Could someone please explain Locale Preferencing (shows up in option>advanced>preferencing) for me?

I believe that it looks for other hosts based on language and also possibly proximity to my current locatoin, but I've honestly not found much about Locale Preferencing. After doing a search on these forums, there were only a few threads that mentioned Locale Preferencing at all, and none of them really explained what it is very clearly nor whether setting higher, lower, or turning if off completely is a good/bad thing.

Right now my Locale Preferencing is set to 3 (the default value) and I'm wondering whether I could set it higher, lower, or even turn it off and get better upload/download speed and/or better searches.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Likewise I don't have a great understanding of this issue (so why am I answering?) As you said, it helps you to be connected related to language & culture, & locally. But I think one of its main purposes is to allow you to connect quickly.

Obviously people of the same lang & cult will offer similar files for sharing. I believe it's based on your OS java lang settings.

Likewise I did a search of the forum & only found partial references to this topic. Some you might have missed I will list here. I read that it's not good to list the Locale Preferencing too high. And in certain circumstances setting it to zero for finding rare files or for connection problems might pay off on certain occasions. I have left the red highlights in for ease of finding these short references: #1, & #2 , & #3 , & #4 , & #5 , & #6

I appreciate the links, but those were the threads I had already read through and didn't really learn a whole lot.

Here's to hoping that someone in the know will come along and explain Locale Preferencing a little better.

Well since no one seems to have any hard data on what locale preferencing is all about, or where to learn about it, I decided to experiment.

I changed my Locale Preferencing from 3 to 5, and it sure made a difference. Everyime I turn Limewire on now I am set up as an Ultrapeer, and my downloads, uploads, and searches have improved.

Now I'm wondering how high I can put this setting.......
