video preview

I know I have seen somewhere about using of players to preview
downloads while in progress (avi) apprarently WMP won't. Whats a good player that will allow me to do that and also since you can't drag the file how do you get it to the player you want to use

VLC has in-built codecs & divX also plays avi files. For links see: VLC media player - Overview (choose nearest mirror site) OR

Class not registered/Codecs - Gnutella Forums

To make an application default for particular type of file, select it (outside of LW), go to menu File>Properties>Change Open with ... & choose the program (eg: VLC) & choose always open with. Press OK, Apply & OK.

In the example below my system thought all my video files were WinAmp. Doh! :D

I've decided to offer another option similar to above. By the way I believe the technique might be a little different for XP.

If you're talking about the people in this forum then almost no one is affiliated with LW.

Any problems with icons & their default apps despite making changes like above then see:

but i have macintosh (an imac computer) so i dont have a menu and i went to file and couldn't find properties what do i do.

For a start you should probably be posting in the General mac or OSX section. This post is very obviously only concerned with windows. I have posted similar answers for mac os9 & osx! More than once. So do a search of the forums or search thru those sections, & if you can't find such an answer then create a new thread in those sections suggested.

mp3 player

quintessential is a great mp3 player. beats real n winamp bigtime. windows media player is not worth comparing to, it sux. quintessential plays lot of other formats as well, may require plug-ins occasionally [reqd plugin for mp4 files]. it also plays video usin divx, but like lotr said, VLC is the best for video.

I have windows 98 and it doesn't have the "change" button in properties. Is there another way to change it?

how do you get the files out of limewire

Lord of the Rings April 18th, 2006 05:09 AM

For fast & easy access, go to your LW Library window, select Saved Files folder & press the Explore button. Sample image here: Using Library Explore button to access downld folder (click on link) & the folder will open up for you.

what about a windows xp because i can't find where us saying

Lord of the Rings January 21st, 2007 03:20 PM

Same thing. Hover your cursor over the Saved Files listing in the LW Library & it will show where your files are downloaded to. Also you can check by going to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Saving. By default, on windows xp the download folder is C:\Documents and Settings\"your account name"\Shared unless you set it for somewhere else.

right click the file and click on view on disk and that takes you to it

Back in 2007 they were using LW 4, so there was no right click > locate on disk option ;)
LW 4 users could find the file by following LOTR's advice in posts #16 & #19.

Lord of the Rings March 24th, 2009 06:59 PM

For LW 5, Previewing files still creates Preview files in the incomplete folder. So as before, one work around is to open directly from the incomplete folder. Right-click on the incomplete file in Downloads window, choose Find File Info..., from information window choose Locate on Disk. When the incomplete folder opens, open the file from there. This will prevent Preview files being created which may take up a lot of extra space on your computer if they are all left in there. This obviously means a couple extra steps than LW 4.

For LW 4, simply click on incomplete folder listing at bottom of Library window, find the file in question & select it, press Launch button.

For examples of both LW 4 & 5, see Launching incomplete files without creating Preview files
