VIRUSes

HI I found out why i can't burn CDs- because my computer is riddled with disease.

It has so many viruses it needs to be completely rebuilt.

Apparently, the music industry deliberately infects lime and kazaa with viruses.
The computer technician has told me it is not worthwhile to keep using lime or kazaa because the computer will continue to be ruined from the viruses.

What do you guys say about this? is it pointless to keep using Lime. Or can you guys tell me how i can use it without constantly breaking my machine? I love this , what can i do

You're obviously using windows right? I'm surprised you haven't properly safeguarded yourself. That includes anti-virus apps to scan all incoming files, possibly a firewall (in fact after this it might be wise!), & spyware checkers. Here's some suggestions: Try using:
-ad-ware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
-Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
-Spy Sweeper http://www.webroot.com/wb/downloads/index.php And a decent anti-virus software. There's lots around & even some are free. Some of the win people may suggest some others.

Which OS version are you using?

I use a mac, but I've been 'too scared' to connect to the net for my win2k that I can run using virtual pc on my mac. That'd mean loading the win system up with safeguards & detectors. It's a fact of life nowadays to protect yourself when accessing the net on windows. Be it p2p or just visiting a site or email attachments etc.

helo

firewall: zone alarm,
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...ku_list_za.jsp
they'll let you have the trial for pro if you want but that's 15 days than it doesn't work and you got to get the free (email me if you want to renew the trial)
don't forget to configure it properly! so it lets limewire through

Brand new Computer future

I had adaware and spybot- they worked ok though i still ended up with tons of ware on my computer

I had Norton but I found the instructions complicated and i couldnt get it to work right. It found at risk files but wouldnt delete them when I told it to.

Yes I use windows. though i dont want to i hate the idea of being "monitered" though thats probably paranoia

What does windows do anyway?

What is an OS?
I'm getting everything new- (except my computer which is a dell)

So please tell me everything, including the "OS" and replacement for Windows that I should get to keep under the radar, and hard to acess by ad/ spyware
and viruses

thanks

My computer helper says that all "antivirus",like norton, cant keep me safe on Lime because "antivirus" just warn you not to download sick files

Since on lime I allready have downloded the file, it cant help me.

Can you explain how antivirus will keep me safe on Lime

if you already have a virus, you have to get rid of it first...
Unless I'm mistaken, Norton av should be on a startup disk. So you can run that before you install it.

Also, be aware that getting virii form LW, heck any P2P application out there, can be prevented by a little prudence. What you dld matters. Learn to avoid (if you can) stuff like .exe and .zip files and it is best to first scan (with an antivirus) any of these type of files before opening them if your antivirus software doesn't have an auto-protect feature.

Also, I think that your helper is wrong. As far as I'm concerned, I've encountered only one virus through LW (and one might say that I was sort of trying hard to get one) and Norton didn't eliminate it, but put the file in Quarantine and eliminated it later. No prob.

Know also that you can't get virus from music and video files.

That's very, very wrong. First of all, it can prevent you from virii if you have the latest definitions. Besides, if you happen to have a virus, it can detect and clean the infected files.
