I have downloaded onto my machine running Windows XP

I have an error message regading my save directory. I am told it is not valid and must choose another directory.

Whats even worse - I cannot get rid of the error message and it comes up immediately I boot up my machine.

I have paid upfront for the service and am getting nothing

How do I tell it not to boot up until I want it to ?

I have come across a similar issue in another section of the forum. Either re-tick your dwnld location or as Kath specified, manually make your own location for the dnlds & direct LW to that location (via options). How LW behaves is up to how you set LW's prefs; ie- Options ... etc. as Kath suggested plus more if you view the various options.
