Angry infections just waiting out there

I didn't see a forum heading for this so I'm putting it here. I tried to dl 3 program (Read the rules about wares ) keys, and Norton informed me that it had done away with 2 W32.Beagle.AR@mm (mass mailing worms) and a trojan (W32.IRCBot). Most likely the repeat infection was passed around here as the file was shared because it was the same infection from 2 downloads of the same program from different sources.

I am also happy to report that Limewire also picked up all 3, splashing a "file corrupted" message!

So, update your virus definitions, and please don't pass around infected programs!

Thats basically your own damn fault. Downloading appz and warez is like playing chatch with a gernade. My thoughts...

Well, to quote from your very own quote: "THEY WHO WOULD GIVE UP AN ESSENTIAL LIBERTY FOR TEMPORARY SECURITY, DESERVE NITHER LIBERTY OR SECURITY."

If I should be able to dl an mp3, wma, avi, etc, then I should be able to dl an exe or a zip, especially as I offer the same (without malware). Any file can be corrupted. True, some are easier than others, but that's yet another reason to have pgms like an antivirus, Ad Aware, a firewall, peer guardian, etc.). As for grenades, when you look back, shouldn't most of the memorable situations you've attended been rated with a grenade or 2?

Wow, nice work reviving a thread that's more than a year old. Clearly there is no way to know exactly what you are downloading. Even with AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot, or any other program like that, you are still at risk. YOU choose what to download and run, not LimeWire. Likewise, LimeWire has absolutely no control over what is shared over the Gnutella network. As for grenades...........it seems I spelled it wrong the first time.... Please let old threads die.

In my original ancient post (sorry about the ancient thread revival. I was looking for something else, this turned up in a search, & I didn't notice the year. If old posts are supposed to be noninteractive, perhaps they should be closed?), there was no criticism of limewire. In fact there was praise for having caught corrupt downloads.

I do not think there's a way to find out if a file is infected before downloading, although it would be nice if Limewire included with their next update, some kind of way to warn us or scan the file before downloading or letting us open it. The only thing I can say is never open any files that is small than 1,0000 KB or 1MB.

Most of the time you can tell that the file is infected by looking at the filesize. This Sticky will tell you what to look out for.
