Try VLC found at http://www.videolan.org/ (it's free.) The problem with WMP is that you may need xtra codecs to play some media. I don't know the app you're using but VLC will play most things (dvd, vcd, divx, etc.) Highlight one of these movie files you're refering to, go to File/Properties & press the Change button & select the app you want this type of file to be automatically opened with in the future.
Hope this solves your problem.

Actually you could have put all your question threads into this one thread. As mentioned, unfortunately with WMP you may need to obtain xtra codecs to play all the various types of video & audio. Codecs for Windows Media Player for movies can be found at http://nimo.titanesk.com And Windows Media Player 9: k-lite codec pack: http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/ Also GSpot (it's free) will tell you what you need to play a certain file.. just open the file in GSpot and it will tell you. Found at http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
As far as any of the other formats that you might have difficulty with (if WMP & VLC can't play them), AVI Players: http://www.itzalist.com/com/avi-player-download.html Hope this answers all your questions.

I have WMP10 and got it to play .avi by getting the DivX 5.XX player and codecs (and then deleted the DivX player which is a piece of crud).

Never said it did, BUT with DivX in place WMP 10 WILL play .avi without it it won't.
