I'm a bit confused, I'm sharing 3000+ files, a diverse mix of music, yet hardly anybody is uploading. Major share is itunes file, windows XPopp syst.
What am I doing wrong?

In Monitor I have seen the following message "Your client is a leaf node shielded by an ultrapeer.Hence you will see few or no searches in the monitor window"
What does that mean?

Probably a firewall or router needs to be configured. Someone who knows XP can help, but the first check you can make is to see if your LW can accept "incoming connections."

Look at Tools->Options->Bug Report and then click View Example. Scroll through the sample and look for the line which shows if you can accept incoming connections.

I am quite new as well. Have the same problem and despite sharing 2600 files no one upleads. home computer with OSX, with norton arivirus and the OSX default fire walls enabled.

Is there a way to allow uploads without catching viruses/trojan horses etc?

Yes--use OS X!

btw--there's only been 1 nasty 'virus' written for OS x so far, so even w/o a firewall or virus protection you are still pretty safe.

Anyway--see the Tip of the Day in LW for how to set the Panther's built-in setting for the gnutella port (Apple Menu->System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall->New; choose "Gnutella/Limewire (6346)".

Excuse me stief, can you provide details on what that virus is, what it does & its name. In over 10 years I've only come across 2 older mac viruses (both from fellow students) & were pre OSX OS's. (2 yrs ago & last year!) I started using Norton AV after the first one.

thanks for the tip - now uploads work. So you were saying that it is pretty safe to download and upload from LW if I use norton AV and OX with all firewalls except gnutella on. Sorry for been a bit paranoic about it but I am no expert and would not want to get introubles...

Hi guys

I've been trying to find out about malware for Macs for over a year, and have concluded it's is a really fuzzy topic--mostly rumours and FUD. Lots of people speculating on what *might* be, but in everyday use--nada.

The "first" OS X trojan turned out to be a "proof of concept" just to prove one could be written. (One of the guys involved in the original discussion gave his side of the story here). Another was discussed a month or so ago http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=07669 , but I and others couldn't find it. Probably FUD.

Still, like doing backups, practising safe surfing seems like a good idea. Our Windows friends have a lot of experience there, so it can't hurt to pay attention to what they say about firewalls and virus protection. I use Virex, but haven't found anything. Even though many still say OSX is virus free http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004...0_107_3_04.txt , I figure it's just a matter of time.

Bottom line? Try to be prepared, but looks like the chances of the hard drive failing are greater.

I found both viruses via Virex (a G3 checking a CD & a zip disk), not my G4 although the first one affected my G4 & after a month of passing the virus via 'StuffIt', my backup disks were affected somewhat. Despite being very old viruses. Glad to know the OSX viruses are at least still only on that beware of the horizon level.

By the way, about 10 months after the initial infection, one of my HDD's failed (the one that had been infected). I greatly suspect the virus influenced this result! It was the original HDD & only 18 mths old. Such a short life!

I'm surprised to see most of Norton AV's newer definitions seem to be for pc (or am I mistaken? [or perhaps for MS products]) I guess that takes in account for multi-platform networks, etc.

Steif, I'm a former Limewire user who recently managed to ressurect my connection... however, I've gone from a Wi*** 28.8k 266 comp to a AMD2400XP+ Win XP Pro with a 3Com Gateway cable and UDP LAN. In the above advice you gave to Jamsie, I followed it, but the line in question said "false". I have 1400 files shared, and based on the duplicate numbers of some of my downloads, I KNOW someone somewhere has searches that are hanging up on my files. I've also got Symantec Antivirus, coporate edition, with realtime file protection enabled.

Any words of advice?

Er, by the way, I'm not getting any uploads. I don't believe I actually stated it before, but that's my problem- no uploads whatsoever.

Well, I had one, but it didn't complete. And then it dissapeared. And the line in the bug report about incoming connections is still false.
