latest Limewire legal issues

Just read on yahoo.com this morning about A college student being sued by that RIAA for downloading 199 songs off limewire Article says more lawsuits to come. Riaa been seding emails to limewire users stating that if they dont pay the 4 to 6 rhousand dollar settlement they will be sued,Anyone else read this and what do you all think of this. its got me really nervous when i first downloaded limewire they said it was perfectly legal to download from them now I am finding out differently and I am really scared I am not stupid but according to the website it was legal at the time of course i cant find anything on the website now I have had Limewire for about 2 years now.

Where is that article? Odds are it was misreported, mistitled or both and the
person is actually being threatened for uploads, not downloads. The RIAA has
been spouting the same subtle lie for several years now and they find an
endless supply of naive reporters to slip this particular lie through into print.

This one?

Yes, a typical FUD piece. If you are not actually sharing hundreds of things
they are actually looking for, you have nothing to worry about.

…At least 500 university students nationwide have paid settlements to avoid
being sued, Engebretsen said. Students who don't take the offer face lawsuits
— and minimum damages of $750 for each copyrighted recording shared
if they lose.…

Note how the boilerplate piece hides the truth well down from the top and how
it goes on to quote RIAA that "just one song can bring a lawsuit" even though
they have never made such an attempt.

It is highly probable this reporter is just passing out another RIAA press
release without checking the facts. They pull this trick on reporters all the
time and every few months one will fall for it.

If you want to be sure those MAFIAA misfits never latch onto you, disable
sharing your downloads folder and also partial file sharing. That way, you will
never share anything that you downloaded until you choose to do so on purpose.

Sharing the download folder is controlled in Tools/Options/Sharing (remove it
from the list and uncheck "Share finished downloads") and partial file sharing is
in Tools/Options/Uploads. Do those and you're practically bulletproof because
they won't be able to see you at all.

doesn't that encourage freeloading ??? if everyone was to do it there would be no more gnutella network.
