Cant Connect (no matter what I do)

Ok, I decided to make a new thread because I felt the other was a little confusing . Here is my problem, I downloaded LimeWire on my new pc and after I click the icon, it fails to connect, I get and error message that says..."Your machine does not appear to have an active Internet connection or a firewall is blocking LimeWire from accessing the internet. LimeWire will automatically keep trying to connect you to the network unless you select "Disconnect" from the File menu". Now Im on the internet so I ruled the active internet connection, this left me with the firewall, now I been reading through these thread and tried some of the stuff and it still dont work (I tried configuring firewalls, turning firewalls off, reinstalling LimeWire, pretty much everything). Right now I have windows firewall off and LimeWire is an exception. My Norton Internet Security 2006 (which came pre installed on this pc) person firewall has LimeWire as "permit all". This is where I get 100% confused because im sure my modem or router or whatever its called doesnt have a built in firewall (someone pointed it out on my old thread), My isp lets LimeWire through (just last week I had LimeWire installed on my old pc and it ran with the same isp, modem, etc), and I configured/turned off my current firewalls (that I know of) to let LimeWire through, so Im wondering, why that error which I listed above comes up no matter what I do :bangh: ? Im not the smartest person in the world when it comes to computers so be easy on my with the words :o.

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows XP
2. What firewalls you have? 2 that I know of, Windows and the Norton Internet Security 2006 one. Could there be one that I dont know of thats messing my LimeWire up?
3. How much ram? 960MB
4. Hard Disk space available? No idea
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorolla SB5120 SURFboard Cable Modem
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? House
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LimeWire 4.12.6 Java 1.5.0_10
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Atlantic Broadband
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Your test worked!
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. Not sure :o
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I had LimeWire on my old pc for a few months and it ran perfect, so experienced user, new problem
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes

wondering why January 10th, 2007 10:27 PM

One of the last ditch efforts here lol...Are you using the connections patch for SP2...If not download this patch and see if it helps...
http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads#4226patch

If this doesn't work maybe using an earlier version of limewire could fix it...

PS...you are doing really well with all of this...we will try to get to the bottom of this yet...

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 10:29 PM

how can I find out if im using it or not?

wondering why January 10th, 2007 10:33 PM

Just download it...Make sure you have a suitable program like WinZip to extract it....

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 10:37 PM

ok it says it is recommended to extract all, thats what I did

wondering why January 10th, 2007 10:37 PM

excellent...

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 10:38 PM

What do I extract files to? this is confusing me lol, im in the extraction wizard, should I just extract them to the folder thats already in there box?

wondering why January 10th, 2007 10:40 PM

Put it into your programs folder...

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 10:45 PM

ok, I see the 3 things now, the changelog-en, the homepage, and EvID4226 Patch, Do I click on one of them or?

wondering why January 10th, 2007 10:46 PM

Click on the EvID4226 Patch...

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 10:48 PM

I see a black screen with all kinds of computer mamba jumba on it

wondering why January 10th, 2007 10:52 PM

Just hang on and wait...

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 10:53 PM

okeydokey, another thing I just thought of.. when I first downloaded LimeWire for the first time I had dial up, and then switched to cable internet whist it was on my computer, do you think since I downloaded it with cable I could have screwed something up?

birdy January 10th, 2007 10:58 PM

jimbo-ice,
if the lvllord patch isn't working you could try this microsoft one, I used it when I had connection problems with SP2

http://support.microsoft.com/default...5bLN%5d;884020

Where is the black screen coming from???

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:02 PM

ok ill try it, then black screen says "this prgram is in development, please visit http://www.LvlLord.de for a new version" a few lines down, not sure what u mean when u ask where its comming from, it comes up when i clicked the EvID4226 Patch thing

birdy January 10th, 2007 11:03 PM

Did you ever try changing port numbers? You'd have to change LW's listening port & any specific port numbers you've allowed thru a software firewall...port numbers should be the same.

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:06 PM

ahh after i downloaded the microsoft one an error came up saying my windows did not match it or something, I tried changing port but not sure if I did it right, ya I tried downloading something my one friend has i think it was called bearshare or sharebear and it didnt work either, it couldnt connect

This is a screenshot of mine....

Attachment 3328

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:13 PM

ok my top number is 46524 and the bottom one is 6346, and the option "use UPnP (recommended)" is checked

birdy January 10th, 2007 11:20 PM

They have to be the same number;)
Just try changing to manual port forward & use port 46524, so it's the same as your listening port, press Apply to save the change. It possibly won't work (sorry) but it has worked for a few people who dont actually have manual port forwarding set up thru a router. You've got nothing to lose by trying! Give it 5 minutes to settle down & see if it connects.

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:25 PM

ok I made them both the same number and of course it dont work (my luck) I remember reading somewhere when u change port numbers you have to do it for the firewall too, if so how do i do that?

wondering why January 10th, 2007 11:28 PM

Turn Norton off for a minute and see if that helps...

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:30 PM

ok im trying it now

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:32 PM

still doesnt want to connect :(

I dont know if this means anything but under norton person firewall, configure, programs, when i scroll down to limewire the icon looks a little dull

jimbo-ice January 10th, 2007 11:58 PM

Another thing I dont understand is my norton firewall "learns" limewire, shouldnt this mean its allowed to connect ?

Im going to sleeep guys, if you figure anything at all out please post it, another day with no success :-(

birdy January 11th, 2007 12:04 AM

Try the old version & reconfigure Norton, otherwise we'll put your problem to the gurus.

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 03:24 AM

ok im back

OK I just downloaded the 4.9.30 version of limewire, and it dont connect, but im not getting that error message about not having an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking limewire from accessing the network anymore :), I made both ports in the firewall config the same number, checked the manual port forward box, made it "permit all" on norton firewall, windows firewall is off, Im wondering if theres maybe something in internet options or somewhere in norton that i have to check or uncheck something to let it allow these kind of things (p2p I think they called) because I tried downloading something my friend had last night (bearshare) and it has the same problem as limewire, connecting

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 05:07 AM

hmmm another thing i just noticed, but on aol instant messenger theres a firewall option under preferences, theres also a file sharing boxes, I dont understand but if i remember right, on the old computer i downloaded limewire before aol, on this one i did the opposite downloading aol first, i dont know, if anyone else knows anything about this, please post

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 06:03 AM

I might know exactly whats wrong but cant figure out how to fix it, i just uninstalled aol, unistalled limewire, then did limewire first (4.12.6) and down on my task bar every now and then 2 computer screen pop up wuth a red x through them, when i go to move ove rthem they disappear. I have no idea what these are but im sure you guys do, but I checked my netowrk connections, I had 2 options to choose (1394 connection, and Local Area Connection, they dont have anything under meath them now, I remember they used to say stuff like connected, firewalled. etc. but thats all gone) So i chose 'status' of them both because thats the only place i saw those 2 computers before and on the 1394 connection status window it says connected but the 2 computers at the bottom are all grey I remember these being blue before. On the Local Area connection 'status' window it also says connected but the 2 computers never stay all blue they tend to each go blue at random times on and off, just as I was typin this, it said I had to repair that one twice...im guessing thats why the red x on the computers keeps popping up in the task bar, and could this be the problem, if so how to fix it? and ya dont know if this helps but..the 1394 'speed' says 400.0 Mbps and the Local Area connection 'speed' says 100.0 Mbps

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 06:38 AM

ok now its says connected under them both again lol so weird, ill be back in a few hours to check to see if you guys have any more answers lol

Dark Guy January 11th, 2007 07:41 AM

Norton is obsessive security...

Norton is known by being obsessively worried about security, so, it could be blocking P2P traffic no matter what, i suggest you to move to another suite/firewall dude...

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 08:58 AM

ok umm could i just remove it from my pc? it came free for 60 days, my old computer only had windows firewall and limewire worked

hai...i'm duncan from malaysia...
i also have a same problem like u....i had tried all the thread in this forum but all can't work....:bangh:
i hope we can find out wat the problem & solve tis problem....

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:09 AM

I know this is 100% frusturating

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 09:30 AM

Norton is fussy, & you need to reconfigure it for each version of LW. See Reconfiguring Norton Firewall.

Using your browser (try using Internet Explorer) type this into your address bar http://192.168.0.1 & tell us what happens.
That should be the telnet address for your Motorola SB5120. Do you get a log-in page?

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 09:49 AM

its says thispage cannot be displayed :(

so what should I do? I cant view that page, and i just tried a 'program scan on limewire in norton personal firewall, at the end where u can set how u want them (automatic, block all, permit all) I dont even see limewire here, I see in in the first one though

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 10:07 AM

Downld this program Phex to see if you have the same problems.

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 10:12 AM

ok i am now

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 10:13 AM

do u know why that red x keeps on flashing over my locan area connection in my connection?

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 10:18 AM

ok its downloaded, i have that list up all of them are either connecting or error connecting, everyone of them says out

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 10:52 AM

So you can't connect to Phex either! Not good!!! Says something about either your setup or your ISP.
But give Phex time, it can take some time on occasions to connect. You'll see in the bottom left corner how many peers you're connected to. On the connections page, peers connected to will be listed in green. ;)

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 10:56 AM

still no connections :(

i dont understand how it would be my isp, i was just over my friends house this morning he has the same one and i tested limewire onhis pc

another thing, we had someone get in a car accident here and hit some telephone poles, it fried alot of things (tvs, game systems, computers, my old computer) do u think that could have something to do with it? i mean... i can connect to the internet but maybe something messed up inside my modem for p2p?

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 11:12 AM

Perhaps as suggested by another member, check your friend's setup & see what difference there is between yours & theirs. I'm not sure the reason for your problem. I presume you have all other utilities such as spyware, etc. allowing permission for LW.
BTW ISP's have been known to only apply filters or shapers to individuals. Have you ever been able to connect to LW? Do you use games that play over the internet & do they work ok?

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 11:16 AM

yai havent been able to connect to any p2p on this computer, i can play games

umm you said about spyware allowing limewire, I dont know if i have any spyware lol

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 11:20 AM

Ok then, check your friends set up out, then see if you can apply the same to yours. If no success, let us know. I'll get an earlier version LW to you & see if you can connect with that one.

Spyware programs meaning anti-spyware & anti-adware, etc. Does your ISP offer you any special security for connecting to the internet?

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 11:23 AM

well when i went to his house everything looked the same i didnt know where all to look, i checked the firewall and his was on and it still worked, he has windows firewall

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 11:24 AM

Have you tried connecting with both Norton & XP firewall turned off? I don't normally recommend it but it's worth a try to find out whether that's the issue.

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 11:26 AM

ya i tried, it said theres still a firewall blocking it

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2007 11:45 AM

Check your personal messages & follow the advice carefully. That must be done if the suggestion is to have any chance at succeeding. ;) :)

jimbo-ice January 11th, 2007 12:05 PM

ok i did it and its dont wanna connect lol, i hate computers :(
