"This shortcut has been changed or moved. It will no longer work".

How to retrieve a file when its shortcut has been deleted?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If you have not figured this out for yourself yet:

1. You can bookmark that page using your web browser.
2. Since your topic is titled Desktop icon, then what you can do is use your browser's Copy Link option and paste it into a text document saved onto your desktop with your preferred title. Make sure you save it as a normal/plain text document and not a marked-up format document.
There are multiple other steps and I am not sure you are up to doing it which is why I did not answer your question last year. There were other reasons not related to you.

The format within the text document needs to be like this:
Code:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.
So make sure the web address has the . URL= . before the web address. No white space between the = and http.
Save the text document.

Rename the file extension from . .txt . to . .url
If your Windows operating system will not allow you then you will need to change settings to "show" file extensions.

For this forum thread section the example would be:
Code:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=https://www.gnutellaforums.com/tips-tricks/

I have provided an example in a zip file attached to this post below. (edited in->) I recommend you unzip the file, right-click the now unzipped file and choose open. This then becomes a shortcut to this forum section. Likewise you can do the same thing for any web page you wish to frequently return to at any point in time, simply by following the above instructions.

Default Desktop icons troubleshooting

First and foremost, my usual thanks for your prompt reply, not least for the detailed tip you have given me regarding my queston about creating a desktop icon for a website.
About your recent advice for Tips and Tricks when I submit a problem, I am afraid i could not find anywhere else to send in my question where Tips and Tricks are concerned.

With renewed thanks for your kindness and patience.

I am grateful for your unstinted help to an 85-year-old slowcoach...

Hi Joe,

You can try restoring the original file from your Recycle Bin or backup. If it's not there, you might need data recovery software.

Hope this helps

After a web search I found these:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/...f-2a14c417f84c

Go to the Desktop, right click on blank space, hover on 'sort by' option and choose 'alphabetical order', either 'ascending' or 'descending' according to your wish. You will notice the change.

This answer directly above was borrowed from https://brainly.in/question/53458741. Thanks to the smart one whom answered that question.

Why the system changes this I don't know, perhaps because you attempted to arrange the icons manually instead of via system command and thus after a computer reboot/startup it reverts to the previous setting of how the icons were arranged.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to help me with the problem of desktop icons in alphabeticala order. It is a tip which worked at times, but not now. I don't know why! Could it be that I am a slowcoach in computer navigation. Anyway. Will try out your method again, and renewed thanks and kind regards. joe
