first time user -- attempting to get LW running

i have installed LW4.12.6. -I AM RUNNING ON WINDOWS XP -
I BRING UP THE LW PAGE and it opens ok AND ONTO THE SEARCH WINDOW

WHEN I ENTER A SEARCH I RECEIVE MESSAGE >>>>>>>
LW IS CURRENTLY CONNECTING TO NETWORK
YOUR SEARCH MAY NOT RETURN MANY RESULTS
UNTIL YOU ARE FULLY CONNECTED TO NETWORK

WHEN I PRESS THE OK ON THIS MESSAGE THE SCREEN GOES BACK TO SEARCH WINDOW AND NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS-- JUST BLANK WINDOW.

I AM A NOVICE USER OF PC AND DESPERATELY NEED SOME HELP TO USE LW
