No smiley when I chat

I´ve clicked the box which enables people to chat with me but it doesn't work properly. If I have a direct contact with my friend using his IP address we are not always able to chat. (he also has enabled the chat option). It worked a few days ago but it doesn't work all the time. Does anyone know what goes wrong?

For some reason the smiley doesn't always show up in the search results. But will instead sometimes appear if you're downlding from the other person. But why you can't chat sometimes ... ? I can only guess there's bandwidth lacking somewhere or perhaps enough available upld/downld slots. If chat doesn't work immediately. Leave it & try a little later, perhaps 10-20 mins. And try multiple times but leave at least a minute inbetween each time. Sometimes chat window can be slow to appear. And sometimes it is hidden behind the LW program. lol At least that's what I've noticed.
AFAIK The chat function on LW hasn't been updated for quite a long time. It was a donated piece of programming to LW, not by the LW programmers themselves.
