Default Media player encountered a problem/cannot render file/ you need a freaking DOM player

Hello everyone! This is my first post in the forum! I have to say I'm exited after browsing thru some of the topics Q and A. I'm here to to learn how to make the best use of my Limewire program and meet some interesting people along the way. I've been file shareing for almost two years now and completely self tought. Unfortunately, I'm still not really any good at it! LOL! I do however manage to get some good files from time to time. I think it's funny to see all my friends going to the theatre to see new releases! Anyways, I do have some issues I'd like to address! I'm frustrated that most of the time, 1 out of like 20 files I DL is able to be played. My OS is W/XP. I use WMP11 and Classic on Limewire Pro 4.1 . I have installed the K-Lite codec packs and another codec pack(unsure wich one) and still have some trouble. Although, I just learned on another topic to check files with bitzi, wich may help. I also installed WinRar wich I have no clue how to use! Geez its way over my head! Is WMP11 better than Classic? 11 is very overbearing and seems to insinst on being my default player. Thats cool if "its" not the problem. I mean I like 11 and I'm quite used to it to be honest. Plus its such a pain in the @#$@ to go to each file and change its default to classic I hardly bother. Should I keep both players? Or DL another player on top of these? What the hell is a "Dom" player? Is this some kind of hacker selling some spam? I delete these files as soon as I see the preview. I'm very careful not to click on stuff I'm not sure about these days. Do I need more codecs? Is it my options or settings in my media players, Limewire, etc.? I'd like to be sure how to push LW to its limit! I got an email(from LW) saying my pro is going to expire soon and I should DL the LW Pro 4.16.1 for $14.50. Should I do this? Whats up with the beta version? Will my priveledges expire like they say they will? Thanks in advance!

Stay away from DomPlayer, check out Remoc's (post #4) link about in this thread
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...ec-issues.html

I've never used Media Player Classic, I don't like WMP. If you're having problems with making other players your default player, you might have to change file associations within WMP (so that it stops trying to be the default).
In WMP11 click on Library > more options > file types. Now untick all the formats that you don't want WMP to play > apply > ok.

I think that having too many codec packs can cause problems, AFAIK you're better off just sticking to one pack.

If you're still having problems, maybe you could try VLC player? It's free & has codecs installed to play most file types...if VLC won't play it then chances are the file's bad. The thread below has a link for download.

It's up to you whether you renew your Pro or not. Your privileges will expire & then you won't be entitled to email support or free updates any more. If your Pro hasn't expired yet, you still have while to decide (the renew nags usually start a few weeks before your Pro actually expires)
Are you using a Beta version now? You can go on using whatever version you have now for as long as you like. You should only renew your Pro if you think you'll want to update in the future! Providing you have your Pro installers saved, you can always reinstall an versions that you've downloaded while your Pro was current.

If your Pro hasn't actually expired yet, you can still download the latest Pro version for free if you want to update. The changelog hasn't been updated yet, so I can't tell you what's different in the latest version.

Thanks for your reply! I'll start with uninstalling one codec pack while keeping the K-lite pack, then download the VLC player. I cant find WMP Classic in any of my files to uninstall it! I wanna get rid of it. I dont think its as simple as clicking and deleting, atleast it should'nt be. I went into my cp and did'nt see it listed. I know I have it cause I use it. I tried for hours last night and finally gave up. As for WMP11, I may keep it around, just disable many of its options. What do I do with WinRar? Since I got it to read RAR files, I cant figure out what to do with it! Its unlike anything I've seen before and very complicated. Does it run automatically? Doubt that! It aslo compresses files to take up less space, but thats not something I'm familiar with either. I need to do something though. My pc runs sluggish if my library gets too full of 700 and 800mb files. Let me know if you think of anything else. I'll let you know how it goes. As for my Pro, its been good for the most part. I may upgrade or get the beta its only $14.50 for six months. Thanks!

WinRar will let you extract & create archive files...like WinZip. If you download an archive file (.zip, .rar), you can use WinRar to extract (unzip) the files onto your computer. Or, if you want to compress files into an archive to make them smaller (like if you have a file full of photos that you want to compress to send via email).

If you don't want to use WinRar, just delete it

Remember it's not Windows Media Player Classic...just Media Player Classic. It's different to WMP. If you can't find it in Add/Remove programs to delete, try using your computer's search to look for all files & folders with media player classic in the name - maybe you can delete it that way?

MPC is standalone meaning it isn't installed. It is also the best media player available for free, so you might just want to keep it. It won't interfere with anything else you have on your computer.

Also when it comes to codec packs, there are many to choose from. It is extremely important to NOT install more than a single codec pack.

I have had very good results using the Combined Community Codec Pack Combined Community Codec Pack

But again I can't stress enough that if you want to install it, make sure to uninstall all other codec for video.

note: If you use vobsub, CCCP is not recommended as these don't work well together.

note2: MPC and ZoomPlayer are included in CCCP installation, you can choose to install them or not. I usually don't install ZoomPlayer as MPC covers everything anyway in my opinion.
