![]() I was using 4.14 before(think this was the version) on WinXP Pro SP2 w/no problems(LW didnt show the firewall icon). The newer version I installed(4.16.3) shows the firewall icon, but LW works(is running on port 4269 automatically). Theres no Preferences folder anymore. Did they do away with this? Also, there was no Gnutella file that came with the newer version. No big deal on that, as I have a 22k one I got about 15 mins ago. Not really complaining, just wondering what happened to the Preferences folder with this newer version, and why does LW work fine when it shows the firewall icon(& why is that icon there in the first place?). Weird... |

![]() Voidtek, Try uninstalling your 4.16.3 (start > all programs > LW > uninstall). Now download that version again & make sure to use the offline installer...when you click to download, cancel the dialog box which pops up. Now use the option to download the offline installer. Install that & see whether a prefs folder shows up in the normal place (containing a 19 KB gnutella.net file). I've got no idea why my 4.16.3 seemed to have no prefs folder yesterday. I reinstalled, rebooted blah blah blah but I didn't redownload the app (I originally used the offline installer). I downloaded the version (basic) again this morning & the LimeWire folder was within App Data where it should be & the problem with the gnutella.net file seems to have been fixed also. If you still have the same problem after reinstalling, go & post at this other forum...the developers might see your post there. LimeWire Forums - Powered by vBulletin The firewall icon shows because LW's detected a firewall somewhere. Could be a software firewall that you have installed that's not configured to allow LW, could be a firewall associated with your ISP (if your ISP includes a firewall in your package), could be an internal firewall within a modem/router or there could be a firewall associated with where you're connecting from (eg apartment block, school, work). Even though LW might connect & download fine when it's showing the firewall icon, you might find that other people can't download from you (ie no uploads) & that you can't direct connect to other users. Check the stickies in this section for more info & if you want to try to get rid of the firewall icon, post back with your system details. Last edited by birdy; January 31st, 2008 at 06:09 PM. |

![]() Ok, I uninstalled 4.16.3, and redownloaded the file(I had deleted the install file from my desktop). I still didnt have a preferences folder nor the gnutella file, but the brickwall is gone now(by the way, I was able to upload when I had the brickwall after installing 4.16.3). I have since uninstalled 4.16.3 the 2nd time, and installed 4.17 beta now(no preferences folder or gnutella file), and brickwall is gone as well. I will leave it running & see if any uploads happen. By the way, the only file I can find to download/install is LimeWireWin(~4mb) which I get when clicking on either the Get Basic button or the 4.17 Beta button. I tried cancelling it as you said, but was no other option to download anything. Is the file I should be getting? |

![]() guys... you might have figured out my problem, but i need your help... i am using 4.16.3 and for the last few versions, i have gotten 5 bars but also the brick wall. i never used to get the brick wall, but now i do. it still works, but its not as robust. anyway, i don't see or know where to look for the preferences folder. so what should i do to try your fix? uninstall limewire, delete what folders where, and then save the download of 4.16.3 to local disk and reinstall? i desperately want to rid myself of this stupid brick wall. i'm confused though as to how to replicate what you guys seem to have worked out. thanks, -mdw |

It's just that the gnutella.net file lives inside the prefs folder so I'm a bit confused about what you did with the file if you had no prefs folder to put it in. Are you sure that you've enabled showing of hidden files & folders (to be able to see the prefs folder)? Check the screenshot here to see the option to download the offline installer. ![]() |

C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\LimeWire Application Data's hidden by default, so you'll need to enable viewing of hidden files & folders to be able to see it (control panel > folder options > view > check the radio button to show hidden files & folders > apply > ok). Vista users look here C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire See the link below for how to show hidden files & folders & find the prefs folder in Vista. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html |

![]() XP sp2, i'm typically a power user (i'm even comptia A+ cert) but limewire has frustrated me to the point where i just give up. i do show hidden files and filename exts by default. i do have the folder where u say it should be, and it has the gnutella.net file in it. should i try uninstalling my current install, deleting this file, and reinstalling via the offline installer? or what would u suggest? i just want to rid myself of this brick wall. |

![]() What version of Java are you using? Have you tried updating Java at all? The latest update is here. Use the JRE offline installer & remove other Java installed before installing the latest. Java SE Downloads Deleting the preferences folder is often a fix for weird issues & at any rate, it won't hurt anything. Deleting the folder will reset LW's options to default, so you'll need to go back through LW's tools > options & reset things when you restart LW. Make sure LW's properly closed before deleting the prefs folder. If you've used much older versions of LW in the past, also look for a folder in the old location of C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire *If you delete the prefs folder & find that you can't connect afterwards, see the thread below for info about replacing the gnutella.net file & other connection fixes* If LW Will Not Connect You could resintall using the offline installer if you like but before that, try the latest Beta version. You can download the Beta from your Pro download page (if you use Pro) or from the usual basic download page. If you think it's a version related issue (saw your other thread), revert back to an older version of LW. Do you still have a 4.14 installer saved? If not, this is a link to a hosted 4.14.8 basic installer. LW Basic 4.14.8.exe If you install the old version & the firewall icon goes away, you could post in the Bugs & Beta Testing section of this other forum. The developers might see your post there. LimeWire Forums - Powered by vBulletin Otherwise, maybe there's a router issue. Have you tried port forwarding? The instructions for your router are here. Port Forwarding for the Dlink DIR-655 Don't forget to set up a static IP address first. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within router setup should all be the same number. |

I'll try the offline installer & see if it doesnt fix the no pref dir problem. LW was uploading fine when I checked my computer, so other then the fact I have no preferences directory that I can find, LW seems to work fine heh. |
