Default have LimeWire PRO, think i've tried most all forum hints

hi guys (or gals). i have PRO and have tried adding the 2 new ports and uninstall, reinstall process with no success. i haven't yet tried messing with the keys in my registry, 'cuz i'm not that computer savvy so i'm a little leary. free limewire useta work for me until i started using a pirated version of norton corporate, but even after removing that software i can't get PRO to initialize and start. i am now using mcafee enterprise 8.5.0i, but haven't even bothered trying to figure out how to open it's firewall for limewire yet because what's the point. me and my adopted daughter's friends would be VERY greatful if you could help me out of this dilemma.

So you have an installation & start up problem? It's not easy to read what your problem is considering you posted in the Connection Problem section.

When upgrading to Pro it's always a good idea to remove previous LW preferences folder: I am guessing you have Windows XP or earlier since you did NOT say. *sighs & yawns* so I'm guessing you are NOT using Mac or Linux.

1. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) or http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

2. Remove all versions of Java & re-install only using the OFFLINE installer. Download Java software from Sun Microsystems

3. Go to Start menu, All programs -> LW > Uninstall.

4. Run this utility: Crap Cleaner

5. Reinstall LW using your Pro installer.

6. If problems opening them try options 5 & 6 here: Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link)

7. If you have XP or VISTA, then go to your control panels & disable your firewall. You should NOT have two software firewalls running as it results in less security & other problems. See suggestions here User Cant Connect - LimeWire

It would have been helpful to have these details as the forum rules require: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link)

Default sorry about lack of details, here they are

message is: "LimeWire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking LimeWire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire."
operating system is windows XP. LimeWire version is LimeWire PRO 4.18.8. internet connection is 512k ADSL. windows firewall is not in use. hard disk available is 10.51 GB. total RAM is 27.95 GB (these 2 numbers are what is shown when i defrag drive C. i don't know enough about computers to know if i am giving the correct numbers). java version 6 update 10. garden valley telephone company in U.S.A. is my ISP. i used the free version of limewire in the past, and i don't recall exactly what may have made it stop working. my computer is running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (i don't know how to make an exception for LimeWire, though). my test worked. my modem is a Thomson speedtouch model st546 v6. i hope this info helps you help me, because i tried all of the tips in the Lord of the Rings first response, to no avail.

A. It's my guess your Speedtouch is the problem. Port forwarding would be way to go.

Steps are .. and first step is one you must do first:

1. Set up a static ip for Windows XP (click on linke)

2. Then Port Forwarding for the Thomson/Alcatel SpeedTouch 546

Their sample images are a little odd, I see they have UPnP checked. Usually it's one or the other, however, see how it goes.

B. When you say XP firewall is not in use, did you disable it via the Control Panel?
In any case you can set it up to allow LW full access: Windows Firewall - LimeWire

Alternate Windows XP firewall instructions:
1. Check the Windows system tray (usually located in the bottom-right corner of the screen, next to the time), and locate the icon associated with your security program. Right-click the icon to enter the settings.
2. Locate a section for adding exceptions for specific programs.
3. Add LimeWire as an exception (C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe by default on Windows systems)

Master Baggins: I went through the steps of setting up a static IP address for my PC and found that i already had one. the next step sticks in my craw, though. PFConfig wants over $20.00 to automatically port forward my router, but also gives step by step instructions on how to do this manually. the catch is that you need to open limewire to determine which port it uses for incoming connections. if i could open limewire, i would probably be happily sharing files with the rest of the gnutella network at this very minute.any idea which port it uses? also, i disabled windows firewall via the control panel because i have heard that it is bad to operate 2 firewall's simultaneously. i am going to do some research on this, however, as i can find no mention of a firewall in McAffee's user's manual

Do the above port forward instructions not work?

Bilbo (I feel we know each other well enough now): the first step in manually port forwarding is to open LimeWire to determine which ports it is using. if you read my forum post dated March 10th you will see that i am unable to open LimeWire. so in response to your most recent query, no, the above instructions do not work. if i knew which ports LimeWire PRO 4.18.8 uses, the instructions quite probably WOULD work.
