Default no sound on music files that were ok

Hi all,
Help !!!!!! Please !!!!!

I had a heap of music files saved that were working perfectly - up until tonight. I lost approx. 1/2 of them, as in, there one minute gone the next. The other 1/2, the ones that are still listed in the library, now have no sound.

I've tried them on several players including VLC and none of them work.

The speakers are ok, the mute button is not on. Everything else looks ok, I just can't hear anything.

Can anyone suggest a solution - what may have caused this problem or what I can do to fix it.

Any and all help appreciated.

Wow that has got to suck. First thought that comes to mind is a virus, trojan, or worm. Try running your anti-virus software, and any spy ware and ad ware removal programs you might have.

If you don't have these you can search the forums(upper right between f.a.q. and home), you will find links to several free ones.

My second thought would be something has changed in your sound card settings.

It would help if you listed your computer specs, and operating system.

Thanks for the response Fabion.

That was the first thing I did - adware, spyware and virus check. I made sure I'd got the latest updates before running them.
Came up with no hits.

I only got the system in Jan this year so everything is pretty much new. I'm running windows xp on a HP pavillion 80 gig hd, 512 ram,
Pentium 4 - 2.9 GHz. Not sure what else I can tell you.

(I'm not really what you'd call a computer guru although I am learning every day).

The really strange thing is that the avi files still play with no problem.

I usually use Windows Media player and when that didn't work I tried Real player and VLC, still nothing.

Once again, any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated.

Yours truly
Desparately seeking music.

I have sound again.

Still don't know what caused it. I had a thought that maybe system restore might help. Took it back about 14 hrs and hey presto - music.

Thanks again for trying to help out - much appreciated. It's nice to know you guys are here if I need you.

Me - happy dancin' around the room.
