The "LimeWireOther" zip file got the program to open in version 4.4.3 , it put an icon in the taskbar but it did not install an icon on the desk top nor add the program to the Add/Remove program folder. Then if I wanted to exit the program for any reason, I would have to reinstall by using the .exe in the zip file Basically it does the same as opening the LimeWireExecutable Jar File found in the C:\Program Files\LimeWire, folder. This folder always gets installed even though the program instalation hangs before completing and my computer has to be restarted. The install execute always stops at:-"C:\ProgramFiles\LimeWire\execNoWindow.exe""C:\Pro gramFiles\LimeWire\unpack200.exe" -r "C:\ProgramFiles\LimeWire\id3v2pack" "C:\ProgramFiles\LimeWire...This is as far as I could go. I hope this will help to resolve the install problem. I am able to use LimeWire as it is but would like to have it without the above quirks would appreciate your feedback |
Thanks for keeping in touch about what's going on, Dlddemon. What version of Windows are you using, and how much RAM do you have on the computer? For what it's worth (even though I doubt you'll like this answer), the LimeWire PRO Windows version does not do the 'unpacking' that causes the problems you're experiencing. So, if you'd like to purchase LimeWire PRO, you're guaranteed to have a smoother install. That said, we don't expect people to purchase PRO just to be able to use LimeWire easier, so we are still going to try and figure out what's going wrong with this installation. (We have to use the unpacking for the Free version because more people use free, and we have to lower the bandwidth by reducing the size of the installer.) |
Hello sberlin, I would like to give LimeWire a full trial before I commit myself to the Pro version. I have just started using an ADSL connection so am exploring the different P2P software out there and have had LimeWire recommended. I am using Windows98se with 192 sdram. As this is a Java program are there any Windows downloads I should be using, that may not be installed on my computer to help make LimeWire install easier? (ie apart from the J2SE runtime executable) Was any of the info I passed on useful? |
Yup, the info's very useful. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much we can do, short of providing the 'Other' download (the zip file). It won't install LimeWire into add/remove programs, but that isn't too large a deal, because you can uninstall it by deleting the LimeWire folder. You can create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on LimeWire.exe and choosing 'Create Shortcut' and then dragging that to your desktop. |
Thanks usiong the shortcut will help for now. I'll keep an eye out on the forum in case a solution is found... |
Diddemon: Glad to see you got LimeWire working. One possible reason about the problems you were having could have been memory corruption. Could you run a RAM test sometime at your convenience? There is a free tool available at http://www.memtest86.com This problem is very rare (less than one in several thousand people experience it) so we're kind of shooting in the dark for possible causes. Thanks. |
Diddemon: Yer gonna love LW with DSL!...I have Verizon DSL and its great fer file sharing...The new 4.4.3 is now workin fine for me, after countless attempts to correct the freeze up issue...Ya have to delete any traces of LW still left on yer PC from previous versions, doin that worked for me...Good luck! |
Update cost sberlin: I see that purchasing LW Pro will give me "free updates" for 6 months...Whats the cost after that? |
