*extreme noob* i understand everything you said but i dont know how to check my connection speed. |
Do a speed test here (scroll down the page for one in Oz) http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?more=1 |
|
thanks hay thanks for the tip |
I have read alot of the posts in this thread.I want to know if my settings are correct.I use Adelphia high speed.I have up to 4mb connection Upload = 384kbs Download =4000kbs Upload setting is 40kps Download is unlimited Download and upload slots are all set to one I have moved the upload slider up and down with mixed results.Currently I am downloading 1 file at 182kbs,but it will dip to 150kps. Wait a minute!!I just checked in at 282kps.I know this depends on the users I connect with, but this was accomplished by lowering my upload speed to from 40kps to 33 kps. OMG it went from 282 up to 342 on this current file.I think setting your download to 1 is the best. You can make adjustments from that point. Final max speed on a 700mb file = 362kps + or - 10kbs in dips. I just tried another file.I am downloading at 157kps.I am using the same settings.I guess it's the luck of the draw......... |
384kbps = 48KB/s your max should be set around 40KB/s 4000kbps = 500KB/s so DL should be unlimited You are set up properly and yes it is the luck of the draw. I would allow 4 to connect and upload at a time. |

Adjustment to Download share Upload share (Basic, and slots) Files that I share(music, image ect..) T3 setting-increased my host from 10 to 14 Download setting 2 files at a time.I average 150kps on each of these files,on any given file.Almost.This is based on the number of host that share that file. So,If 10 or more host have that file,I'm getting great Dl speeds. |
You need to be careful running T3 settings and make sure you are not overloading your UL capability. If you use to much UL bandwidth it will hurt your DL capabilities. |

I am going to do a speed test at various times to get more accurate readings.I put my download speed to a T1 connection so I can match my upload speed of 40KB/s. |
I do not think I have my settings tweaked for max performance. I'm talking about ULing speeds & DLing speeds. What should my max # DL and max # Searches be? ULing slots and # of UL per slot? Things of that nature. I did a speed test on speakeasy.net and I did the one for ATL, bcuz that's where I live, and my results were DL - 6369kbps (795.9KBps), UL - 424kbps (53KBps). I was told by a friend that a T1 connection is 3.0MBps and clearly I have more than that, so should I use a T3 setting? Any help will be greatly appreciated and welcomed! |
I need help too Just like the last guy, i dont think my settings are correct either. I want to get max. downloads. I ran a speed test in Pa and here are my speeds download: 1.12 mbps upload: 356kbps any help on settings will do great. thanks |
Hey i need help, iv read your walkthrough on how 2 optimise but i just dont get it. iv tryed to do wot it said but im getting poor results. Iv got 8meg broad band (well 8.3) and im only downloading at 1-2kBs Wot settings do u suggest i put? |
OK, here's one for you. minus all the rhetoric & Tech vs. blah blah variables. OK, Thai just saved us 10 posts back and forth. These are GOOD averages pinging LW & PC Pit stop @ 1 and 1.5 'bytes'/ms round trip respectively. I also tested my download speed @ PC Pit stop with a good average download speed: 4519 kilobits per second or 3354 kilobytes downloaded in 5.938 seconds OK, now. I don't know if this is what everybody else is talking about when they say that LW is slow for them and bare in mind that I have gone over many of the "optimizing" suggestions from around the site including virus considerations. In comparing then and now with time and that little virus that has been going around LW in between being the only variables that "I" can think of. I can search fine and my LW bandwidth meter connects to turbo OK with 5 ultra peers. This is where it all derails: Ultra peers tend to be unstable (holding on to them);4 star search items of 100mb with up to say 80-90 hosts @T3 or better either just hang on 'connecting....' or 'waiting count down...' only to crap out with that silly 'awaiting sources' come back. Now I know that LW would like to explain this away as the cute little eccentricities of p2p networking but that's crap. As soon as 3 weeks ago I would only have to pick one of those out of the multitudes and I would have it downloaded in no time @ 6-10 KB/s, /host. On average. Of course some times I would just blow that away and have 10-12 of those done in an hour, easy. Now, I know your wondering....? I'll search and find whatever I want with nice prime results. Lets say, 10 files; @50megs; with 100 sources 'each'; with 4 Star T3 connections, yadda yadda. I may get one of those in one day. That's as apposed before with 20 times the data or more in one hour. Now from what I've seen around the site, it's hard to pick out what each person is calling slow but it appears that a lack of search results is congruent with their speed issuse. Mine is not. I have taken the time and had a look from thread to thread as well as looking elswhere prior to posting this issue with no luck. I know that somebody is going to say, 'did you remember to put the on switch to the off possition?' and I will feel shame. Right now shame is a small price. |
The gnutella network is very dynamic. Hosts are continually logging on and off. So a file you can find this minute might not be there the next. Also the network is being continually flooded with fake files which include the viruses. Quote:
I hope this helps answer you question. Unless your not asking a question, but just making an observation. I'm not quite sure:confused:. |
Quote:
The search item may have 4 stars, it may have heaps of hosts (Danger, Will Robinson!!!!) but if it hangs on connecting then needs more sources, counts down, doesn't find them...sounds like fakes to me. And being able to download a file one week successfully, then being unable to download a file the next week is typical of this problem. As time goes by, the network is flooded with more of this crap. The golden rule these days is to stay away from the files with lots & lots of hosts. The links that 6_pac left have good info & tips to help. |
My download speed is ok for the most part, but my upload speed is really bad. Like 1 - 5 KB/s and they NEVER finish to 100% complete, it always says "Transfer Interupted". I did a download speed test and my upload rate is 465 kbps (58.1 KB/s). So I set my upload speed in LimeWire to unlimited and put slots to 4 and people connecting to 4. What gives? |
Check,...check,check aaaaaand.....Check. I'm thinking outside the box. Quote:

:bangh:    Ok, I feel moderately better. You see, I've been trying to reply here for 2 f#$%^&ing days but in both cases for some f#$%^&ed up reason here the text field resets and I loose everything. I'm the type that really needs a spell checker as I dislike typing almost as much as being forced to use an MS based system. Tell me MAC users...it really is better on that side isn't it? I guess what I didn't get across was that prior to broaching this here I opted to use my eyes and not my mouth as a first reaction to my woes. That said I know why I got cookie cutter responses. Again due to curiosity and guile exceeding my actual knowledge, and then of course self imposed frustration, ahhhh, I digress... What about JAVA issues? Virtual Memory? System Cache? Potential Memory leak within the LW App.? No one ever touches on elements outside of LW. Another thing, ever since I re installed LW (Like 6 times now) it can take the installation but it can't hold on to the installation. Getting "Limewire is having an internal Problem" and then hangs. When I restart the app. I have to go over some all of my pre sets. This sucks. And are there really so few so called "ULTRAPEERS" Out there? that I can't maintain 5 or 4 or even 3???!!! |

And check Fixes for Limewire |

So what!? Your question(s) are vague. Do you want to spell it out? Check thru the LW beta archives section. ;) Answers are not easy because different systems behave differently, amount of incomplete or shared files makes a major difference. Version of Java, etc. |
I really wasn't trying to offend.........peace. |
Hi guys! I ran a test on my internet speed and it's 333 kilobits per second. However, at most LimeWire downloads at 30 KB/s. I think I've done everything in this post but nothing seems to have happened. I'm running XP - can anyone help? |
heebie, LimeWire shows speeds in kilobytes, not kilobits. 8 bits = 1 byte, so 333 kilobits(Kbs) = 41.6 kilobytes(KB/s). Some of your speed is used for overhead(sending bits of information needed to recieve the file). So the speed of 30 KB/s is pretty close to what you should be getting. For more info, just google "bits and bytes". Edit: A couple thing you can do to help improve your speeds a little. In LW go to Tools>Options>Speed, and disable ultrapeer capabilities, then go to Tools>Options>Uploads>Basic, and tick beside auto clear completed uploads, and run LW minimized in the system tray. These settings may improve your speeds a little. Be sure to click apply after making changes. |
Hi, please if you could help.. Hi guys, I kinda got to this thread while trying to find an answer to my downloading problems. Apparently, this dude has the same problems as me. I used to download up to 90kbps, but usually bordered around 30-40kbps with 8 host(my max). For the past month or two, this speed has reduced dramatically, ranging from 0(most of the time), to 3 or 4kbps. As such, a download for a 5mb file which used to take me less than a minute, now takes me almost 40 mins. There has been no changes to my ISP, nor my subscription plan, and I believe they're advertising surfing speeds of up to 12MBPS(http://www.starhub.com/online/maxonl...riceplan.html). If you do visit their site, i'm on the Premium plan). "MaxOnline Premium at a monthly fee of $79.80 (w/GST) per month Offering you download speeds of up to 12Mbps (12,000Kbps) and upload speeds of up to 384Kbps." I really don't believe it to be a problem with my isp(unless of course they fiddled with the p2p speeds as mentioned earlier in this thread), neither have I made any drastic changes to my desktop setup(i'm on OSX btw). Please, can someone help me??? |
Sounds like Starhub are throttling p2p (ISPs don't always tell their customers the truth;)). http://wiki.filesharingweb.de/index....hrottling_ISPs http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...hlight=starhub http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=88771 |
Hi, Im kinda having problems with d/l speeds with Limewire and did a search on google and this thread came up so i read through most post and tried the suggestions but to no avail :( i noticed there wasnt much on people on a network but i am could this be why im getting low d/l speeds. I did a speed test, and it showed i have a 4.72Mbps d/l and 386kbps upload speed and yet when i attempt to download something be it a song or video im getting 0-5kbps which cant be right can it? Some stuff they may help about my pc OS- Windows XP home edition Firewall/Antivirus - Norton 2006 2gig RAM 136gig Free space Im using the basic version, im not to great on all the technical aspects so if anyone is able to help but needs more info i will try to get it, all the tests in the thread have been ok like the port not being blocked or the firewall stopping the connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) |
Download a file (any one will do) from here & see what speeds you get http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml Can you answer these questions please (sorry for any repeats of what you've already given but it's great for us to have all the details together;)) System details - help us to help you |
Every time I download a song, I get a message "file is corrupted. Do you want to proceed?" How do I avoid this because each song only play the first 8 seconds. |
I keep getting "file is corrupted" after every download. How do I stop this and get a good download? |
If your using the LW player, try using a different player( VLC media player is a good one). LW's player tends to skip, pop, crack, ect. Otherwise they're probably spam/fake files. Have a look through this thread for tips on finding music: How to find music |
ideas for super-newbies & info for limewire gurus hi there, please note, i am very new to limewire, but i just wanted to share my experience on this stuff, which led to me reading all 19 pages worth of posts yesterday, only to find today that perhaps i never had a problem after all. i thought i did yesterday because, when trying to download a 350MB avi file, i was stuck at speeds of 0-5KB/s, and this is with a theoretical download speed of around 160KB/s, according to speed tests. some background for the gurus: i am running mac osx.4.8 and didnt have the firewall switched on, yet limewire was still displaying the brick wall, and in the bug report, "Received incoming this session" said false - which apparently indicates there is some firewall problem. as well as making the config changes suggested by murasame, i tried various things recommended on gnutella forums, such as adding gnutella/limewire to the list of things to allow in my network sharing settings, and setting up NAT-PMP with the airport admin utility as advised here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=52014 but this didnt seem to make any difference to the firewall stuff. i stopped short of taking up the advice to set up manual port forwarding, as it looked like a really complex process, involving (from my understanding) setting up static ip addresses for all computers in the house using the same base station... i didnt want to get into all that, with my very limited IT knowledge. ANYWAY, to finally get to the point, this morning i tried downloading a few different files at the same time, to see what speeds i could get. amazingly, i found i could get up to around 170KB/s. this was the total download speed of about 5 files simultaneously downloading, some quite fast (ie over 70KB) and others still really slow (ie 3KB). it turned out it wasnt the file type that determined the speed as i had thought (having got up to 100KB with a popular mp3 file) - rather it seemed to be the number of hosts. even a simple mp3 could go very slow when downloading from only 1 host. whereas when i had 7 or 8 hosts, i could get up to 100KB for the avi file - if i paused some other downloads to allow maximum bandwidth for that file. now this will all be very obvious to many people who've been following this thread, but i just thought it worth putting this info down for anyone like me, who hadnt tried downloading many things, and so perhaps hadnt worked out that the number of hosts may be a big factor determining download speed, rather than a problem with your isp, connection speed, or even limewire configuration. another thing that occurred to me that may affect download speed for VERY new limewire users, is that if you are only sharing your limewire folder (and therefore, the files that you have downloaded), then to start with, you may have so few files that it is cutting out the number of potential hosts quite significantly (depending on their settings). itd be interesting to see whether chucking a few extra files over into your shared folder would help with this. anyway, i am - like many others - deeply appreciative to all those more seasoned limewire users who have so patiently replied to all the questions posted here - in many cases, repetitively. i have learned a great deal by reading this entire thread (and those referenced here), and am hoping that my limewire downloading experiences will run a bit smoother from now on. |
okay i got everything about the uploads and changed the max bandwidth accordingly. But i am still downloading at a rate no more than 10 KBps, and when it reaches 10 it immediately goes right back down to about 3-5 KBps. I have a cable connection at around 700 KBps and an upload rate of about 45 KBps, why am i still downloading so slowly? My buddy has the same connection through the same company and downloads file (videos especially) at speeds ranging from the 20s to the 60s. |
Can you supply these details please.... System details - help us to help you You can start a new thread if you want and title it system details, I'll now to look for it...This thread is so long already lol... |
my new thread is on the DL/UL problems page |
my download speed is 926 kb/s and my upload speed is 119 kb/s according to www.speedtest.net so what should my settings be??? |
Those speeds are in kilobits, LW shows speeds in kilobytes. So you have 115KB d/load speed and 15KB upload. In LW go to Tools>Options>Downloads and set the slider to 100%, click apply. That way you can d/load at your at your max. Then go to Tools>Options>Uploads, and set the slider about 5KB's slower than your max upload speed. So set yours to 9-10KB, click apply. You may need to adjust those settings if your computer is slowed down too much. You should experiment to find the best setting for you. Read the first post in this thread, it covers how to setup LW. |
hi my isp is telling me my speeds are Your downstream bandwidth, is 6500Kbps. Your upstream bandwidth is set to 440Kbps. what should i set lime wire to pls? many thanks |
@ speedfreak, You should do a couple speed tests to get what your auctual speeds are. I set my d/load bandwidth to max and set my upload to between 5-10 less than the max. To get kilobytes(KB's), divide kilobits(kb's) by 8. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ |
i did the speed test and it said my download speed was 3763 kb/s and my uploads was 708 kb/s. im just confused as to what to set my upload/download speeds at. should i put it on the maximum as the maximum is only about 50 kb/s. also is that download consider fast. |
Speeds on LW are shown in kilobytes which are larger than kilobits. So a d/load speed of 3763kbs = 470KBs and u/load of 708kbs = 88KBs. I have my d/load speed set at max. For the upload speed you should cut it back some. I have mine set 10KBs slower than the max. You need to save some bandwidth for overhead. You'll need to eperiment a little with the settings if you plan to do other things while your using LW or it could slow your computer down too much. Your speeds are quite fast probably better than most :). |
Very helpfull thread folks, thanks to all the contributors. One question. If I was to do a search for say just the year and get some results and then begin down loading one, will it find less hosts/DL slower, than if I did a direct search. Just wondering because someone told me this was so. One more question. What is T1 and T3, and what happened to T2, was he not invited to play any of these reindeer games? |
I use NetZero DSL. I did a broadband speed test on the net and found I get 79 kbps (9.88 KBps) download speed, and 33 kbps (4.13 KBps) upload speed. This from DSL. I've also got ActiveSpeed to boost my speed (although I cant see the results when i'm downloading) and I see the brick wall over the planet on LimeWire to show a firewall (not sure if it's Window's or Norton Internet Security). I've checked "exception" for the Window's firewall and checked "allow" for the Norton. The irony is, when I first purchased NetZero DSL my download speed (on LimeWire) got up over 25 KBps but since then it's gone down and I can't figure out why. Anything in the MB range will take me anywhere from half-a-day to a day-and-a-half to download. I copied the advise from the initial post on this thread and attempted to apply that advise but my download speed hasn't changed. Others are having success and I'd like to be among them. Any suggestions? |
I would contact your ISP and ask them why you are getting those speeds, check to see what plan you are on and what your monthly allowance is.. |
Quote:
All of this would be telling if I hadn't, initially, gotten faster LimeWire download time with the same server. This stuff can get complicated. |
I don't think I would except that...Because when you did a linespeed test it's not testing your limewire download speed, it's testing your overall speed and your ISP is responsible for that... I would ring them back and strongly ;) suggest that they supply the speed you are paying for in your contract or offer you a discount or let you out of your contract so you can go with an ISP that will deliver what you pay for... Stand up to them...:D |
Quote:
Looking into going with another ISP but don't want to fall for some hype promotion and wind up with the same slow downloads. |
Good on you at least you got something... If you do decide to go with another ISP make sure you do some research, there are so many that shape p2p so bad to the point you can't even get a connection... http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-limewire.html |
Great information! Can you also help me with an error message that I am recieving? Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network. Nothing ever happens after that. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. |
i have used limewire for years with really good success... usually i bought the pro package. but it was also about four years ago. im finding now that is so much less availability of anything i look for... my hunch is the torrent is taking over. actual question: im having no trouble downloading all day... but no uploads at all. i even downloaded to share a lot of popular stuff just so people will upload. is it my settings or the router? thanks for your tkaing te time t read |
maybe this is off topic, anyway.. hey guys! I am using LW 4.12.11 PRO, and there is 4.14.8 available now.. what would you people suggest, i use my old version or download the newest FREE version and use it? (cause i cant buy the pro version anytime soon :D) help would be greatly appreciated.. :Smilywais: |
