can't play Avi file.(Movie)

I,m a rookie at this. I downloaded a movie (AVI) and tried to play it in media player. Media player says it,s either corrupt or that it doesn,t support the formatt. Help! Pls reply low tech...again, I'm a rookie at this stuff
