how do you download the free version of limewire? it says free download everywhere but when i click on it i have to go through a membership thing

You get it from the official site here
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

Just make sure to download with the offline installer (not the recommended one) - fewer installation problems!

Don't download from scam sites, they'll rip you off every time

You're lucky because most newbies go through the membership thing and find themselve's being ripped-off by a scam site, i.e. paying an entry fee for Lifetime membership to a non-existent club, paying for free Limewire, buying bogus anti-spyware appsand some even end up paying a monthly subscription to their non-existent lifetime club
