I think that the Optus guys are getting confused about the static IP address. You don't need to lose your normal dynamic IP. All you're trying to do is set up a static IP so that your router can recognise your computer & port forwarding works.

Wondering Why (one of the mods here) had a shouting match with Optus recently about exactly the same thing Once she explained that she just wanted to port forward, they ended up giving her the info she needed. Send her a PM (click on the blue link with her name) & she'll be able to give you more info

Hi Roger,
I received your pm and the DNS server numbers I had where for Brisbane...
This is what I said to Optus customer support, so they would tell me the numbers...
I stated that the modem/router had a Nat Firewall and that I needed to open a port to let World of Warcraft through the firewall (as they may not like you saying you want it for limewire )...Customer service will have no idea what you are talking about, so you need to ask for the supervisor and tell him/her that by law they have to tell you these numbers and if they don't and your son cant play world of warcraft because of their Internet connection that you will cancel the contract and see them in court...

Don't say anything about the staic IP they just don't get it...
Just state that you want the prefered DNS number as well as the alternate number..

Thanks so much for the very detailed reply. I shall call Optus (and join the long queue for tech support) and see how I get on. With the knowledge of how you set about getting the DNS server numbers, I feel more confident. thanks again,

Hi,

I am most grateful to those who have kindly responded to my requests for help. I am now gambling on my Norton Ghost image getting me out of trouble if I mess things up completely!

I have still been unsuccessful in getting a DNS address from Optus but have used what I believe to be correct numbers for Melbourne. I can still get on to the internet, so is this undeniable proof that I have correct numbers here? I am guessing that if I had them wrong I would NOT be able to get online. Is this correct??

Assuming that I am correct, I continued to change my Internet Connections Properties for TCP/IP (so that I now have a static IP address,) and then uninstalled all traces of Java and downloaded and installed JRE 5 Update 12. Please see my attached screenshots.

I have set my router to allow the ports I believe to be right and am attaching a third screen shot showing these.

Can anyone see anything I have wrong as it is still not alooowing me to connect.

I found this...
DNS Numbers
So your DNS numbers look fine..

Now with what I can see with the ports....
I would use the number 64049 for TCP and that number for UDP, you should only use the one number...

When your in Limewire use 64049 for the manual port forward box and the listen number box and select apply...

That should get the wall away..

Time is getting away from me so I will probably not have a chance to try again until tomorrow, but am hopeful that if you think I am on the right track, I will be OK. If not, I might just have to give up!!
