does windows media player play avi files? and if not what programs do you recommend to play them?

It might if you d/l the right codecs, but VLC seems to be a popular player. I use it and it works well for me. Get it at: (choose nearest mirror site).www.videolan.org/vlc/ If you want to burn videos to dvd, then get either the latest version of nero or roxio.
