Poor at math Murasame, I have read the posts for this thread dealing with the calculations for upld/dnld speeds 5 times, you'd think I would have figured it out by now. I must be a lot worse at math than what I thought (been too long out of the class room I guess ):D . I agree that your beginning thread is clear, but I've never understood the Kb/kb/KB transitions. Here's what I've done: 1 ) I've tested my upld/dnld speeds and have come to these results: 535 kilobits/723 kilobits respectively. 2) I divide these numbers by 8 and I come up with 67Kb/s and 90Kb/s respectively. It just doesn't seem correct (I assume I have goofed up somewhere). 3) I have tried the link you supplied for calculating your speeds and still get results that are.......overwhelming:confused: I apologize for beating a dead horse but as I say I don't think my synapses are connecting to your plane of thinking. I hope you can help with this, thanks in advance. WR |
kb->kilobits KB->KiloBytes You may also see KiB which goes for Kibibytes, but that's another story (about decimals and stuff like that. Just stick to the "original" for now) I suppose that what seems wrong to you is the fact that the upload speed (if 723 kb is indeed your upload speed) is greater than you download speed? |
Specs on my system Murasame, Basically these are my specs: AMD Athlon K7 motherboard with 550Mhz processor with 255 MB of RAM; running Windows 98SE with LimeWire Pro 4.2.6 and an ADSL connection. According to this test site: http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp my upld spd: 535/s kilobits and my dnld spd: 723-728 kilobits/s I'm not qute sure what to do with these numbers. It looks like I'm getting nothing close to what most others are getting in terms of the thousand range. Either that or it's being calculated without the thousand, I'm not sure. This is where part of my confusion is coming from. I hope this gives you something to work with. WR |
Wait, you mean that you pay for a 1Mbit connection and you don't understand why the test shows 700kb? If that's the case then read again part of my original post: ADSL and Cable broadband connections are affected by the physical distance from the server. Also, those online speed tests need to be done several times during different times of the day in order to get a more accurate speed estimation. |
You mentioned to go to Preferences/Options window, click on Uploads, then Basic. Now drag it down a little more, around -5 or so of your Upload bandwidth. My question is this.. Do I need to adjust anything under Tools|Options|Downloads|Download Bandwidth ? I didn't see this in the message above and wondered if I need to move the bar from the far right. Thanks |
I would suggest you do the same just so that you have enough bandwidth left to browse the net or something if you want to. |
I'm really confused about this! All i know is that my upstream downstream speeds are 288/512 kbps What does this mean i should set my speeds at? Curenly i have them set at... Download: 39.38 KB/s Uploads: 32.81 KB/s Is tha right? |
Upstream is ok. You can however increase downstream a little (yay!). Pull it up to around 60. |
Problem with d/l Hi, I've a problem. My d/l is going up and down and so on. Beginning with 0 KBs, after 5sec. at 20 KBS, another 5sec. later at 0 KBs. And this for hours and hours. Can't imagine, that this is normal. Plz help, Phil |
Any firewalls? Routers? Anything? |
I followed all the advice here. I am running on a 1.5Mbps DL/256Kbps UL connection. Here are my current settings: Max Downloads: 12 Download Bandwidth: 100% Upload Bandwidth: 26.69KBps Uploads Per Person: 2 Max Upload Slots: 3 I am downloading consistently between 30-50KBps. I'm wondering if this is the best i can hope for, or can i improve my DL speed even more? |
You can hope for a little more: increase a little the number of simultaneous downloads (namely do step f) ) and do the download test by choosing a file that is relatively popular and (preferably) hosted by T3 or Higher connection(s) (because they can upload like crazy. However be careful to download a file that you know for sure doesn't contain malware) |
Upload speed with a router Ok, so if, for example, my upload bandwidth is 256, then I should set my upload speed to about 27. What if I have a cable/DSL router with two computers attached, and both computers are running LW? Should I halve that speed? To 13 or 14, since two computers are sharing my upload bandwidth? |
First, if you have two comps, wouldn't it be better if just one ran LW? And second, I think you should put a little less bandwidth for each since each comp because you'll be using twice the normal bandwidth dedicated to Gnutella messages (I'm not too sure since I have never used LW on two computers sharing the same connection) |
We have two computers each running LW because there are two of us in this household, and we both like to download "our own type of stuff" from LW. Normally it's not really a problem. I had both computers set up to upload at "maximum 100%" and we both can, and do upload pretty well. We can both download pretty well too, but I wanted to tweak the settings to maximize performance and results. It seems like we can both upload on average at about 20K, so I'm leery about setting it lower than that. I originally came to this thread because I've been having problems with large files starting out fast, slowing down, reaching 99% and refusing to complete, but I think it may be a separate issue. |
Hello there Murasame, I've been looking at you posts about configuring LW. They have been very helpful up to a point (not your fault though, I'm just having a few probs with somethings) Wondered if you could help. #1. maximum simultaneous d/loads:- I set this at 5. Mixing it up with maximum d/loads you can perform. (Any ideas how many I should start with. I know you say to play about, lather rinse as required but even some audio files are messing about at 4 - 6 kB/s, it used to be quicker until I started tweaking stuff....lol) #2. Bits and bytes arggghhh!!! (Really got lost when you and Morgwen started discussing the difference between the 2 and decimal and binaries   ) I managed to do my upload speed as per your instructions 256/8 =32-5-27kb/s. But obvioulsly I can't do this with download cos that would end up 59. I'm really sorry but I'm getting to thinking if I can't get one of these things right I'll never get any of them right. Please don't think that I've came straight here and couldn't even be bothered to read any stuff cos I haven't (I saw you said that to musicguy2005 so that proves I've been reading....lol.....) I know I shouldn't set the max simultaneous d/loads straight to 100 but is it ok to start with more that 5?? Thanks very much for all your help, Lindy :) |
So your dld bandwidth is 512Kbps? Then 59KBps is good. And I think you can start experiencing directly at over 10 simultaneous dlds. |
Thanks for the reply, :) But I can't put my dld bandwith to 59KBps though can I (lol.....I'll answer that no I can't). So if I'm using 27KBps for upload how much for dld. I know you've probably already answered this but I'm really just not getting it, sorry. Regards, Lindy |
If you're talking about the dld bandwidth meter thingy they added in the latest releases, I never really bothered with it (it can't go high enough so I just left it to unlimited) |
Hee hee nice one Murasame, That's exactly what I meant. My B/F knows even less about this stuff than I do but he said put it on 100%, but I wasn't sure I should. I have been on this computer for about 11hrs out of the last 23hrs. I realise now that it's unfair just to come straight on here and expect ppl just to answer your questions without having looked at other threads first. I actually think I've learned more using the search because I've read lots of different things. If I had just asked a question and got the answer I wouldn't have learned so much. Many thanks, Lindy x :) :) |

Bandwidth & DL/UL Speeds Oh I am sooooooo confused. Can someone please explain to me how i can find out what my bandwith is? And how do I find out what my DL and UL speeds are? I am getting a great education reading all the forum subjects and thanks to all for helping! |
Modem conn Hi im sure im just stupid but when i pull up my conn it says connected at 45333bps what shd my upload be set at please help |
Murasame you ROCK! Murasame...and everyone else who has been giving info in this particular thread.....THANK YOU!! I finally figured out how to raise my u/l d/l. BUT IT DOES TAKE SOME WORK!!!!! (...to all the newbies like me... especially if you are not that computer literate) Have read about a zillion posts/threads using the loved SEARCH and I will agree that the masses of identical questions didn't help my search. I gave up and then tried again about 20 times over the last few days. I was determined that I could find the info I needed here. ( I had been downloading at a rate of about 2-5KBS and all my uploads seemed to take 20.23.43.22!!!) ANYWAYS.. Thanks!! I probably didn't do it perfect but it works good enough for me. |
hi read murasame's posts but still not having luck currently have XP P3-700, 256 ram, 20 gig HD, limewire pro 4.2.6, a 2mbp/s connection or 2278kbp/s DL and 228 upload, settings are max DL slots 8, upload speed 30.19, upload per person 3, max upl slots 3 downloading from T1 connections 4 stars etc. at 0-10 kbp/s! I'm in a major city also so can't be far from servers exchange etc. Please help! |
 *heavy sigh* i've been reading. yep. and learning too. a big thank-you to all of you.... questioners, answerers, and resident gurus. :D re ya'all's connection speeds: a 70X mghz 25X RAM 2 20gig hd's 56k v92 modem (am rural, upgrade is not feasible, nor practical....no dsl, etc, available) i'm locked at a pathetic 26.4K dialup. that's on a good day. yes, it's the local rural telephone company as a provider. a monopoly.... so what's a gal to do?! ya'all were talkin OOB's in another thread, and i thought OBE's would possibly be faster.....for me. so, i fussed with this darlin progy like this thread suggested. and i noticed two things: folks are droppin in and lookin around.... at my .rm and .wav.... but nothing's being uploaded. LOL.... sorry, but at my speeds i've lil else to offer. today is the first time i've actually d/l'd mp3s. and i tried the adjusting of my upload and download..... but, darlin folks............. downloads for me are a speedy 1/2/and wow, the occasional 3kbs. my question is..... how in the world of gopher mounds (my only hilly view in rural ND) can i balance my ULs and DLs? i d/l'd LW this afternoon. yep. just today! and, my goodness, i've fallen in love with a program. p.s. is it possible to adopt a geek? sorry..... i digress....... |
A 56 kbps modem is the equivalent of 8KB/s however there will be some loss due to overhead. So at very best you'd get a total of 7 KB/s but on average about 5 KB/s. That is the total upload & downld combined (unlike cable/broadband, etc. that have separate upld & downld speeds.) So that means you need to balance your upld & downld bandwidth. eg: say 3-3.5 down & 1.75-2 up. Unfortunately on dial up it's not possible to get better than that. I used LW on dial up for over 3 years (until 6 months ago.) We dial up users often have the hardest (rare ones) to get files ... I mean that in more ways than one lol. For fastest downlds try not to downld too many at once. Keep it to one or 2 or perhaps 3 max. But at 3 you might be testing others patience. lol Make sure you have your firewalls set up correctly for LW to pass thru both ways. See: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml After LW's been on for at least 30 mins or much longer, Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image If it's True then that's good & healthy. If it's False then you have a firewall that's not properly configured for others to upld from you. Quote:

wal, dear Lord...... i did the tweaking and the saving on the DL and the UL. did the 1.75 and the 3. ya gotta know though.... that's being optimistic. rechecked the firewall: all is well. someone has actually uploaded a file from me! whoop whoop! was begining to feel a mite parasitic thar....fer jes a lil bit though. ahhh.... the 26.4k seemed so alien as to be surreal, eh? that's right up there with my initial reaction to this provider. *wipes tears* 'tis true. it is half of the 56k. and tests (those good ol test thingies from MSN) timed it at a 18.?k. my foray into rural ND has caused me to do some heavier drugs. doc's a city slicker, so he's clueless, but he upped the dose on the niacin. keeps the b/p down, ya know. thank you for your speedy response and carin to help. you younguns are mity polite. |
Ya know, I keep coming back to this thread and still have a question I need answered. How do I find out what my upl and dl speeds are? -Windows XP -Cable -LW Pro Ilene |
I am sorry... When I first started reading this thread.. I though. OMG the nerve of that person telling someone their too stupid! (now you can say it return.. The nerve of soem people to critique others..) I am putting part of it down to the flu though. I have to say that this has been the most helpful unhelpful one yet. I have folloed the instructions (for once in simple enough terms even I couldn't miss it..) and while I am not getting any better results, I am to the point I am thinking it might be comcast not me.. Either way you have been incrediably patient in answering the same sort of question differently yet the same each time. I would almost swear you'd been a Teacher once, except I haven't had that many with that much patience.. :) I was going to ask what my expected download speed should be, but then realized that in my stupor right now I couldn't answer the basic questions, so I thought instead I would just change that back handed compliment into a front hand clap of "Thanks" for constantly trying to help us out. |
bandwith check Just a suggestion....www.pcpitstop.com which is a site I LOVE...will test your pc and tell you what your actual band/up and band/down is, plus a bunch of other info....I've used this site for a couple of years now. Alana Quote:

Hey im not sure what i should set my upload bandwith or my maximum downloads to. What do you think they should be set around considering whats below. AMD Athalon XP 2600+ ~2.2 512DDR Nvidia Geforce4 Fx 128DDR 120GB HD Cox 5.0MBPS |
Cox oh dear! They are known to filter & slow p2p use for 'some' people, not all! I'll leave the rest up to Murasame. |
Now Me Please I am on comcast, they said 3mb download, I did the download test on pc pitstop it says 1917kbs Ok. I tried to figure out what you were calculating (and failed miserably) can you be so kind as to tell me what this greek means? They also claim they don't filter P2P so why are my downloads still slow or am I just percieving them to be? what do you want me to share at this point to know what my best settings should be? I am a wireless notebook on xp with very little clue about what I am doing or should be obv. as I feel like I might have screwed up something vice fix it.. I have windows firewall up, but I believe I have the port opened and set up like suggested.. I am sure I will get a "your stupi" but am I missing something or just not seeing the forest for the trees.. |

The speed tests must be done numerous times and at different times of the day in order to get a more accurate estimation of what your download and upload bandwidth are, so go there again and do it all over. As I say in the initial post, the upload speed is important too so find that out too from the tests. Also, I'm greek so the way I understand: "can you be so kind as to tell me what this greek means?" is : "can you be so kind as to tell me what this incredibly obvious and easy to understand thing means?" :D kidding... |
Answer Please I still haven't got a reply, I opened my ports so I am cruising at 50-70-100 but I still have those occasional 10KB/s. I'm hoping I can rise all of my speeds up to 100. What should I do to get my speeds up? I have a McAfee firewall. AMD Athalon XP 2600+ ~2.2 512DDR Nvidia Geforce4 Fx 128DDR 120GB HD Cox 5.0MBPS |
I notice you use Cox. They are known to filter p2p for 'selected' users. Probably those that share or downld a lot. See: ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire BUT this might not affect you. It only seems to affect some people. It's been documented at several p2p forums ... not only affects LW & not everybody. Thus your slow speeds might be due to filtering. |

How?? I have double checked my settings to the one's you guy's have listed imn the forums. I can't find where my errors might be. I am really frusterated can you tell?? Arlene |
I am "re-registered" Boo_hoohoo *guest* now *whymewhynow* I didn't realize till now that I wasn't logging in as a registered person again. I couldn't get into boo_hoohoo for some reason so am starting "over". Please if you can tell me where to look for "Correcting" the problems seen. I did double check the notes to "set up limewire" correctly.. It looks right.. Arlene |
My Download Bandwidth is 219.029 kB/s...does that mean I should put my download speed on LimeWire on "Unlimited"? And what do you think is the best number to type in "Maximum Downloads" ? |

Do you have a router? Any other firewalls? |
Back from Las Vegas Sorry that I haven't been back to get fixed.. LOL was on a mental break in Las Vegas playing with all kinds of glass. Now. I am running my lime wire mainly off my lap top at home. Typical story, seemed to be doing really well downloading then suddenly the download slowed to a stop. I don't know now what to do as I have done so many of the tips and tricks tht I am probably really confused about where to go next. I am on windows xp pro, I use the windows firewall, have the ports set up as told per instructions... Um What else do you want to know at this point? |
My d/l is going up and down all the time. Please let me know if you have any advice. Thanks. I appreciate the guidance. __________________ Celebpimp |
whymewhynow, try turning the Win XP firewall off, then going to LW and doing the Bug Report again. orlinks, what do you mean? That with one file you get slow speeds while with another you get faster speeds or that while downloading a file the speeds go up and down? |
thanks, Murasame! Download speed question: nice post, good info! Tied up a couple of loose ends for me, e.g. max number of downloads could concievably be reached on one file! I'm tweaking. question - I think it was asked in another post, but didn't see a reply: When I was using Kazaa, on a good night I was achieving download speeds of up to 170kB/s, yet my download speed slider in Limewire maxes out at about 43 just before unlimited. Same if I move my setting from DSL to T1. Any way to change that? |
I don't think so. Just put it to Unlimited. |
