What does it mean when I subscribe to a forum?

Question What does it mean when I subscribe to a forum?
I know that subscribing to a thread a mail would be post to me, saying if soemone has responded. But what happenes when I subscribeto a whole forum? This is bacause normally I find that some threads are marked as read even if I never opened them. Maybe subscribing to the forum, the threads would bemarked correctly?

Well... And nothing else? Useful! Is there no way to leave unread the posts you haven't actually viewd even after a long time?

It marks threads as read if there have been no new posts in them since you last visited them.

Well, this can't be or I have a problem... Some old threads are marked as read even if I never looked at them.

By saying "since you last visited them", I meant the forums as a whole, not the individual threads.
