Need Help using codecs (VideoLan)

I had trouble playing dvd files that I have downloaded. I was advised to download videolan as an alternative to using my windows media player. My question is: How do I send a limewire download to videolan? I have worked on this for days and am yet to figure it out. Obviosly, I can't open limewire with videolan, so how do I get limewire to videolan?
