![]() Hey everyone, A few weeks ago a bunch of people on my campus got busted / sued by the RIAA for having downloaded music off limewire. One of my friends knew one of the people that got busted who settled with the RIAA for about $3,000. That guy then said that he had been busted because he had downloaded fake files that had been placed on limewire by the RIAA. So my question is, how can I tell these RIAA files apart from legitimate content so I can avoid being busted myself? Thanks! |

![]() It's well known in the US that the RIAA settle out of court all the time, and the amount is around the $3000 mark... NewsFactor Network | RIAA Music Crackdown Nets College Kids Streamcast to slug it out in court with RIAA, MPAA Addicus... The RIAA usually catch you uploading files not downloading them, what they do is trace your IP to your ISP and your ISP then gives them your information and it goes from there... ![]()

No I don’t know the exact figure... you think that makes my story less credible? You think my friend told me: "Hey did you hear James got busted for downloading off limewire! yeah he had to settle with the RIAA for like three thousand two hundred and seventy five dollars!" of course not, you just say he settled for like 3,000, which is what my friend told me, so chill. Also, what’s with the added emphasis on the "you" in: "YOU don’t know?". Why would I be more likely to know the exact number as a friend of someone who knew the person who got caught? Wouldn’t that make me even less likely to know due to the fact that im getting it as second hand information to start with? What’s your deal? To everyone else, thanks for the responses so far, I didn’t know they traced mostly through uploads. However I'm still interested to see if anyone knows anything in relation what my friend heard about the RIAA putting up fake files on limewire or tagging certain files so that once you download them or a given number of them they can trace you. Anyone know about this? Thanks! |

![]() Hi Addicus, don't mind Mick, I think he was just having a bad hair day... ![]() I know the RIAA place fake files like the ones explained in this thread http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...h-results.html Also I have heard of ones that contain a snippit of a song that just replay over and over... I'm not to sure about one's that can track you..I'll have a google when I get a chance and see what I can find... ![]()

![]() I think you will find its the people downloading/uploading Album art that they are really picking up on, People that are obviously making copy's of things that they intend on selling. For these people I have no sympathy & I believe they should be prosecuted, However, I have a record collection of about 300 albums & have paid for all of them and if I want to download every single track again with my computer, what possible crime could I be guilty of, In England they would have to prove I have never Payed in the past for this track,& thats imposable, Even if I dont have that track in my possession at present, They would have to prove I never did have this track and lost it, Had it stolen, or whatever Cos I may not have it now, Don't mean I have not in the past. So as in england, Guilt must be proved, Not Innocence proved, + In england we have legal Aid so even poor people can defend themselves. America Well!! thats another story SUE me, SUE you, SUE everyone, What crazy way to live. ![]() Peace.

![]() Hey Addicus. You go for it man, I like to here it, if I'm wrong, You say so Addicus, & I stand up for your rite to do so. ![]() As well as many fake files to sabotage & flood the network they also employ creeps we call Trolls, their sole purpose is to disrupt, confuse,& mislead the members on this forum. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm sorry for mistakenly thinking, you were one of those, like WW said, bad hair day, we all avem. If they wanted to, they could simply add a code word e.g. "sdkfnldlkas49##vlnnnkp" in the file properties/comments,section that would not show up in search view, only when you click on properties once you have the file & I believe most people never look in properties, so its possible. Are they doing this ? Well, who knows, if you want to help prove it, do a little research & I will print the results. Peace.
