Get VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) as it has its own in-built codecs & is generally very reliable. See what it can do here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

I'm most surprised VLC won't play it. If it can't play an avi file then it suggests that either the file's corrupt or there's nothing in the file.

How large is the file & what is its extension? You say avi but does it have an avi extension?

Another option is to d/l the proper codec to play the various .avi files out there. It depends on the codec used to encode the video file. I use a nice little prepackaged codec suite from
http://www.free-codecs.com/download...ck_All_in_1.htm and they all work in Windows Media Player with no problems. This package is mainly for .avi/Divx files. A nother good package is http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm that will play almost all video and audio formats. I haven't found a format I can't play now.
