Default mpg conversion

hi all,

recently downloaded a movie via limewire pro with the file extension .mpg . This is a staright MPEG file right? So why can't I get Quicktime or Windoze media player to play this file (respective players inform me this is an unsupported format when attmepting to play it). VLC also gives the same response....

New to this whole movie conversion game, but I suspect the secret to converting the file is given in the file name:

Xvid.ita.'film name'.ScR.NX-S Lions Gate Films THX.mpg

Is there any other software i should obtain to achieve conversion?
& what should I be converting a file of type 'mpg' to?

P.S anyone know the location of any consice 'howtos' on all the possible movie conversion scenarios? try'd searching for 'mpg conversion' but expert.com keeps raising it's ugly head, where I Am asked to part with my hard earned green for a likle piece of information!

Cheers

That's a new type of mpeg. If I can quote another website: To play XviD movies you first need to install the XviD codec on your computer.

Find it here! (Click this link.) It's apparently related to the Divx tech. which is mpeg4.

Default mpg conversion problems

hey,
thanks for the advice.

Did as instructed. But quicktime still informs me ' Could'nt open file as it is a file that quicktime does not understand'

this is after installing Divx 5.1.1 and the delegate file and placing it in 'Library/Quicktime' in both my current user and localhost folders.

Am I missing something.
cheers

With QT codecs, I'm not sure whether u may need to restart or not. Certainly in OS9 & earlier it would be compulsory for the system/QT to load it. Just to be o the safe side u could always repair permissions, which is not a bad thing to do after installing any software.

Sure, about Quicktime, but how about VLC? Still the same response? Try mplayer, if the others won't do it. And don't use WMP too much. It sucks.

Default opening mpeg movie file

Tried opening the file with mplayer. Same thing.

The application acts as though it is opening the file (via a progress bar), and then just sits there, with the file not opened??

How do I repair permissions. perhaps this will work for me.

Or perhaps the file is just screwed....?

cheers

This may well be due to the fact that the version of Mplayer is not compatible with your OS: I remember when I had OS 10.2.8 that the newest mplayer (v2.0b7) would open but it would refuse to play any files.
To repair permissions, Open a new Finder window and go to the Applications folder. Scroll down to the Utilities folder, double-click, go to Disk Utility, launch. In the menu on the left, click a disk and then check permissions (or just click repair permissions). Do that on a regular basis. It helps.
