Default Same issue as everyone - no connection

For some reason, my LW just seemed to stop working. We didn't add any new programs to our computer, it just seemed to stop working. So here are my details (this is gonna be long):

1. OS version? Windows XP on x86
2. What firewalls you have? Windows, Norton
3. How much ram? 512
4. Hard Disk space available? 52.7 GB
5. Connection type? Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem: Motorola SB5101 Router: NetGear WGR614
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Home
8. What version of LimeWire & Java do you have? LW 4.12.11 Java 1.5.0_11
9. Who is your ISP provider? Shaw
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Page said, “Your test worked!”
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. This is a new problem with a previous user of LW
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Absolutely

Bug reports:
Is Connected: False
Received incoming this session: False
Port Stable: False

I uninstalled Limewire, manually removed it from Norton and Windows firewall exceptions list, re-installed Limewire.

Norton Firewall – Limewire is set as an exception.

Windows Firewall – Limewire is set as an exception.

Shaw does permit P2P, although one of the stickys notes that it has been reported Shaw may cap bandwidth at times.

I completely shutdown LW, deleted my whole LimeWire preferences directory, restarted LW. When I did this I got the message that my computer does not appear to have an Internet Connection (it does) or a firewall is blocking LW from accessing the Internet.

I can’t remember where I saw it in the forums, but there was mention of ports. I tried adding port 7301 (according to the Bug reports, that is the port LW is operating on) to my Norton firewall exception but that did nothing. (Or I could be totally out to lunch on this port idea because I know nothing about ports).

Anyone have any ideas?

For starters, don't run Win firewall & Norton firewall together!! Turn off the Win & reconfigure Norton to allow LW.

How do you have your router set up (UPnP enabled, port forwarded or neither)?

I disabled the Windows firewall and LW is working again. Thank you very much!

The funny thing is, though, it was off when LW originally went down (I know because I turned it back on as I was trying to figure things out). I wonder why that happened?

Also, not that I really need it now, but how would I determine how my router is set up ((UPnP enabled, port forwarded or neither)?

I just did a quick "What's New" search to see if LW was working. I did get results but I keep getting the message that my computer does not appear to have an Internet Connection (it does) or a firewall is blocking LW from accessing the Internet.

Do I need to worry about this or anything else still?

Your router has an internal firewall...that's probably why you're getting the message about a firewall blocking LW. That's why I asked you whether you had UPnP enabled or a port forwarded...one of these options should get rid of your firewall icon.

If your router supports UPnP, enable it within the router & choose the UPnP option within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Then Apply > ok.

Or you could try port forwarding. Check below for instructions.
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...4/Limewire.htm

Don't forget to set up a static IP address first (there's a link for this within those instructions). And remember...the port forwarded, LW's listening port & the number in the 'manual port forward' box have to all be the same number

If you choose to do nothing (ie no UPnP or port forward), your firewall icon will probably remain & you could have trouble getting good search results. Also, chances are that very few people will be able to download from you...so you won't be sharing your files

LW isn't really working again. I am not getting any search results whatsoever.

My router does support UPnP. It is enabled. The UPnP option is chosen in LW as well.

Now I am constantly getting the message that "LW is currently connecting to the network. Your search results may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network."

Directly followed by the error message, "Your machine does not appear to have an active Internet connection or a firewall is blocking LW from accessing the internet. LW will automatically keep trying to connect you to the network unless you select 'Disconnect' from the File menu."

The firewall icon remains as well.

Reconfigure your Norton firewall
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...10&postcount=6

If that's no help, try port forwarding (see the link in my earlier post).

I tried reconfiguring my Norton firewall, as per the linked instructions. That didn't work.

I tried port forwarding, that didn't help either.

I also tried putting my fist through the monitor. Surprisingly that was of no help.

Any other advice I might be able to try. I just don't get why it works sometimes, usually when I make the initial changes as per instructed, but then it goes back to not working.

The ol' 'fist thru the monitor' isn't a recommended fix

I don't know why port forwarding's not working. Did you have the option to save & reboot your router after setting things up? Did you make sure that all port numbers were the same within the router & within LW's options? After you set up port forwarding, did the firewall icon disappear at all (even for a little while)?

Sorry, been a way for a while. Crazy busy at work you know. Any hoodle...

May be I screwed up the port forwarding. I tried again and it did not work.

I did just realize that a new program was installed on my computer. My fiancée's sister had some type of MP3 player and they installed the "software" that came with it to transfer the files. It is an RCA Lyra (???) and there was the Yahoo! Music Engine installed. I removed this.

Also, I have bit torrent as well and that appears to be working, although very slowly. I know I could use this to share files, but I find LW much faster (when it is working) for audio files.

Any more ideas, other than using my machine as an anchor once the snow melts here.

Are you trying to use BT & LW together? Just run one at a time. Change your LW port to 64049 & see if that helps. Also change the port forwarded to 64049.

Did you make sure to set up a static IP address before port forwarding?

Are you port forwarding for BT?

There are some helpful hints about alternative uses for your computer here

If yours is a desktop, I'm sure you could adapt some of these ideas to suit!!!

We could use some snow here in Perth right now.
