The small files are either: viruses/trojans/worms. Do not download these. If you browse through the forum sticky notes you will see this has been discussed.

get yourself a AV and turn it on while downloading from Gnutella. Software files are extremely large, NOT small. What you are seeing is a trojan generator that will generate trojans under the names of popular files.
