Connection Problems Problems getting the LimeWire or WireShare program connecting to the Gnutella network.

![]() Feel like I have exhausted every avenue to resolve my problem with dropped/lost connection to LW over last two weeks I have had PRO version. Some details: Windows XPSP2 operating system; firewall in XP has been turned off; 256 ram and Intel Pentium 111 1GHz; hardrive: 11 gb in internal drive and 169 gb available in external drive; DSL; modem: Actiontec DSL Gatewa, no router; connected from house; LW PRO 4.12.10 and Java 2 Standard Edition (just downloaded J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 upon automatic update notice this morning); Olypen.com is ISP, they do not block p2p's, 'My test worked!'; Have some unused uTorrent files hanging around still but uninstalled that program as too confusing pre-LW experience; 2 weeks of diligently trying to resolve this; and, yes, despite turning XP firewall off still see a brick wall in front of globe. Problem: Sometimes LW will open and run for a few hours w/o incident but in time fails. Error window says "..machine does not have an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking LW from access to the internet." I have tried everything I can think of. Saw system error ID 4226 so have run the 4226 on-line fix. Connection still dropped after a few hours or as soon as in a minute or two everytime. Tried manual patch and same problem persisted. Patch seems ok but it did not fix the problem. Limit still holding at 1000. Tried troubleshooting and found no tcpip.sys files that matched ALL 3 date/time/size so not sure that rest of troubleshooting suggestions apply. In reading some of the posts re: same problem it is suggested to add an exception for the gnutella port. I can't even stay connected long enough currently to access this option from within LW. Perhaps my answer is in these posts but I can't sort it out. Enough information? Little too much? Tried to not overload but per sugestions of as much info as possible would be helpful..........Hope someone can help. I'm running out of patience and am about to trashcan the whole thing. ![]() AFAIK the Actiontec DSL Gateway has a firewall. http://www.actiontec.com/products/br...eway/index.php There are a few different Gateways...can you find a model number? If it supports UPnP, enable it within the device & choose the UPnP option within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Apply > ok. Otherwise you could try port forwarding, that should get rid of the firewall icon. Find your model here & then choose LW from the list of programs. That will give you step by step instructions for port forwarding. http://www.portforward.com/english/r...outerindex.htm If setting up a static IP is part of the instructions, don't miss that step or port forwarding won't work. ![]() Thanks for your speedy responses birdy and wondering. You are giving me some hope and encouragement. We'll start w/the Actiontec Model # R1524SU And remember, at this point I can't keep LW open long enough to get in to the tools>options> etc. to configure the port forwarding. As I recall I did that with my ISP's assistance, setting incoming and outgoing to same port at some time in these last 2 weeks. He said if we knew what it was we could do that. I googled LW port and came up with 6346. I'd like to check that if we can do it outside of LW (can't remember how we got there and my isp is getting tired dealing with an issue that isn't really their thing. Like to leave them out of the loop if possible for time being.) Thanks |

![]() Delete LW's preferences folder (make sure there's no LW process running in task manager). If you've only used recent versions of LW, point 3 below has the instructions. If you've used older versions (prior to 4.10) then check point 2's location as well. Fixes for LimeWire See if doing that will at least let you open LW to get in & change ports etc ![]() |

![]() Hi birdy, wondering. Just don't seem to be having any luck. Following suggestion of L of the L deleted .limewire folder. Interesting, took me back thru the setup process again. Continuing with Actiontec instructions from you I got to port configuration part when connection to LW failed and I had to close out everything. Unplug/replug dsl, pain in the butt. The 'Listen on port' box would not let me change current setting of 51279 to match manual port forward #6346 but could type it in to the box below that and proceeded to type in ip addresses. Got an Actiontec congratulations window just as LW connection failed yet again. Apparently Basic Setup was sufficient. Port Range, Protocol, and IP Address box were already filled in so assumed everything worked except ability to change the 'listen on port' setting as mentioned above. Rebooted everything and LW got hung up on Locating Peers and disconnected. Also, when I open tools>options my listen on port # is 6346 and matches manual port forward. Was thinking I'm there without advanced setup. But it doesn't matter, it still wouldn't work. In fact I totally lost my internet connection from my computer. After several more reboots was unable to get online at all. Called Quest (my dsl provider) this AM and they had to reconnect me from there end and then I had to call my ISP to have them "push credentials" to modem on this user end. DSL is at its lowest setting and there is no fire wall. Had done a system restore at some point to get back behind all this bull*, downloaded 4226 patch again because I noted an error ID #4226 at time of disconnect and reset the limit to 1000 again. Also, uninstalled my Spyware just in case there was a conflict there. After all this my connection is still failing within one or two minutes. Feel like it has all been a waste of time and money and about ready to forget it. Wodering if I could purge all of it and system restore back to pre-purchase time. Start from scratch. LW would remember my login w/email address so could download again. Not sure it is worth it anymore. Getting burned out. Emails to LW two weeks ago have never been responded to. Don't want to be wasting everyone elses time but just don't know what to do. Micheal |

![]() Have to be patient with the folks trying to help out in here. You are all going above and beyond the call of duty. Have not received a reply to my post of the 10th. (Guess I am impatient.that's only two days ago!) Anyway, if no one can think of any other fixes to try I am wondering about the delete it all LW option and starting from scratch. Get all potential fixes and settings in place before I even download it again. OK, I'll kick back here a bit longer. Hope to be hearing some more helpful suggestions. Micheal |

![]() Hey mykeel, Sorry nobody's got back to you sooner...sometimes takes a while. Have you found out whether your router supports UPnP? If it does, enable it & use the UPnP option on LW's firewall config page & apply to save the change. I don't know why you had so much trouble with port forwarding & why you weren't able to change LW's listening port ![]() Turn on your XP firewall & configure it to allow LW Firewall setup Did you try those other tips in my first post about reducing the drag caused by LW? You could also see whether using Java 1.6 makes any difference. Use the offline JRE installer here & remove your current Java version before you install the new one. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Otherwise...I'm a bit stumped ![]() |
