Default newbie question re .avi files

I downloaded part 1 and 2 of a movie and to start I thought it was odd that part one is an .avi file and part to is an mpg. But what I really can't figure out is how to play these - using windows media player i get an error that the player either doesn't support this file type or does not support the codec which was used to compress the file.

i confirmed that WMP is setup to autoupdate codec and i tried playing both of these files using different software out there...should I just assume that these 2 files are corrupt or am i doing something wrong?

It sounds like your missing the right codecs to play the files. Also it's odd that one part would be avi and the other mpg. Chances are that you downloaded two parts of a file that didn't go together and also a lot of movie files are either fake or corrupt.

You could try playing the files in a different media player. VLC media player is a good one with the codecs built in and will play most any file.

XP Codec Pack 1.3.0 is a good codec pack for windows media player. Be sure to install it after you d/l it.

i had pretty much the same problem only not two different type of files for part 1 and part 2. i was using my window media player to try to watch the movie but it gave me the same response. i went back to the library and clicked on explore then right clicked the saved movie and opened with realplayer. it said i need to download some free stuff to be able to view my file, it helped me step by step and in a couple of minutes i was able to watch the movie no problem. my window media player still will not play those certain movies but my realplayer does and it didn't cost me anything.
