I've run into a lot of video files that are not what they say they are. When you open them up they require a "license" to play. I think they download other files onto your computer like "stop popups", etc. When you are allowed to play the file it is not what it says it is. Should I take a chance with Limewire and get DSL (I have 56K)? Anyone else have this problem?

It's common knowledge here that a lot of the files shared on the Gnutella network are not what the title claims it to be. As for DSL, if it were me, I would get it in a heartbeat. The best solution to your problem would be to either keep trying to find a file that will play or buy the movie. (What do you mean when you say "license"? If it is like a serial number you might be able to find a keygen to play the file.)

Normally it's WMV files that want special licencing & try to connect you to the net when you open them. There's better alternatives such as avi, mpeg, etc. Also make sure the file is a decent size if it's a movie. A genuine movie will be cd size (500-700 MB.)

Yup, as LOTR says, you must learn to filter by yourself some results.
Also, wmv are a poor excuse of a file format with less than bad quality (plus the trying-to-connect-to-the-net thing...). Avi are probably the most common format you'll get, then mpeg.
