do you think if i removed all the norton stuff completely from my computer it would help? i still have it free for 55 days but i dont want it if its gonna do this

wondering why January 11th, 2007 12:17 PM

You could do that, I initially had Norton and when it ran out I just got one of the free AV's that many recommend in this forum...
I have this one, try it to start with and we can discuss alternatives a bit later...

wondering why January 11th, 2007 12:18 PM

Oh and make sure you totally remove Norton...

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 02:21 PM

ok i went to star, control panel, add remove programs, and removed it there, is that completly removing it?

birdy January 11th, 2007 02:25 PM

Use your computer's search to look for Norton & Symantic...you might find a few things still hanging around.

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 02:38 PM

k thanks birdy

birdy January 11th, 2007 08:49 PM

jimbo-ice,
Do you by any chance have the NetSafe security package as part of your Atlantic Broadband service (see the link below)?
http://atlantic.highspeed.com/

That also has a firewall. I'm running out of ideas here:o
You could search your comp for NetSafe...see if anything shows up. Or have a look on your documents from your ISP, you might find some info to tell you whether you have that package.

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:04 PM

ok ill check, um i emailed atlantic broadband earlier to see what they had to say about blocking it heres what they say..."P2P connections are being throttled thru our network.....during peak hours you may not be able to connect"

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:08 PM

I just searched NetSafe and got no results, cool, I have to be doing something wrong, I cant be the only one on here with this bad of a problem (where you guys start running out of ideas) lol

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:13 PM

forgot to mention, I did a system recovery thing earlier and when it asks what type of internet I had I put DSL, I think last time I put LAN, i rally dont have a clue what it is but the way they described dsl sounded more like cable then the LAN did, also, when i was supposed to put in my ip address and all that I left it blank.... I was lost bigtime by this time, maybe that has something to do with Limewire and other P2p connections?

Well, that's a bit of help. Now you know they're interfering & that would explain why your port 6346 test didn't work (if they're blocking ports too). Does your friend that uses Atlantic & has no problem have a different speed/connection or type of account than you do?

Did they say what they classify as peak hours?

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:23 PM

no lol, all they said what what i copy and pasted, but anyways, my buddy has atlantic broadband but a differert modem, his is bigger, and like an off white color, dont know the name tho, is there somewhere I could show u which one online somewhere? I dont know about his speed/connection.

PS. the funny thing is when i was at his house he only has windows firewall i think and it was turned on and he had limewire as an exception.. but on limewire there was no wall in front of the globe, mines the exact opposite, that why I think something may have happened to my modem when we had that power surge thing, he lost an xbox360 but nothing happened to his computer, i was on the computer at the time (which i dont think would help) and it pretty much toasted my old computer, everything except the monitor and speakers, my modem has all the lights on but, i just have a hard time believing that 2 days after we had the power surge my isp decides to block the port or watever, when on my old, slower computer it worked :(

birdy January 11th, 2007 09:38 PM

Ask him to look on the modem (underneath too) & tell you the brand name plus the model number. Is there any way that you could borrow the modem for a little while & see if things work for you then? You might have to bribe him:p

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:44 PM

heh ya im sure he will let me use it, for a little while lol, but can this happen though? like something inside messed up with completly frieing it? because i can still use it to connect to the internet and all the light work fine :-\

birdy January 11th, 2007 09:56 PM

I would've thought that if it was working for internet, it would be ok but I'm no expert! The idea of switching modems was kind of a last resort:o There's no firewall in yours anyway. Have you been right through control panel & also looked in your system tray for all security programs that might have a firewall?
Have you tried turning off the XP firewall, just for a very short time, since you deleted Norton?

Have you tried installing one of the older versions since you deleted Norton?

I'm stumped. Someone else might have more ideas. If you had a laptop, you could take it to someone else's house (who uses a different ISP) & try to connect.

Sorry...

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 10:11 PM

lol ya i tried pretty much all that

wondering why January 11th, 2007 11:28 PM

Ok back to the ISP throttling the connection....What plan are you on....And is it unlimited or do you get a monthly quota to use ?? What does your mate have ??....Is your mate also cable or is he dsl...What brand and model modem does he have ??

jimbo-ice January 12th, 2007 06:45 AM

ok guys, i tried to make a dialup thing so I can see if my modem is beat, I made one but I cant cconnect to it, but... the brickwall was just gone in front of the globe and i had 5 green bars, but it was downloading at dialup speed (i still have my cable modem hooked up because I couldnt connect to the internet because i didnt set my ddialup right) down by the clock, it said AOL-Not connected even though I was signed in, and when I was it seemed to fix the problem, but I loged out and in and now its not working agaain lol

jimbo-ice January 12th, 2007 07:40 AM

ok now i got 5 green bars, no brick wall and im downloading a song, but only at 5kbps :( I still have cable internet open, all I did was make a dial up conenction, now when i scroll over the aol internet thing it says AOL-Connection Available, im not sure what to do, because downloading at 5kbps is rough, but better then nothing :) Oh yea, and is there a way to cancel a aol name thing, because I made 2 for some reason

jimbo-ice January 12th, 2007 09:30 AM

does anyone why it did this? im paying for cable internet (ands it on) but when i made this aol dial up thing, its like now its always on dialup (internet, limewire, everything is dialup speed)

birdy January 12th, 2007 02:26 PM

Try this (don't kill me if it doesn't work):

Start > connect to > your ISP > properties > advanced > now untick the box to 'establish a dial up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the internet' > ok.

See if that fixes it. Otherwise, someone else will have to step in:o

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:07 AM

ok im back lol, of course nothing works for me for some reason, but anyways i just did a search of "firewall" on my computer and i found a lot of resutls and it wouldnt let me delete a few, it said somethiing about not being able to read the disk or something?

birdy January 13th, 2007 12:12 AM

Awwww man...I was hoping you'd fixed it:cryinghysterical:
Do you get any program names when you search for firewalls? Can you take a screenshot of your search results (might give a clue to someone)?
Did you get the dial up off?
Did you ever find out if Atlantic has a backup dial up service & if so, did you try that?

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:20 AM

umm i think i got rid of the dial up, i dont know how to take screen shots and im having my dad call atlantic broadband tommorow so , looks like i just struck out lol ill take a screen shot if u want, but you have to tell me how

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:22 AM

o ya the one firewall on the list was related to the adobe thing, i didnt know what that was but i removed it all from my computer, under type it said something like "block file sharing"

birdy January 13th, 2007 12:30 AM

Forget about the screenshot for now, wait & see what Atlantic say.
You've done a great job with all this & have been really patient, I hope that there's a way to get LW working for you:)

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:34 AM

hope so, I tested my buddys modem over here earlier and it had the same problem as mine

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:36 AM

the one firewall on this list is a peoplePC firewall, i open it and it has 11 options to click on, i might just delete it all

birdy January 13th, 2007 12:47 AM

PeoplePC's an ISP:confused:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeoplePC

I guess you can delete all that stuff if you're not going to use them to connect.

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:51 AM

ya thats what im wondering, theres no trace of anything people pc ont his computer except when i search firewalls :-\ all this people pc stuff is in afolder called "bin" lol dont know if thats normal

jimbo-ice January 13th, 2007 12:55 AM

argh, i new something would happen.. i can delete all 12 or 13 things except one..its called

PPShared
PPShared Module
People PC

when i try to delete that i get an error report, that says.. "cannot delete PPShared: access denied. make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use"

jimbo-ice January 14th, 2007 06:24 PM

Immm baaaack lol, still not fixed either, I dont know what to do now, im out of idea, and you guys are too, do you think it could just be this computer not allowing these type of things to connecct?

birdy January 14th, 2007 06:31 PM

What did Atlantic say?

jimbo-ice January 14th, 2007 11:47 PM

they didnt say anything helpful, they said it might be a problem with limewire

jimbo-ice January 15th, 2007 02:14 AM

I was just looking at windows firewall exceptions, and i noticed the last thing down was upnp framework, i see you guys talking about this upnp on here sometimes, now the box is checked, but its also a dark grey box, not white, any ideas on this? o ya and atalantic broadband said that i should get this people pc and earthlink off my computer (and any others isps i guess, not sure how to find them though, i found those 2 on accident)

bettasai January 15th, 2007 02:29 AM

limewire via proxy ???

First of all I want to say Happy New Year 2007, hope god bless us always...

I have Limewire 4.12.6 installed in my computer, previously, I have nothing matter bout the connection, I've succesfully downloaded more than 200 songs and thats make me love this program so much... , for information I am using my office connection, until bout a week ago, my office administrator change the internet connection setting using proxy (well I dont know that mean), it said that we should use proxy server with 10.xxx.xx.xx and port 80xx in internet option (I just thinking that I will using a difference connection with previously). As well as I change the setting, my limewire just said do not detect any connection in my computer until this day, and when I restored to previous setting, it doesn't work either... I want to know whether there is a special configuration using limewire via proxy , please ? thank u

wondering why January 15th, 2007 02:47 AM

bettasai it would be best if you started your own thread as this one is a complicated one and things will get even more confusing...

wondering why January 15th, 2007 03:58 AM

1 Attachment(s)
jimbo-ice mine is still white, have you also ticked the box Windows Peer to Peer grouping...

Attachment 3340

Have you thought of backing up all your important stuff and doing a complete system reformat...It will probably get rid if those other ISPs on your system..
Check with your Dad and see if he agrees...

jimbo-ice January 15th, 2007 01:37 PM

i dont have windows peer to peer group :(

jimbo-ice January 15th, 2007 11:51 PM

uh, Im finally about to give up on this, it seems that nothing is going to work :(. do you guys think it could just be my computer not allowing things like limewire and kaaza through? i have the hp media center edition 2005 if that helps, I dont know what else to do

jimbo-ice January 16th, 2007 12:02 AM

ya i tried doing a system recovery, and it didnt delete those isps

Lord of the Rings January 16th, 2007 12:15 AM

Incomplete Download File won't delete at all (click on link). This link has some programs listed to help delete files that refuse to delete.
You might want to clean the registry up a bit too: http://www.ccleaner.com/
It will help get rid of files that aren't needed anymore such as old version registry files that are sometimes left behind.

jimbo-ice January 16th, 2007 01:40 AM

i installed the ccleeaner but it didnt seem to do anytihng to help limewire run

wondering why January 16th, 2007 02:30 AM

Just hang tight, we have been advised that some security apps have added things to their updates and apparently allowing a p2p app as an exception doesn't make a difference... we are just waiting to hear back from a member on the fix for this...Don't give up hope yet...btw did we tell you how wonderful you have been through all of this, you have the patience of a saint...:xeri_ok1ani:

Bigpaul January 16th, 2007 01:32 PM

looking forward to a fix here. Im having the same probs.:bangh:

jimbo-ice January 16th, 2007 08:20 PM

ok, i just tried opening limewire and i got a fatal error that said something about a corrupt installation? anyone know what this is about? and bigpaul hopefully this thread will help fix our problems, atleast im not alone lol

jimbo-ice January 16th, 2007 08:51 PM

ugh, just restarted and i didnt get the corrupt installation message, its still not working though :(

jimbo-ice January 16th, 2007 09:03 PM

now it wont even take me to the main page when i click the limewire icon, this is frusturating

Lord of the Rings January 16th, 2007 09:25 PM

In that case, try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) It might also be worth reinstalling LW (but use the "Offline" installer.) Perhaps removing some of those security apps has affected LW negatively somehow.
