Default LW 5.1.2 no connection over unknown network

Hi

I cannot connect although I read the threads and I tried the steps described there to get connection.

I get Internet connection through an unsecured wireless network from the institute nextdoor. I recieve just enouth signal. So I don't know provider, router, ports etc. I get everything and pretty fast with this internet connection but i wonder if i can do p2p in principle if the institute probably disabled such actions?

does any one know what I can try out? Or how i make sure that there is not another problem responsible form the missing connection than my guess above?

thanks

1. OS version? -> Windows Vista Home SP1, admin.
2. What firewalls you have? Windows Vista Firewall
3. How much ram? 2 GB
4. Hard Disk space available? 52 GB
5. Connection type? probably broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? unknown
7. Where are you trying to connect ? from home but though a open wireless connection provided by a institute next door.
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? totally actual 5.1.2
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? unknown
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? negative (without ..:6346/ it works)
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. Guess not
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. experianced would say
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? no.
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? don't know
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall. No security programs
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). Switzerland
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? No.

That means the default port 6346 is blocked. The majority of universities nowadays do attempt to block p2p sharing because it uses a lot of bandwidth which they pay dearly for. First thing they often do is block a range of ports. So ... can try changing ports; try changing both connection & listening ports to one between 49152 - 65535. Example: port 64049. Manual port forward instructions & sample image & set it to either manual port forward or the other option, but not UPnP. Manual port forward as the lesser preferred choice.

You will also need to set up an exception for LW in your Vista firewall rules: Setting up an exception for LimeWire in your software firewall (click in link)
