So I download the 1.8 version of LimeWire, notice the ad banner at the bottom, and think - that's fine they gotta make their money somehow. First it was just some normal ad.

Then I do a little searching, nothing in particular, and a big PlayBoy ad shows up on the screen!

I don't get it - how could a good program go bad so quickly? Search preformance doesn't seem to have improved much either.

Time to switch file sharing apps (again). At least Morpheus, Audiogalaxy or any other app doesn't through porn ads at me.

I don't think they have control over the content of the ads.

correct me if i'm wrong here, but since limewire is open source.. isn't it horribly easy to just recompile a version of limewire 1.8 without ads and distribute it on your website for others? nothing stopping anyone, and i'm sure a "ad free limewire 1.8" would get around fast.

The porn banners are extremely obnoxious. Not only that, but what ever happened to the info about how many sites are available, and the total TB figure? is that just too much information for us to handle now? or will it distract us from Playboy...?

This is disgusting. I recommend you to move to Gnotella or Gnucleus. They are still free from spyware and ads.

I never imagined that I'd not only concider those produts again, but that BearShare actually has less spyware and garbage software to screw up Windows than LimeWire does now.

The Playboy ads were chosen by our ad provider, not us. At your request, we have asked them to remove the ads from our rotation. It will take a couple days to kick in.

As for the bundled software: remember that YOU DON'T HAVE TO INSTALL IT. Obviously we hope you do, as it funds more open-source code and pays for innovation on the Gnutella network. LimeWire has probably done more for the Gnutella network than any other company since Nullsoft.

I should have been more careful in that last comment! Obviously others outside LimeWire--notably Vinnie Falco of BearShare--have contributed much to the Gnutella network since the first generation of clients. But realize that many of the of the most recent improvements to Gnutella were spearheaded by LimeWire. Take the "0.6" handshake mechanism, ping-pong caching, and XML metadata, for example. And we have many more exciting proposals that are very close to release, most notably supernodes. This helps the entire Gnutella community--not just LimeWire.

We've put a lot of money into helping Gnutella and plan on pushing the protocol forward in the future. We're hoping our users will support this.

That quote is an outright lie,you do get the option of not installing a couple of 'extras' but spyware is still installed without user knowledge.If you remove this crap from your system using Ad-Aware (Limewire advocated Ad-Aware not so long ago,probably as a cheap shot directed at Freepeers Bearshare) then Limewire ceases to function.
What's with the underhand tactics then? at least have the guts to give your users all the facts before they make the mistake of infecting THEIR system.
