![]() Anyone know the ins and outs of university networks? My LW is running slightly strangely, connecting to the network but downloading very erratically. I know the university network blocks out p2p networks, I'm not sure if this only applies to computer labs - Mine is working from my room, I'm connected to the ethernet. If anyone has inside knowledge of any university networks do tell!! |

![]() I don't think it's a problem with traffic - most students are able to download using Ares software on an XP or 2000 machine from their rooms without bother. Which does leave your suggestion that the 6346 port is blocked and the one that Ares uses isn't. I'm not sure the administrators would take too kindly to me asking for the port to be unblocked though!! |

![]() Ok, just had an email round from the network administrators - trap jaw is right, they've cottoned onto the fact that people are using ares now too. They've blocked the ares, gnutella and Bit Torrent networks and are going to suspend those that use them. I actually see that tracking a student's personal connection is an invasion of privacy but anyway. Any networks that the university won't pick up? I know of DC++ working, but there isn't a mac version for it because no-one can be arsed to develop one. Help! |

![]() There is one! But it hasn't been updated in 2-3 years so ... I haven't been brave enough to try it yet! lol ![]() ![]() http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/984992057/2 About Universities well they use various techniques to block p2p. Be it ports, or particular apps or authorising only particular apps to run on the network, or filters. Also see this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...700#post114700 Having a talk to the network techs about this & allowing just your ip access, etc. might work.
