What I don't understand is how some people can make running LimeWire sound so difficult! When we first installed it I had never used a P2P program before but we had gotten it to work for us without having any problems. The only time we ever had a problem with it was when it had shut down on my sister for no reason(we didn't have a virus). That only happened twice and ever since then it's been running great for us.

I wonder if they ever tried to run it with Java 1.6 beta after uninstalling all other versions of Java, & deleted their LW prefs folder also. Who knows what they tried. They didn't tell us specifically. Oh well ... there's other gnutella progs out there.

Hold on now, You guys WILL NOT be able to solve my problem. I can almost guarantee it. I tried other file sharing programs to see what happens, and they cause the DSL to crash also. So, the problem may not be Limewire. I have had very few problems with limewire, but, you see, I am troubleshooting my connection issue. If you have any suggestions, I am open to them. But, I seriously doubt you asre going to be able to help me. I happen to know a little about computers.

Sorry I'm not sure which connection devices you are using? Can you tell us which brand & model modem/routers you are using please?

Also check: MS & 3rd party patches

Who is your ISP (internet service provider)?

What happens if you try to downld a magnet link from here: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml
Describe to us what happens.

Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?

What firewalls do you have & which ones are active? Which ones (if any) did you make special allowances for in the settings to allow LW full access?

Alright, I removed limewire completely from my machine. I redownloaded it, but have not installed it yet. I tried, but when it was downloading to install, it crashed the DSL, so I haven't tried again yet. I will though.
I don't think it's a SP2 thing, because I haven't had a real serious problem with crashing until I moved to a wireless setup. Like I said, I had a cable modem when I lived in a different place, and it NEVER crashed. No connection problem at all. That's why I'm not so sure it is entirely a limewire thing, but a problem with file sharing applications in general. But, when it comes down to it, I don't know. That's why, with you're help, I hope to learn more and hopefully solve this issue.
So, when I tried to download the magnetic link thing, my browser (firefox) said the protocol was not associated with any program.
I don't think it's a firewall thing, because I've never had any issues before. But, I use Zone Alarms and Nvidia firewalls (plus my Modem hasd one built in - a Westell Versalink 327v), but I didn't have to do any special configurations.
I'm going to try and install LW again.

Just curious but what are the symptoms of the crash you are experiencing. Is LimeWire freezing on install. Are you loosing connection. Are you getting the BSOD ? etc. A detailed description might help figure this out

Downlding the magnet link whilst LW is not installed serves no purpose. Once you start the downld, LW should take over the downld.

I must say though, it looks to me like you have more than one active firewall. Almost all firewall companies recommend against doing such. The reason is it can result in inconsistent results & even result in less security than just having a single firewall because of the clashes between the firewalls. That's software for you!!!

Choose one & one only! Choose the one you feel most confident with & configure that one to allow LW total access. And disable the other software firewall.

All wireless devices have NAT firewalls. The question is whether those particular device(s) are able to utilise UPnP (universal plug & play) which allows the program to communicate directly with the device to open whichever ports are necessary for that program to operate. For LW it's usually only port 6346 for connecting though on occasions it may also like to use a different listening port for incoming requests.

From memory, Westell do not offer UPnP abilities. So if you want to solve your firewall issue, you WILL need to forward a port on your device. It's not so hard. See http://www.portforward.com/english/r...W/Limewire.htm The most important step is the 1st one of setting up a static ip which is the very 1st step. Then just set up the ports you wish to open. If you don't set up a static ip properly then the entire process won't work properly after your ip changes (ie: you still have a dynamic ip!)
