Ideed, my connection mysteriously stopped around the 16 nov also, spooky huh, i had not adjusted anything at all. I run a programme called gnotella, which connects to the same sort of stuff as limewire, and that will not work either?

Can't connect

I cannot connect. I have Limewire Version 1.8C. Cable modem thru Charter Pipeline using WINPROXY. Tried on 5 different PC's
Limewire WILL NOT connect. I CAN however connect with other Gnutella programs such as gnucleus, gnotella, and Bearshare, but they suck. I really like Limewire. What's going on. I see a lot of other people are having the same problem also. ??????
Am I just going to have to UNINSTALL limwire and give up? give me some hope.

Unregistered December 4th, 2001 12:12 PM

I finally got it to work w/1.8C

Heres what I had to do: I found a web site which lists host connections and picked one from the list and added it as a connection in LW and it immediatly connected. Heres the web site http://www.gnusearch.com/php/host_list.php . Hope this helps someone else.

i telnetted and added host manually

Ok. I tried the telnet thing. It said Guntella OK then it said the connection had be severed by an external source or something. Does that mean that my school is blockin Guntella or something? How can I get around it? I also tried typing in the hosts as suggested above, no good.

Problems here too

I am getting problems here too, connecting, but it seems I have had success when adding the bearshare server. However, I want to make sure that I can access router.limewire.com

In the Terminal of Mac OS X 10.1.1, I type "telnet router.limewire.com 6346". Is this the correct command? If it is, I don't get the "GNUTELLA OK" message, I just get this:

Trying 64.61.25.139...
Connected to router.limewire.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

And then it just stalls and I have to terminate the process.

Any help would be appreciated.

Oi

Oi, limewire, i have asked about 30 people i know in the uk and they all have found that limewire ceased to work as from around the 16 of november. What is going on?

Unregistered December 6th, 2001 04:05 PM

I haven't been able to connect either. I have the same problem as others where all I see is the LimeWire splash image and the program opens but a second later it quits.
I tried the telnet thing and I wasn't able to connect, BUT, on a whim I tried to open my 1.6 version and it's working flawlessly. Methinks there's a bug in the 18.c version. If it's any help, I'm on an AMD K-62 500MHz running Windows 2000 Professional.

I am tired of hearing limewire say its not them and blam my isp. My reply to that is wake up dumbass and get your sh$$ working.

Conncetion problems

I've tried everything in the forums to try to be able to connect but I'm still not having any luck. I realize using a regular phone line may cause a few problems but not like this. The only thing I'm able to do is listen to the music I have already downloaded. I'm really starting to get nerve racked over this insanity. The problems just started the last day or so, and I've been using the program for a couple of months now.

re-writing auto connects

connecting

Noticed that there are a lot of people with connecting problems. This question has more to do with uploads but wondering if it is because of these connection problems.....usually I seem to be able to connect and download without much problem (lucky maybe) but have noticed that over the last couple of weeks when I go to "Monitor" that all uploads end up with a "transfer interrupted", some will get to 60% or more...very seldom will there be a "complete". I have not changed my config., do not run firewall, and even loaded 1.8c which has had no effect. Even though this does not directly affect me, I am concerned as to why so many uploads are failing...can't see how this is something that I have done...I know that there must be a lot of frustrated people out there....please advise as to whether this is a Limewire problem, an ISP problem, or is it possible that there is something that needs to be fixed on my computer.................thank you

Don't listen to the gumpf about limewire 1.9 being the best. It doesn't work either.
My limwire used to work perfectly until a few weeks ago it just stopped?
So has everyone elses that i know in england?
Limewire just blames the internet providers, which it clearly isn't if so many people are having trouble.
In the the vain hope anyone can help, i am running a pentium 4 (1.7 GHz) with windows 2000.

I can't believe how many people are so rude to the people who are giving you this service for FREE! Especially when your complaint is not being able to ILLEGALLY steal music. Not that I have a problem with this, I do it too, but don't be such an a$$ to the people who are giving you the ability to do it in the first place. Programmers are people too!

Phil_T December 11th, 2001 07:55 PM

Well said......

very well said.....but it would be nice if limewire would respond as to why all of a sudden there seems to be so many problems....is it the new release 1.8c......??????limewire.....hello....please respond.....thank you.....we do appreciate the free service but it would be nice if it could be fixed or at least let us know what gives......thank you

Try downloading v2.0.2. I wasn't able to connect recently with 1.8c but have no problem connecting using the new version.

Previous Version Download Site

While the debate rages as to whether v2 is worth it or not, here is where you can find previous versions of LimeWire:

1.8 good: paid pro 2.02 sucking for holiday air

-Figure this -
the free 1.8 is connecting like a whiz. Paid version=LW2 only manages 1 net connection 3 hosts. woo hoo! What the heck?

I entered a bunch of host choices for LW2 to auto connect - it does nothing.

I want the stability of 1.8 with the 2.0 por feature set.

2.0 users with suggestions for getting connected PLEASE reply!

Thanks,

Can't connect

I downloaded 2.0.2 and never did get it to connect. I ended up here, and took the suggestion to get 1.7c, and now I connect everytime without problems. I'm posting this so others might be able to cheer up, and have a better day.

Thank you to the LW guys and gals, your efforts are appreciated.

Nice work, Errant Juggler. The older version of LimeWire (1.8) connects MUCH better than the 2.02 version. Thanks for listing the URL's for past versions!

Firewall Caused Problem

Well, after 2.0.2 worked for a bit it also started to have problems. I turned off my firewall and every version worked fine so I updated my firewall software (ZoneAlarm) to the latest version and now I connect every time with it loaded.

The message here is if you are running a firewall (software or hardware) try turning it off and see if you can connect. If so, that's the problem area you need to address.

No Connection

I have a Mac OS 9.1 running through AOL.
I downloaded LimeWire and it won't connect.
I have no known firewalls.
I open "File" and click on Connect, Nothing happens
What is the problem?

Thanks for the link to old versions! I, too, just paid for the 2.0.2 Pro version and the connection sux! Hardly any files or none at all. Even after reading the posts here I still don't get it (and I'm a technical type).

maphead January 5th, 2002 04:21 PM

So - that's the interface...

Big Whoop! = SOOOO What?
I get that the ultrapeer (U.P.) is a matching filter - sends my requests to only the machines that meet the req for the search. SO I expect that that as I search for more shtuff _ I get more hosts. Instead of the LW1.7/1.8 'connect to everything, then look' way of searching -I am supposed to get better matched results form 'smarter' connections.
However - either I am not connecting to anyone who has even the most mundane crap OR the U.P. AINT WORKING LIKE SHOULD!

Unregistered January 5th, 2002 06:04 PM

I've been reading these messages all day, since that's all I can do, I haven't been able to connect to limewire all day. People seem to be complaining about lots of things, but I don't see many mentioning my problem. I've used limewire for months, since I bought my new imac, and been fairly happy with v1.7, but this afternoon (Sat, Jan 5) it would never connect. I went to the website (one problem I had with 1.7 was that the help never worked, I never knew these forums existed until today). When I saw there was a new version, I rushed to download it, it seems ok except that I still can't connect. There are no firewalls and yes, I am connected to the internet, although it is to a 56k modem, but that's been good enough for the past months.

Ok, here's the question I hope someone will answer: Is something wrong with the system today??? Why can't I connect today when I've been able to for months, no problem? Thanks from chilly Texas.

Unregistered January 5th, 2002 06:47 PM

Stats are wrong?

I'm connected now. It says I have 1 net (Ultrapeer) with 2 hosts and two files 8192kb.

However... If I search for anytype and put the word new. turn off grouping and sort by IP, there are a lot more than what it being said in those stats. A ton more.

Unregistered January 7th, 2002 01:12 AM

Aha! I get it...

Hey wow! I actually get what Limewire 2.04 is on about now! The single 'Ultrapeer' server most people are getting connected to is actually useful! No wonder they took the statusbar stats out of the bottom of the screen! The stats never seem to be correct. Try it! Try searching for something when connected to this one ultrapeer server - you might be surprised. And a note to anyone reading this thread - Don't be put off about Limewire yet, I was almost ready to delete it after reading this thread but instead I gave it a go (I just upgraded from 1.4 -> 2.04) and have gotten 2 files I've been looking for for months in 2 hours. Top work!
Please be more patient with Limewire, don't judge performance on how many hosts it tells you that you are connected to - I can give you a simple Visual Basic app that can lie about that! Just judge it on what you get.
In the mean time, I'm gonna give Limewire a go - in one week I'll try and post my findings. I'll at least give it a week!

Old Version 1.3

Hi!

The old Version 1.4 I'm currently using doesn't connect at all, no matter what I do. Are these old versions cancelled?

And on that download page there's the oldest version about V1.4, where are the older ones?
http://www3.limewire.com/download/

I have to get a Install-Anywhere-version!

Regards,
Amorn

Unregistered January 8th, 2002 04:20 PM

RE: Amorn

Amorn,
I don't think any of these versions are cancelled, but I agree that on older versions of Limewire it is significantly harder to maintain good connections to the network.
Advice: Ignore some of the people who rely on statistics in this forum and Download the newest version of Limewire. Trust me, you wont ever look back - especially if you are a 56k modem user!

Another connection sob story

I'm not able to connect to the gnutella network thru Limewire and haven't been able to since 12/27/01.

I've used Blubster and it's working fine.

I reinstalled my original LW (v 1.5) and still would not allow me to connect. I also cannot connect to the community.

The program loads fine but simply will not connect, even if I manually add host addresses.

The only firewall I've got is ZoneAlarm, and JAVAVW is set up to function as a server, but to be sure I closed the program, and still no change.

I am downloading v 1.8 in the hopes that it will work, after reading the posts in this thread it sounds pretty reliable.

Today I downloaded but did not install v 2.something because the users at CNET warned me off due to a spyware program which came attached. I started to install the new version and cancelled because the installer kept trying to contact other sites while it installed. So I cleaned up my hard drive and am just wondering what to do if v 1.8 doesn't work either.

Please reply and let me know what the possible problem is. Thanks.

Chinle January 8th, 2002 05:00 PM

One more thing

With Limewire v 1.5, it's always been difficult to keep a connection open. I've aborted sessions in the past because it was so frustrating, but I've never been able to just not connect, period.

crohrs January 8th, 2002 05:00 PM

Chinle: try adding router4.limewire.com:6346 to the top of your quick-connect host list. Let me know if that doesn't work.

Unregistered January 9th, 2002 02:54 PM

Still no connecting...

Crohrs,

I tried your suggestion and still nothing. I've Dl'd 2.02 and got the dlder trojan, so that's coming off, but even that one didn't go through. Hope you all have an idea.

Unregistered January 10th, 2002 02:46 AM

Hi!

Even wirth theses new adress-hosts:
router1.limewire.com
router2.limewire.com
router3.limewire.com
router4.limewire.com
router5.limewire.com
...
and the port 6346, as being told
NOTHING works.
I'm also using that old V1.3, because I need an installer sneaking around administrator rights.
But I just can't get connected.

Which other versions support install anywhere?
And why can't I use another port in case this specific one is blocked within the network I use?

Regards,
Tom

crohrs January 10th, 2002 01:38 PM

LimeWire 1.3 is nearly a year old and uses bootstrap servers that no longer exist. Please upgrade!

You can control your client's listening port, but you can't control our bootstrap server's listening port.

Unregistered January 11th, 2002 04:53 AM

Still not connecting...

Crohrs,

I can see where he's using a year-old client, and having problems, that he shouldn't be suprised. But maybe he has something there, could a network block on the port be a problem? And if so, is there a way around it. I found a tunneling package, and was thinking of trying that, but I'm not sure it will work with P2P.

The problem isn't just LimeWire though. It's Kaazaa, Phex, Morpheus, Caracho, Gnotella, and others. With the Gnu-based clients, I can see the similarity, and if one is down, the several might be down. But maybe this is one situation to look at in future developments, opening multiple ports so that many pathways exist, even in a 'dynamic' function perhaps.

So the endless red button continues....

Deka

crohrs January 11th, 2002 07:31 AM

Yes, I think you're right. Most of the people who still can't connect are being blocked by their ISPs. The simple test is to try telnetting to router4.limewire.com, port 6346.

Also, I'm almost positive that ancient versions of LimeWire won't work since the bootstrap service has changed a few times.

This should not be happening. Thinking of where you would have gotten the version that had the trojan I thought of <http://www3.limewire.com/download/> and it had 2.0.2 modified from last year. It would be good if the archive did not have infected releases. I also think it is important to have older versions so if 2.0.2 could be cleaned up and then reposted that would be great.

Unregistered, if you got the 2.02 from somewhere else say where you did so others will not get the trojan.

telnet: connect to address 64.61.25.140: Connection refused
telnet: connect to address 64.61.25.139: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
the message means my ISP(university school) is blocking port 6346. right?
but, I was able to connect the host.
and excited Limewire!
I asked my school web system manager that "cange something?" said "no"

please tell me what to do?

crohrs January 14th, 2002 07:14 AM

pei: try telnetting to router4.limewire.com port 6349. If that succeeds, your school is probably only blocking port 6346. If it fails, they're probably blocking all non-web traffic.

In the former case, you may still be able to use Gnutella, but with great difficulty since most vendors use port 6346 by default. (BearShare is a notable exception.) In the latter case, you're really stuck without the sysadmin's help. :(

LW 1.4

Hmmmmm, I'm also using 1.4, and I really don't want to upgrade because of the whole "bundled apps" thing. Every time I get into LW, it tries to connect to gnutellahosts.com:6346 but will not connect. It just disappears from the connections tab. Any suggestions?
