegal!

Note: To ask such a question is not forbidden so why should I close this thread? :)

It's illegal to dwload copyrighted material. Most of the files on lw are copyrighted.

It's not illegal to use lw however, it just depends what you use it for.

Having and useing LimeWire is in no way, shape, or form illegal. Where the line is drawn is what you choose to download with LW. Downloading copyrighted material without paying for it is illegal. You can get caught, you can go to jail, you can be sued for every cent you posess, but most importantly you can get away with it. In the end it's up to you; you can choose to download copyrighted material and risk the consequences. However if you choose to do so, I would advise that you educate yourself a little about computer/internet security. Download PeerGuardian from MethLabs.org, make sure you have a good (and properly configured) firewall, and get a program to hide your IP address (Steganos, Anonymizer 2004, ect.). Right now taking simple security precautions can keep the RIAA away from you. Whatever you choose to do it is your own choice and neither LimeWire LLC, the owners of these forums, or myself will take any responsibility for your actions. Good luck.
