Default movie playback problems

Hi Guys, You were really helpful last week I followed all your advice for d/l movies and playback - however I now have a new problem still assoaciated with the old one - I still cannot playback some movies.... the error message I was getting was WMP encountered an unexpected problem, now the message is codecs required could not be found COOD109B, I have downloaded media played 10 and the relevant codecs but still have the problem!!!!
Do you have any further advice?

What OS are you using? XP? OS X?
In either case, try VLC. It can playing many file formats and it's possible that it will play more stuff than WMP can (without telling Mr Bill what you are doing).

Nimo¥s codec pack should help: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html OR Windows Media Player 9: k-lite codec pack (as Peerless suggested) & also Get GSpot.. it's free and it will tell you what you need to play a certain file What types of file can't you play?

The 2 particular files are both .avi - however I have d/l'd other .avi files which I can watch, eg (names of films etc are purely fictional of course!) Lets say I had Shreak and Kill Me and The Twiinies(not a full legnth film just 20 mins long) all .avi, I can watch the Twiinies no problem but the others just throw up these error messages each time media player launches (COOD109B or codecs required could not be found.) I have downloaded everyhting you guys have suggested, just about to try the last 2 from Lord of the Rings, but another question first - Are all these things I have already downloaded compatable with each other, should I be uninstalling any of them first?
Thanks

Since I'm a mac person, on mac codecs in most cases are included within the app. So there's no bare/empty-shell like wmp that needs codecs to be dwnlded to play what most people will watch. As for what's compatible with what, I don't know. I'd suggest that there should be some form of documentation at the site or with the dwnlded iles that explains what apps the are compatible with. Not everybody likes to read the 'Read Me first' text files.

avi format in its crude form can be a fairly large file & is roughly equivalent to mpeg1 (xcuse the xtremely rough comparison), however avi is like a shell & can include special encoding within it such as divx (search divx on the net/google divx.) Divx is a translation of mpeg4 which is principleee superior to mpeg 1/2.

If these codecs are anything like the QT codecs for mac, then they will apply to all apps that can utilise these types of codecs for video (system wide.) For mac that'd mean anything that can utilise QT movie formats.

The file sizes are 62,468 (just realised that is a small file for a big film!) 699,887 and 87,160 respectivley.

Full movies would range around the 700Meg mark, so the second file should be ok.
The other two sound a little small for full movies. They could be parts of a full movie or sumthin'.
Try dlding another version of the two films and, while dlding is in progress, pressing Launch (one file at a time, ok?). If the files are playable by your default player, then the preview will open in it. If they aren't, try changing your default player to another and again pressing Launch, until you find a suitable player, or until another comes up with a less frustrating alternative...

Goodos luckos
