i cannot conect, my problem is most likely that i use my college's internet but it is my own computer so there should not be a problem fixing the problem....

Do you have a firewall set up. If you do what is it and do you have it configgured.

felinoel April 7th, 2006 10:59 AM

oh but sadly i am not, and who are you?

birdy April 8th, 2006 08:34 PM

felinoel,
Did you open 2 ports for Gnutella within your Win firewall? I'm only asking because your screenshots show TCP only.
You'll need UDP as well. You'll need to see Gnutella twice on the exceptions page.

The problem is likely to be your school. So many of them block or filter p2p. Are lots of other people at school able to connect to LW? Here's an example

http://www2.iwu.edu/IT/help/helpdesk/shaper.shtml

You could contact your school's computer admin & find out whether they're shaping bandwidth. That way, you find out whether the problem lies with your set up or with the college connection:)

whats the port number for the UDP?

and yes i know for a fact my university lessens the amount of bandwidth i use, sigh is that the problem?

birdy April 10th, 2006 01:10 AM

Port number's the same as you entered for TCP - LW's listening port.

The fact that your school shapes bandwidth could be a big problem. Do other people there use LW without any trouble? If they do, find out what they've done to get connected. You could try changing ports, there's no guarantee it'll work though. LOTR gives some alternative ports here
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ernative+ports

Good luck:)

felinoel April 10th, 2006 05:37 PM

ok using the current port doesnt work and i cant find any other LW user

magic1969 April 30th, 2007 07:16 PM

System details - help us to help you Please.

Cut n paste these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista)
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ?
8. What version,LimeWire & Java,Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
10. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?

These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first!
but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details.

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

Rather than running without a firewall (very silly in my opinion), configure the XP firewall to allow LW.
Firewall setup

Your LW version's pretty ancient. If this is your first try with LW, why are you using such an old version?? There have been heaps of changes in LW since 4.8.1 (that's why you don't see the firewall icon...4.8.1 doesn't show it;))

You could try downloading the latest LW (4.12.11) & see if you can connect. If you do that, it will uninstall your current LW version. If you don't have the 4.8.1 installer saved then you'll lose that version.

Your router has an internal firewall. You could try port forwarding, here are the instructions.
Port Forwarding for the Linksys WRT54GC

Don't forget the step of setting up a static IP address. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router all have to be the same number.

You might try deleting "gnutella" files then let limewire create a new gnutella file. This worked for me. good luck.

I Might Have One Solution

Hi. I am running the latest version of Limewire Pro. I installed it and everything was fine, but I also couldn't seem to get connected. I went through the Options and at the bottom under advanced, there was an option to let you pick the network card. I have VMware Workstation installed on this box and Limewire was defaulting to the VM Virtual NIC. I set it to manually look at the physical NIC of the box and bang...off it went.

That might be an option you want to check out.

digdeep November 28th, 2007 01:37 AM

This solution worked for me i had the same problem ,limewire couldnot connect.
Download this file gnutella.net.net

and copy it to c:Documents and settings-user name-Application data-Limewire!
Delete original file gnutella.net!
Restart Limewire!
Wait a minute so limewire connects to net! It worked for me!

p.m:if limewire still cannot connect try to rename downloaded gnutella.net.net to gnutella.net

digdeep November 28th, 2007 01:48 AM

Try the fixes in the post below.
If LW Will Not Connect

You can also try changing ports. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config, change LW's listening port to 65000 (or anything in the range of 49152 - 65535) > apply > ok.

How did you uninstall LW? If you did it via Add/Remove programs (or the Vista equivalent) that's the wrong way & can cause problems. Open Task Manager & check whether there's a LW process running...if there is, end the process.

Try reinstalling now. If it still doesn't work, use your computer's search to look for all files & folders with LW in the name & delete what you find. If you've changed LW's saved folder from the default location, & are saving files to a folder with limewire in the name...careful that you don't delete that saved folder & lose your downloads!

Restart your computer & see whether LW will install now.
