I might need to get someone else onto this. They may reply soon or it could take a day/2, being this time of year...

My modem softw also looks totally different to that posted on the website but for yours ... well it's getting me a confused too. Without being there & trying to see where they've re-located everything. Unless they've changed the specifications of the modem & softw.

Salut shesaid, it happens SBC has a special firmware for the speedstream 5100 so it looks nothing like what is found at portforward.com. What you have to do is to enable the bridge mode so your modem does not act as a router.

This link does tell you how ( they tell to go at http://192.168.0.1 to access router, but enter 192.168.254.254 if that doesn't work).

http://www.kclug.org/pipermail/kclug...er/023833.html

Note that this will help connect a little (this will increase dl speeds a lot however) , but if you can't connect it is likely the fault of the firewalls you have on your machine.

LODR: salut mec!

Bonne chance

thank you both very much for the help

however, i am very clueless about what i'm doing, and while the instructions are quite simplistic to follow, i'm afraid i'm completely stumped with this one

10. Once the modem has restarted, go to the PC and configure the Ethernet NIC for either DHCP or Static IP service.
11.Once the Ethernet NIC has been configured for the appropriate service, attempt to surf the Internet. a) If
that fails, check the Ethernet NIC configuration and verify it has been configured correctly.

i made it as far as restarting the modem before i realized that i had no idea how to perform the above steps. in the end, i reset my modem using the button on the bottom and went to http://192.168.0.1, where i was asked for my username and password. this reconnected me to the internet, but i am still without a bridge connection..i could attempt it again, if you might be able to direct me to instructions for the above steps..apologies for being such a git :-)

Ok that's normal . Once bridged, your modem will connect to the internet only if you computer tells him to do so. That means you'll have to enter your internet config in windows xp. So for step 10 see http://public.pacbell.net/dsl/winxp/
at the section Configuring Windows XP for PPPoE Dynamic DSL

Then proceed to step 11.

Bonne chance
