Limewire disconnecting itself Hi, Ever since I downloaded the newest version of Limewire, (4.9.30)it will run for awhile, sometimes for hours, usually for only minutes before it disconnects itself! I 've made sure that I don't have a firewall blocking it and the thing is, the older version of Limewire ran fine! It's very frustrating to be downloading something, and then come back to find it hasn't even started the download since Limewire disconnected. I don't know how to fix it, or where even to begin! Otherwise, if I want to be able to actually get the downloads, I can't leave the computer for even a few minutes because it will disconnect and I will have to close out of Limewire completely and restart it. With the older version, I was able to go to sleep and let Limewire work all night, now this is impossible. Is anyone else having this problem with Limewire 4.9.30? Does anyone know how I could fix it so that Limewire doesn't disconnect until I want it to? Thanks so much! |
Machine doesn't appear to have an active internet connection Yeah, I get the same problem. The old versions worked fine, but now I get this message every couple of minutes: your machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking limwire from accessing the internet. limewire will automatically keep trying to connect to your netowrk unless you select "Disconnect" from the file menu. I'm sure my firewall isn't blocking it, and also, it won't let me browse the internet after it disconnects and gives me that error message. Please help!!! Running WinXP Pro with all the updates. |
Going to need a little more Info. Can you give us a total description of your set up: 1. OS version? (Eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (Eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 9. Who is your ISP provider? ( AOL/MSN/Comcast/Tiscal) 10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. 11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is. * Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml 12. Do This test, Is the result True/False? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...757#post103757 Is the result True/False 13. Do a speed test post the results here. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ |
Hello: I registered to the forum because lately I am experiencing the same disconnection problems as stated in the two previous posts. This began happening almost 3 weeks ago, but for the last 4 days it got worse and the Limewire disconnects itself and also disconnects my internet connection too often...I have to restart the pc to reconect to the internet and when I go to the Limewire and begin downloading, it disconnects again. After doing it 7 times in the last hour I decided to post in the forum. I use WinXp, 512 Ram, a lot of free space in the disc and the main question is why is it happening now if I haven't changed anything (I still didn't upgraded to the 4.9.3 version, I still have the 4.8.1? It used to work before but not now. Thank you for your help, Regards Roberto |

Just thought I would let you guys know what worked to fix my connection promlems....installed the new 4.9.30 had problems..installed the 4.9.33 had problems ,,,,oh yea this were the pro versions....ANYWAY...my 4.9.33 is up and running like a raped ape now...tried all kinds of fix's.....then wild hair decieded to grab me one of those updates on my sun coffee...(java)...worked for me...and the 33 version is smokeing them down....take cares guys....might pass it on .... |
I've got the same problem since I upgraded to 4.9.30. I upgraded to 33 and it's still happening. Upgraded my Java, still happening. I ran the tests from Grandpa's (I think) reply. First test got "It worked!" Second test did not provide a true/false response, but took me to another thread "For those who can't connect." Went to Speakeasy and got a way low test off the L.A. server. Unplugged my dsl modem for 10 seconds and tried again, this time with the San Francisco server, a bit farther from here than L.A. and got Download 675 kbps, Upload 121. Tried L.A. again and got Download 698, Upload 110. What Limewire is currently doing is running at Turbo when I'm working on the computer. If I leave it for thirty minutes, Limewire goes to sleep. I click with the mouse on anything and LW says it's waking the connection. This is the common occurrance. But some times I come back and it's just plain disconnected and I have to go to file and connect again. It's so annoying. I used to leave it running day and night. Overnight, my big files would have completed the download, but not anymore. Plus this shuts down or slows down the 8 folks I've got uploading big files, too. I'm running an emachine with XP Home, with an AMD 2600+ processor, 512 MB RAM, minus whatever the video card uses. The XP firewall is turned off, so I'm only running Norton Internet Security and Symantic virus scanner. LW is on the permit list, though I get boxes continually asking me if I want to let this or that web address through, which may or may not have anything to do with LW. It advises me to permit always, so I do. Am I forgetting anything? Oh, well. Please oh master programmers, please track this idiosyncrasy down and fix it soon. I love LW, and I don't want to start looking around for another program that works. |
thought i had it fixed got a little ahead of myself the java update fixed some of my problems...I am not completely disconnecting...but am going to sleep sometimes....what i have done to work around this is cut my active down loads to three..then stack rest in Que...to start when one of the others finish...open my yahoo messenger turn on launch cast radio....then walk away or go to sleep...works most of the time...but not all...have noticed that sometimes my conection drops to execentlant instead of turbo...and a couple times found it disconected....befor the taste of new java...i was haveing my down load speads jump way up there[total speed] but not moveing at all on each file....then if tried to close to my tray it wouldn't ...and if did get it to minimize ...and reopen it right away was getting a blank page.... so am like you hope somebody finds a fix and soon...but noticed the 30 was worse than the 33 so maybe the next version will be there........??? i even tried setting ports..through my router ..but didn't help.....and i didn install eDonkey too....the pro version ...so here i am with two paid versions ...lime wire pro and eDonkey Pro..sure hope something breaks soon as i like the lime wire best ......but............... ldeanjames/hopper393 There is a bug in the newer versions of LimeWire that causes it to disconnect while in the sleep mode hopefully the Dev's will figure it out before to long. hopper393 You probably have a graphics issue the link below might help with the minimizing issue and the blank screen. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=39600 ldeanjames I wish I had a answer to you problems but the same thing is happening to me and I haven't figured a way around it yet LimeWire had this same problem a few versions back and they had semi gotten it under control but it has crept it ugly head up again even worse than it was before. Luckily I do not DL anything anymore unless I am testing so it really doesn't annoy me because it gives me a problem to try and see if I can beet it somehow. But I haven't been able to play with it to much I have been working long days and hours. Have a few more weeks of 12hrs a day 7 day a week then I will be able to play with it. Not that I will be able to do anything but I love to try. |
Thanks Thanks grandpa.... get the idea you know what your talking about....running a g-force fx 5200....hehehe...anyway so you know I pulled my 33 and went back to my old 4.8.1 till they get the bug worked out...all though I did get to likeing the speed the newer versions had as long as i was working....but couldnt walk away from desk..hehehe I tried all kinds of things...from setting ports through my linksys and also my comtrend ...only running norton virus and worm ..with lime permitted and also took me a while to figure out how and where to find the javaw file to permit it too.. was even trying to un-tweak my com port and turn off hardware acceleration...adjusted my recieve and transmit buffers on my comport...would you believe I have only been playing with a pc not even a year now....anyway thanks ....now i just need how to work the BT plug in on edonkey....hehehe...found a few files there ..that i been looking 6 months for on lime....don't take that wrounge ....love my lime....guess i need to watch the board closer to see when they get this bug fixed....... THANKS AGAIN Just an old stoved up road tramp ------BILL---- |
Oh, Grandpa, it just keeps getting worse. This a.m. very early, I saw LW had again gone to sleep. And it won't wake up. It's in a coma. I checked my port under advanced and it was a totally different port from 6346. I changed it back and applied. For about five minutes I had Turbo charged, then LW went back to sleep. I've cold booted, reset the modem, though it reads high numbers on Speakeasy. I think I'm going to have to reinstall LW. And lose my close to downloaded movie files. Rats! Is it me? Am I doing something totally wrong? It's been working so well for so long. I've got ten ultrpeers trying to connect and failing. Sigh. I'm going to reinstall now, because I can think of no other option. Under advanced it had gone back to a long weird port number. Changed it back and nothing happened. I have so much to learn to get this all together. Well, wish me luck. |
I am hopping mad! Grandpa, I'm so upset: Poor you, working 12 hour days (for which I hope you are getting lots of pay) and I'm here fussing with my computer, having worse issues with WinXP Home Explorer, than LW even. That's not what I'm angry about. Is there anyway to track down those lovely LimeWire users who purposefully misname their movie files? I've just learned to use the preview feature so I don't spend days downloading Crash, only to find I've been given a porno movie. One Batman Begins was Harold and Kumar go to "White Castle", and another was "House of Wax", neither of which I want taking up room on my computer. Another I was saving to enjoy later was Robots, and it too was a porno movie. What sad people that have to do that! Worse, because I didn't check them out right away, a whole bunch of other LW users downloaded them off my system unaware of what they were getting. Just makes me sick! This never happened two months ago. I bet there's no way to track these poor excuses for a joke back to the orginators. So sad. But thank goodness for the preview option. On top of everything else, I've been downloading a lot of Batman Begins because almost everyone of them has something radically wrong with it, like the background sound track loud, but the voices too low to hear, or they aren't the movie at all, and another bunch won't play due to codecs missing for the avi files while other avi files work just fine. I downloaded a huge list of codecs, but I don't want to install any of them till I know which ones are missing. I found a list of the ones on my system under My Computer properties, hardware devices, audio/video. At least I know which ones don't need to be installed, but where do I go to find out which ones do need to. Wish the message that some codecs were missing would tell us which ones. Oh, and then, get this, I got an avi file of Batman Begins to download and it was beautiful, great picture, great sound, but it was only half the movie and no matter how I do my search I can't find the other half. I'm so tired and bummed out. Sorry, don't need to be laying all this on you or anyone else, just feeling a bit low right now. Wish I was working, even 12 hours a day. It's better than playing on this computer all day and all night. I want to go back to work so badly, but I don't even know if they will give me my old position back. After 5 years of giving UPS my very best, too. I finally had to pay for a lawyer to write them a letter about discrimination, but they are so huge and have so many lawyers that I'm sure they could care less about our pitiful little letter. Meantime I'm doing a web job search just in case. Oh, sorry again. See? What a grump I am tonight. I think I need to go sleep all this away and start fresh in the morning. I really appreciate the feedback I get from everyone concerned. Helping each other is just about all we've got. I emailed a letter to LW Pro Tech Support about two weeks ago and never got a reply. Is that usual? Well, good night and sweet dreams to all. Try not to work too hard, Grandpa. And do they happen to have an opening for another hardworker? Just kidding! |
Grandpa ,,,Thanks Wanted to let you know the java worked on my gray screen ...and was wondering...whats the scoop on this beta .35...?? does it go to sleep on you too...and is it staying conected...??? thinking of slamming it in...giving it a try and see how it works for me...one day back with my old 4.8.1 pro and am ready to try and ....hehehe..even put in my 4.9.23 and wham conection prob...but ....seriously thinking of slamming the beta .35 pro in....got any tips on that peice of software...??? just an old highway tramp ---------Bill---------- |

I have no idea why you got the 2 invalid e-mail notifications. Just sent off a e-mail to check it out have not gotten it back yet. Are you sure you got it from the official site. How much did it cost ? As far as the latest version goes I am away from home and haven't had a chance to test it yet so I don't know how it is acting and what problems it might have. The link below is to the official site the page for Pro support. Do they recognize your e-mail address |
Grandpa its the regular lime wire site..same site you get when you link from limewire help from the program...maybe just that when you submitt and go to the next page...top right you see the invaliad stuff ..maybe am takeing it wroung....also got no auto eletronic response saying weather my mail went through ....hey tried that beta version 4.9.35 from the down load page and it also goes to sleep ....you know knocks back to execelent when left alone..but keeps down loading...just slower than the turbo mode...just linked to the site again ...and yes it is the official site as my favorites it list it as......and that is just by adding..no rename on my part....and my email addy gets me past the buy page...to the 3.9.33 page....and also then on to the beta page too.....you messed with the beta much....??? what if I uninstall and clean my registry....will it also then sleep.....not just uninstall but munch all left over folders with my norton cleen sweep..... ----Bill--- |

Yeah it will still go to sleep. What sleep mode is supposed to do is when you are not searching or requiring multiple connections it drops the unneeded connections thus making more connections for other users who need them, and improving the the network performance overall. I myself have not noticed a drop in DL speed when it is in sleep mode but I have seen it disconnect in sleep mode. I think that this happens when the connection you have goes off line. And there is a bug that doesn't tell it to find another connection when this happens. I think the DEV should tell LW to keep at least 2 connections at all times then it might stop the disconnect issue. And yes I play with the BETAS allot I love to see if I can break things. One of these days they will make one I can not break but until then I will have my fun. |
well then... Hehehehe ...just had a brain storm...and for me thats a lot...you like to break .....huh..??and i get the feeling your plugged in to the tech's here....just something i feel....would be nice to have that two conection plug in....for a newbie to computors ....i do have a small system to really get busy with some down loads... thinking of putting that beta back in...its just the loseing of the connection when it sleeps i don't like....do you know how to work around it yet....?? clue me if you do... or help me set mine in...like said only been playing with this toys not even a year yet....had to going crazy.....can't work no more and always been a man on the move....but three lung colapses since 2000 and the last one while in oregon the damn saw bones chopped half my left lung...and am still going to have more colapses....and only 45... here is what I am goint to do...finish up 4 down loads ...then un install....clean up ........ Hello, I think I mentioned in an earlier reply that I emailed LW Pro support for help on the LW going to sleep issue, as well as the avi files that complain of missing codecs. I never got a notice saying they'd received my email or an answer to my plea for help. It's perplexing to say the least. I'm going to check out Kazaa Plus, since I also bought their pro software, just didn't like the program nearly as well as LimeWire. But I'm so tired of getting misnamed nasty movies or just plain other movies named wrong from LW. I'll check out Kazaa and if it's got the same problems, I'll be back. Good luck everyone in getting your issues resolved. |

2. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=47310 3. Idle mode: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=32303 It doesn't affect downlds just reduces unnecessary connections such as for searching when you're obviously not around to do a search, & thus offers an offering for someone trying to connect to the network. From my experience idle mode has not affected my downlds whatsoever!!! Sure some downlds go thru periods of lower than expected speeds but that's expected & most times my speeds in idle mode have been identical to active mode. |
Grandma... I used kaaza a while back...the old style free version..then went to Imesh then here to lime...been running lime wire for almost 8 months...never did the paid version of kaaza...but know this I have tried and tried to get it out of my registery and still haven't been able to...I have used win clean 2000 ...mechanic and even tried to delete it on my own in my registry and it still shows up..my spynuker in safe mode can't get rid of it either...I have reformatted this computor a few times too...and still have that bundle mag ......anyway ...hope you like the paid version of kaaza..me I am going to fight with Lime wire a little longer..but as i mentioned befor I also have the paid version of eDonkey too...as for haveing problems with your avi files ...you going to find that everywhere....or atleast i have....but let me turn you onto another site for software to change those files with free software and codec's....and some trail software...plus if you will log in....there is some real good forms and help for learning how to use the software......its called afterdawn .....its a burner and ripper heaven...hehehe...with a lot of free incodeing software...and if you look the forums over you will also find direstions on how to use the software you want .... http://www.afterdawn.com/software/index.cfm maybe this site will help you make some of those avi files play...or convert them to another format you can play.... you will find tools here that will tell you what format the video is in and then what format the audio is in...and so on...that way you got an idea of what you need to do to it to burn it to play... take care and good luck... just an old highway tramp -----Bill---- |
Afterdawn is a good forum. A member myself! |
Okay. I was going to mess around, reinstall Kazaa. (I'd uninstalled it when I realized it didn't come close to LimeWire in just about anything. So here I am still messing with LW, even upgraded to 37, and it tends to spend more time in turbo charged, but still goes to sleep, now and again. I did finally realize that it was still downloading at a snail's pace while it slept, (a software version of snoring?) and I tend to wake up in the middle of my night and get up to jiggle the mouse, to wake up LW, too. It hasn't disconnected completely so far, unlike 30 and 33. "They" must have had a reason to program LW to fall asleep, one of those "It seemed a good idea at the time." Weird thing is that under properties now, it's saying I have version 1,0,0,2. That's the main reason I upgraded, thinking a fresh install would get the correct version to show. It didn't though, but LW "seems" to be working as usual. I appreciate the pointer to other threads with info on misnamed files (I'm guessing.) Maybe I'll find something to do about it. The one today was supposed to be another "Crash." The first and biggest hint was that it downloaded to 100% in minutes while supposedly 698 MBs. It was an ad for a "fun" website. Does this non-person really think I'll go to his site? He's dummer than I am. So I'm happily downloading another Crash and another Madagascar, though I couldn't preview them, got the codecs missing message. So I'm also slap happily downloading every codec and plug in that says it will help avi files to play, so maybe I'll get it right by accident. Don't worry, I'm being careful. Thanks again everyone. I may get frustrated and even angry sometimes, but LimeWire has given me hours and hours of entertainment. That's what it's all about, right? |
Got a Question grandma....did you completely uninstall lime befor you installed the new...?? then did you also wipe the extra folders left behind.....then run a regestery cleaner to get rid of the commands....you know basically do a fresh clean install.... I installed the 37 this morning...and havent had no problems yet.. but have either had launchcast radio playing or my nero show time loaded with play list...and really havent been away long enough to let mine go into sleep mode... just an old highway tramp ----Bill--- |
same problem here, but still get my downloads finished I receive that stupid little message of limewire currently connecting to the internet or NOT connected to the internet. Well after i receive that message i do nothing. When Limewire is CONNECTED to the internet i get enough time to get ALL the downloads i want. After awhile that message pops up and i just ignore it and go to sleep. I wake up in the morning and BAM!!!!! MY DOWNLOADS ARE FINISHED and limewire IS YET FULLY CONNECTED. I dont' know what happens through out the night but i get my downloads FINISHED. Just tought of letting you all know. I also run Windows XP with all it's updates, use AOL and connect via DIAL-UP. My laptop is about 2 years old and it's a compaq. |
No, I was a bad girl and just let the new install wipe out the previous version. It's a lot better about staying awake longer, but I just may do a total wipe, including reg keys, if yours turns out to behave better. Want to hear something really weird? At 7 this morning, I woke LW up, after which it completely disconnected itself and I had to reconnect. When I did connect, I had three movie downloads of mine going and one upload. At the bottom of my screen the KB/s went wild. It usually runs between 1 KB/s and 19 for downloads, less for uploads. This morning, my downloads were splitting 1,400 KB/s between them. I thought it was just a glitch, but the percentages of the downloads were jumping upwards by two and three percent a minute. Sadly, it's now doing it's normal thing, except the uploads are higher than my downloads. They're splitting them between 8, while I only have one left to finish, and it's at 98% already. Sure wish I knew how my system got such a great kick in the behind there for awhile, so I could get it to do it again. I also spent an hour or two downloading more plugins and codecs last night. Everyone of the three downloads I was doing failed in the preview due to missing codecs. This was on the Windows Media Player. I can try them on the other players now that they've gone into my video folder. What a pain. I wonder if having the Media Player 10 could be causing this? Oh, well, old story with no happy ending in sight yet. If anyone finally gets a hold on a fix, please let me know. Thanks! |
Wow! On a dial up connection? That's fantastic! I've got DSL and I used to have my downloads finished by morning, but not anymore. Did you say you were on 4.9.30 or 33? When mine goes to sleep, it's still working, but at 1 and 2 or 3 KB/s. It takes a long time to get a 700 MB movie downloaded with that, at least on my poor system. I just ordered another 512 DDRAM to put in my system. I don't know if more resources will help or not, but I can always hope. Happy downloading! |
Well i use Limewire 4.9.11 and the downloads i'm talking about is the SONGS. Now about the VIDEOS they some of them are only half way through or still bearly downloading cuz of the dial-up connection. |
Grandma Well when i laid down this morning i had both running lime and edonkey....lime .37 woke up to the not conected ..but yet they were running....now those crazy readings your talking about i use to get them on the 30 abd the 33...plus sometimes a gray screen...that wouldn't close to the tray...but would minimize..and open to gray ..but if let run a while would starighten out on its own....per grandpa advive i uninstalled my java 1.5 and went with the 1.4 from sun....and what it was ...I have a accelerated graphics card in.... think it was in this thread....scroll back up to the top or start of this thread and you will see where he told me since i changed my java ....no more of those wild speeds nor the gray screen...... let me know if you see where he told me about it... Take care... just an old highway tramp -----Bill----- |
Grandma this is where grandpa told me about the java...click on this thread and read more on that wild reading your talking about...as i said in my last post when i changed my java no more gray screen or those wild speeds that we both know ain't happening.....and your right bring up your mem ....i am running four sticks for a total of 1024....( yea i got daul mem) this one set up as a gamer...hehehe but do more multimedia than anything.. ldeanjames/hopper393 There is a bug in the newer versions of LimeWire that causes it to disconnect while in the sleep mode hopefully the Dev's will figure it out before to long. hopper393 You probably have a graphics issue the link below might help with the minimizing issue and the blank screen. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showt...;threadid=39600 __________________ A little common sense goes a long way Later Grandpa hope this helps.....but seriously would think about doing a clean install instead of a the way you did....just keep in mind that when you install like you did....part of the old version stays ....but also keep in mind that you also may lose your incomplete folder...but there is a way to save it...and that is to move the folder to the same area your shared folder is.....myself i have two hard drives and both folders are on my massive storage slave drive so evertime i install i have to direct the save to this area...then it picks up both and i have my incomplete and shared folders... take care......... just an old highway tramp -----Bill----- |
Hi there Hopper 393 and im your bosssss. Okay, that explains your fast downloads, im your boss. (Hey, nobody's the boss of me! Heh heh.) I do music and videos and have had so much fun with both. Is there no DSL locally that you can get? I was lucky to be living near one of Verizon's DSL hubs or stations, or whatever they're called. My friend, who lives two long blocks south of me can't get it. Hopper, I'll for sure check out the site on graphics. My card came with the system, and is fairly good, better than a lot, but certainly not for any serious gaming. And I'm not sure it's worth the 135 MBs of RAM it steals off the top of my 512, which is actually 490 now (some corruption maybe?) With the new stick I'll have 877 which is cool for me. eMachines told me my system will only take up to one gig. Last time I was in Best Buy, I drooled all over the video card displays, but the only ones I feel are worth tearing my system apart are financially out of my ball park. By the way, when you mentioned upgrading your Java a while back, I flashed because I had just upgraded mine to the newest version. My screen never went gray, but it's mostly gray anyway, except in the middle where it's green. The graphics seem okay, in fact. What I get is the screens that only clear half away, and leave a portion inside another open window. Seems to me that would be resources, but I could be wrong, and usually am. I was feeling grumpy earlier because I downloaded a whole 'nother porn movie instead of Crash...again. I couldn't preview it because of the codecs issue. But in my rambling pursuit of the illusive miracle codec last night, I inadvertently downloaded DivX. And darn if the DivX player doesn't play all but one of the rascally files that failed on every other player. Pure blind luck. Wish I could fix something with logic, but I'll take what I can get. Back a moment to the dozing LW: It's still going to sleep on me, but there are times when I leave on errands, come back an hour or so later and find it still on Turbo Charged. So I'll be grateful for that much. And this is now officially novel length, or novella at least. Another aside: I have in a shared folder named eNovels under LW, the only novel of mine that never sold. Sci fi, horror, thriller book. I may have to put the eBook Reader download in there to make it easier to read, should anyone ever want to read it. It ain't bad. Honest. I know some of use guys read books, too. Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. Forums are much more fun than I thought. I'm outta here. |
Take care sweetheart and hope you get things figured out....you see me bouncing this board or the one at afterdawn please step in and say hi.... just an old highway tramp ----Bill---- |
Well, hello there! Is afterdawn a forum site? Or your intention to be awake at dawn? If it's a forum, I'll have to check it out. This is the only one I've ever been to. I usually get things figured out eventually, or find someone who already has and can explain it to me. (Wink) I'll certainly aim a "Howdy" your way should we find ourselves on the same page again. Thanks again for your kind feedback and gentle pushes in the right direction to find my answers. Much much appreciated. Have a very good one. |

haha alittle late on responding back but, Fu*k IT. Well i where i live, there is no DSL or RoadRunner available and it sucks. But i do have a Compaq laptop with wireless internet built-in and was wondering if i could just a buy a card and travel using internet?(I heard that from a friend) i dont' know how it works so goo figure. But is there is something like that, let me know cuz i would really want that instead of this stupid Dial-Up. oh well ... last but not least i read something about video game cards, well i have NVIDIA installed and it came with my laptop. I dont' know if that might be what you guys are talking about. |
It's constantly dropping me too to the point it's pretty much unusable. It doesn't just drop istelf, it terminates my DSL connection. The modem connect light goes off and it resets itself. Seems to be getting worse. |
Um.........experiencing all of the above, i leave the computer for a couple of minutes and LW goes to sleep, any longer and it disconnects and disappears completely, when I start it up again, none of what I was downloading is there any more, so like earlier, i was about 78% downloaded on a movie, and i turned it back on expecting it to be there but all of it was gone.............., I also agree with grandma, I ended up downloading loads of porn under names of proper movies..............plus some movies only download the sexy bits! Problem for me is, I'm pretty computer illiterate and I dont understand what you guys are talking about when you suggest ways to fix it.............. anyone wanna explain it to me like a 3 year old? Oh and i also want to point out that I only started haveing problems about 2 weeks ago when i updated to the new version. Before, i used to leave it on all night downloading movies and hey presto, loads of movies ready and waiting for me in the morning! I dont understand why just moving my mouse seems to re-awaken my comatose LW................... I need help but dont confuse me with jargon! |
Here I am, a day late and a dollar short. I finally had to sleep. What a waste of good computer time! Except when I have great adventure dreams... Hopper, you're so right about referring my downloads to files instead of...other things. I got to thinking about that and was going to ask in my next reply. You must be psychic, answering my question before it's written. I just hope I haven't already blown it, because Big Brother has the internet to watch with now. It bothers me that I can't download a file just for my own pleasure. There's absolutely no money involved and the whole world has been doing it since the invention of the VCR. Oh, and I'm going to copy that link and visit the site. The words Free Downloads are music to my ears. I love thrift shops, too.... As for the issue that started this thread, if I'd had a clue, I would never have upgraded to 30. Too late now, since the older versions of LW don't seem to be available at the site. I just keep grabbing the latest upgrade in hopes that the disconnect/go-to-sleep issues will be fixed. The Ultrapeers on my connections screen seem to have every version of LW from the beginning of time, and very few of them have 4.9.30, 33 or 37. Or are on Pro. Mine disconnected on me twice today, while it was supposedly waking up. I wonder what happens to the folks uploading a large file of mine? Can anyone tell me: am I just one of the "downloading from 10 hosts?" If so, then even if they lose my connection, they don't lose the upload. Right? I'm really disturbed by what's happening to GCDEF and sambucabird. That just isn't right, to have your modem shut completely down, even worse to lose your file. Have you run a search on the system to see if it's stored somewhere, like in a temp folder or something? It isn't even in your incomplete folder? I think I'd do the complete wipe of the program, reg keys and all, and reinstall. As for confusing you with jargon, Sam, remind me what it was you were asking about. I've been walking non-computer people through soft and hardware troubleshooting for nearly 5 years, so I could interpret someone else's steps for you. I'm a low-intermediate computer geek. (The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know.) As for wiping LW off your system and reinstalling it, the reg keys I mentioned earlier are the registration keys and they basically hold your whole system together. I would find a computer geek friend to delete the keys for me, just to make certain I didn't trash everything with one wrong click. I'm going to check out some stuff I downloaded last night--six big files in one night, but my connection was good, and I was on the computer to keep LW from going to sleep. Here's hoping the files are named correctly, not in a furen language, and weren't created from the back seat of a theatre. Happy 'pewting, everyone. |
Rats! Sorry, Hopper, I forgot to mention that I already bought the whole Nero package, back a couple of months when I still had more dollars than sense. I really enjoy it. I got DVDShrink to use first, then use the burning or ripping or whatever it's called portion of it for the final process. So far, I've managed to fail to copy the "big" files to my Plextor drive, but I was using Roxio then. And lately I've been having too much fun watching my files and getting more. Oh, well. Later... |
Hey grand ma ... kind of busy...but got a couplethings want to say...but dont have time....right now...but will post again in an hour or two.. but want to turn you onto an other peice of software i an into on afterdawn...and works real well for free...if you don't have a real good cleaner...reg and windows ....try this... this is a down load link and you will get the down load hitting you in the face....save it then open it....you will want to keep a copy of this... http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp and just below the paypal you will see the free....no adware ore spyware.....check it out works great.... just an old highway tramp ---Bill--- |
Granma.... i am going to pull the plug...been at this machine it seems like days...when its been a little over 40 hours snce i got out of a bed... but seriously when i did a clean install the 37 seems to want to try and work right...and nt trying to tease you but think i got .21 and .23 in a file on my g drive...might have some others around here burnt on cd...have to look...you might start saveing down loads like that to a file....and then burn as data disk...splutge get a few rw and with nero leave open ...dont close you can always add to ....but when you do that only nero will be able to open.. as for the guy who toasted his modem...they do go bad too...let me explain...lightning hit maybe a couple blocks away...i was useing a battery back up with a dls surge ...well that belkin went..and so did the phone line leaveing the battery back up going to my dsl phone...three weeks later had to replace my dsl modem...too... bottom line though most of my trouble on LW quit when i went back to useing the java 1.4 ...as i do have a graphics card...and that made a big differance of how lime worked... anyway grandma i am out of he this morning,,,,catch zzzzzzzz you know icq ....exe files can be shot through.....where on other IM they cant be.....would you beleive i only been playing with this machines not even a year...yet...let me know if you liked that cleaner.....think it wil do the job for you on a clean install....hell its even got a uninstall eng....take care all just an old highway tramp ----Bill--- |
Hi, just wanted to mention that i left my i-tunes playing all day (I think someone said earlier that he left his yahoo radio on all night?) and LW hasn't cut off or gone to sleep and been turbo charged all day! Result! :o) So thanks Grandma for offering to talk me through it but i think prob solved for the time being, I got about 8 days of songs in i-tunes so I can download quite a few movies until it cuts off again............... :o) |
Your wireless laptop question, im your bosssss: It's very do-able, if you have the right hardware on your laptop. Try this link I found at Google. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search It looks like it truncates my link somehow when this reply is posted, so the keywords I used were "wireless internet connections for laptop." There's only about 17 million postings on the subject. I saw $29.95/monthly quoted in the preview on one. It's supposed to be super super fast, but I've also heard it's super expensive, so you'll have to shop around. That quoted price might be a come-on. Sambucabird, I think you've got the right of it. I was trying to think of what program I could pull up that would work fairly steadily on it's own, since LW stays awake when the computer is active. It's a shame we have to go 'round and 'round to find a workaround for LW ourselves. Where are the programmers? Isn't anyone delagated to creating fixes or workarounds on every upgrade? I don't think I've ever run across a perfect upgrade or patch, because it's impossible to test them under every conceivable computer situation. My company, who shall remain nameless, gives us the alpha and beta versions for UAT, customer acceptance testing. Last version upgrade they made us completely wipe our lab systems, replace the harddrive, install Windows fresh,0 and do absolutely nothing to try to break the upgrade (which was always half the fun!) So of course, under those ridiculous conditions the software passed with flying colors. When the customers received it, we found all kinds of install errors and other little nasties like disappearing customer address databases. But 2nd and 3rd level went to work getting our fixes all in a row. I'm confused by LW's attitude toward issues, but since I have no clue how the operation is run, I can't really know what's going on behind that big Oz curtain. So I'll bring up my itunes and set it to play. A very clever idea, by the way! LW has been very bad today about disconnecting every time I turn my back. Hopper: Hope you're getting the rest you need. 40 hours up without chemical stimulation? You should see the coffee I drink-- dark French that I grind myself, (so fine you have to use a paper filter). made one huge mug at a time via a drip cone. It tastes soooo good, but I can drink a whole mug and go straight to sleep. I still haven't been able to appreciate the free download site you sent, but soon...soon. Thank you so much. I was up all night last night, so I'm going to pay a couple of bills online then try to go to sleep. Well, have a brilliant weekend. Talk to you all later. |
Fingers crossed I just installed LW4.9.37,,had the same probs as mentioned here,, I followed the advice,,disabled the ultrapeer thingy, adjusted bandwith bit by bit,,seems ok now:) Last night it was more off than on,so here's hoping ,,thanks for the tips:D |
seriously load one of your players with a play list of songs that will run most of the night and see what that does....might sirprise you.....hey i had to turn my comport down to default ....and turn off hardware acceleration to keep from poping the port...or kicking me off line....its like this i down loaded three complete files last night of over 600 mb each....plus a couple partials... what i am doing is....got my downloads set at three active ...and then a stack the rest up in que...the three useally run above 25 each ....up to 45....when they finish then the others ones pick up...give it a try....and turn on your music.... just an old highway tramp ----Bill--- |
ooooohhhh!a surprise I hate surprises;) Ok i'll give it a go,,see what i can break now:rolleyes: I'll be back,,,,,i hope |
Howdy Sounds like you guys have been having a merry old time while I was gone. I would've drop kicked this computer into the next county if I could avoid foot damage. I was so mad at Norton Internet Security that I practically tore it off my system yesterday, even wiped the registry keys (though when I ran registryfix, it found a bunch more of Symantics under the next key down, not software. Oh, but it was pure joy to not see ccApp chewing up my memory. Oh, and my 512 stick of RAM showed up late yesterday, put it in this evening and I'm now the proud owner of 992 megs of RAM. I'm so stoked, except I need other things to make my system go. And I know that's not much compared to the new systems. I feels good to me anyway. But there's still no joy in Mudville--my Windows Explorer is still striking out. I open any file folder once and Explorer grabs 100% of the cpu usage and will not let it go. I've run every repair I could get, freeware or otherwise and nothing seems to help. Does this mean I need to reinstall Windows? Oh, please say it isn't so! I also put Zone Alarm on my system, and had to fix my floppy drive. I haven't even had a chance to open LimeWire in three days. Does anyone know how to delete a video file that insists it can't delete because someone else is using it? No one is that I can find. I've cold booted, hard booted and restarted my computer 50 times in the last two days Somehow I have to find the "someone" using the file. I've gone everywhere I can think of without joy. Well, glad someone finally figured out a good workaround for LW's narcolepsy. I will continue to bumble around here, trying to find out Win Explorer's issue. Oh, one more weirdness. In Task Manager, I have an executable that seems to be duplicating itself. It started with three, then four and tonight I have six svchost.exes. Three say the system is using them, two say network service and the last one is local service. One of the system svchosts is sucking up 26,440 K of memory, the rest all take up 4 or 5 or 6 thousand K. Checked in Google at some forums, and tracked down all but one, besides the one in System32, where it belongs. I renamed the others. There seems to be a connection between Explorer's problems and too many svchosts. But one guy said that Windows would create more when it needed them, so go figure. Enough of this nonsense. I also found a freeware cdchecker that checks for corruption in video and audio files, because there's also a connection between Explorer and corrupt media files. My videos all checked out fine. Now I have to test the music files. But not tonight. Hope all is well with everyone. Take care. |
not much but fighting with these damn machines like you...been fught with a repair fix for my new printer that came in on friday...aand still couldnt beleive that that damn fix patch wouldnt take....a hp 1600 all in one and the damn thing came from new egg witha bad ink cartridge.....atleast cwill say this much Hp does stand behind there products..as they are shipping me four new ink cartridges to try and make up for the inconveince... well dont know what to say as i do like my norton,,,,hehehe..but i got the full system package.....and use the hell out of my clean sweep....its an over write program ...you understand when you just delete ...all you really did was get rid of the pathway...and not the file itsself....and so far haven't found a file that norton clean sweep woul't overwrite.....or get rid of...let me guess that file your talking about just happens to be what... batman begins or maybe wedding crashers....?? had o couple of them that wouldnt open at all and wouldnt let me go into them and rename the file....as was being accessed by something else...when i get a file that wont play i rename it ,,,original name plus add either delete or wont open for me...then keep the file till i find one that does open or play...that way i dont Dl the same file again.. just a sugestion on explorer...sounds like you may have something in you explorer chache...or an add on running wild...try openning your mannange pluggins and see what all exploere has loaded..top tool bar ...tools and mannange add ons and see what all is loaded to run when you open explorer....try disableing some of them and see what happens.... glad your back kind of messed you.... just an old highway tramp ---Bill-- |
I also just subscibed to this forum because my Limewire PRO 4.9.3.7 is constantly disconnecting after 10-20 mins. I am on Win XP by the way. Running web radio, iTunes or Windows Media Player with music has not helped it keeps on happeneing. I have even emailed support team for LW Pro and have not yet been contacted. |
